Priscilla Gagné cinquième d’un tournoi en demi-teinte

Montréal, 24 août 2023 – Priscilla Gagné a vécu des hauts et des bas, jeudi, à l’occasion des Championnats du monde de parajudo disputés à Birmingham, au Royaume-Uni. Un départ canon suivi de deux défaites crève-cœur lui a finalement procuré le cinquième rang de la catégorie des moins de 57 kg (J1).

Gagné a bien amorcé ce tournoi disputé dans le cadre des IBSA World Games (Jeux des athlètes malvoyants), remportant rapidement ses deux premiers duels pour se frayer un chemin vers la demi-finale. La Canadienne, troisième au classement mondial de la catégorie, avait ensuite rendez-vous avec la championne du monde 2022, Dondu Yselyuyrt, de la Turquie.

Si les deux athlètes ont connu de bons moments pendant le duel, Gagné a tout de même dû s’avouer vaincue.

« Elle est très, très forte et je ne l’ai jamais encore battue. C’était difficile, mais j’ai tout de même pu faire des choses que je n’avais jamais réussi contre elle, alors je n’ai pas de regret pour ce combat », a partagé la vice-championne paralympique au terme de la compétition.

Les espoirs de médaille étaient toujours bien réels pour Gagné. Elle s’est dirigée vers l’une des deux finales de bronze pour y affronter une adversaire bien familière, soit l’Américaine Liana Mutia, contre qui elle s’était inclinée en finale des Championnats panaméricains 2022, avant de prendre sa revanche contre elle lors de sa troisième place au Grand Prix d’Alexandrie, en mars 2023.

Une fois de plus, les deux opposantes ont offert un combat des plus relevés. Les hostilités se sont poursuivies jusqu’en prolongation et la tendance des derniers affrontements entre ces rivales a persisté, au grand désarroi de Gagné.

« Celle-là était un peu plus difficile à avaler, a avoué la Canadienne. J’avais l’avance aux shidos (pénalités) en prolongation, mais elle a concrétisé une attaque pour l’emporter. Ça fait longtemps qu’on se connait et il faut toujours avoir une stratégie différente contre elle. C’est dommage, mais je ne m’en fais pas trop avec ça. Il me reste un an jusqu’aux Jeux de Paris et je veux profiter de chaque moment. »

Aussi en action chez les -57 kg J1, la Britanno-Colombienne Christina Mowatt a été éliminée d’entrée de jeu en raison d’un revers subi face à l’Espagnole Maria Manzanero.

Seul Canadien en lice chez les hommes, Justin Karn a de son côté pris part au tournoi chez les moins de 60 kg (J2) mercredi. Défait au premier tour contre le Kazakh Anuar Sariyev, éventuel médaillé de bronze, l’Ontarien a bien rebondi au repêchage en défaisant l’Australien Jacob Fitzpatrick.

Son parcours a toutefois pris fin au tour suivant, quand il a baissé pavillon contre l’Espagnol Lorenzo Gavilan, septième au classement final de la catégorie dominée par l’Ouzbek Kemran Nurillaev.

Priscilla Gagné Fifth in Bittersweet Tournament

Montréal, August 24, 2023 – Priscilla Gagné had her share of ups and downs on Thursday at the Parajudo World Championships in Birmingham, UK. A strong start followed by two heartbreaking losses earned her a fifth-place finish in the under-57 kg J1 category.

Gagné got off to a good start at the IBSA World Games, quickly dispatching of her first two opponents to advance to the semi-finals. The Canadian, who holds third place in the international rankings in her category, then faced 2022 world champion Dondu Yselyuyrt of Turkey.

Although both athletes experienced some high points during the bout, Gagné eventually had to admit defeat.

“She’s very, very strong, and I have yet to beat her. It was hard, but still, I was able to do certain things I’d never managed to do against her before, so I have no regrets about the fight,” said Paralympic silver medallist Gagné, following the competition.

Despite the loss, Gagné’s medal hopes were still very much alive. She advanced to one of the two bronze medal finals, where she was pitted against a familiar rival: Liana Mutia of the USA, to whom she had lost the 2022 Pan-American Championships final, before exacting revenge with a third-place finish at the Alexandria Grand Prix in March 2023.

Once again, the battle was intense. The match went into overtime, and much to Gagné’s dismay, it ended in the same manner as have several recent bouts between the two rivals.

“That one was a bit harder to take,” admitted the Canadian. “I was ahead in shidos [penalties] in overtime, but she completed an attack to win. We’ve known each other for a long time, and you always have to use different strategies against her. It’s too bad, but I won’t let it get to me too much. The Paris Games are only a year away, and I want to enjoy every moment.”

Also in the under-57 kg J1 category, British Columbia’s Christina Mowatt was eliminated after her first-round loss to Maria Manzanero of Spain.

The only Canadian male in action was Justin Karn, who competed in the under-60 kg J2 event on Wednesday. After a first-round loss to Anuar Sariyev of Kazakhstan, who later won a bronze medal, the Ontarian bounced back in the repechage to defeat Jacob Fitzpatrick of Australia.

However, his run came to an end in the next round, where he bowed out to Spain’s Lorenzo Gavilan, who holds seventh place in the rankings for the category, which is dominated by Kemran Nurillaev of Uzbekistan.
