Montréal, 18 février 2024 – L’Ontarienne Priscilla Gagné a été médaillée de bronze dans la catégorie J1, -57 kg, au Grand Prix de parajudo d’Heidelberg, en Allemagne, dimanche. La vétérane de l’équipe canadienne a conclu sa journée avec une fiche de 4-1.
La seule défaite de Gagné est survenue aux mains d’Uljon Amrieva, de l’Ouzbékistan, une nouvelle venue sur la scène internationale qui a remporté le tournoi. La Chinoise et championne du monde en titre Shi Yijie a fini au deuxième rang, tandis que l’Argentine Paula Karina a été l’autre médaillée de bronze.
Médaillée d’argent au Grand Prix de Tokyo, en décembre dernier, Gagné avait vaincu l’Espagnole Maria Manzanero Ruiz avant de se buter à la future médaillée d’or. L’athlète de 37 ans a poursuivi sa route au repêchage, défaisant coup sur coup la Finlandaise Tessa Koponen et la Kazakhe Alfiya Tlekkabyl. Dans son dernier affrontement du jour, la Canadienne a eu raison de la Brésilienne Larissa Silva.
« C’est excitant de savoir que de nouveaux talents émergent dans le circuit alors que nous sommes en préparation des Jeux paralympiques de Paris », a commenté l’Ontarienne qui a signé ses quatre victoires par ippon.
Dans ce même tableau, la Britanno-Colombienne Christina Mowatt a remis une fiche de 0-2. Elle a perdu son premier duel contre la Brésilienne Silva et son deuxième contre l’Argentine Karina.
À sa première présence à l’international, le Québécois Eitel Houedakor (J1 -90 kg) n’a pas obtenu de classement. Il a perdu son premier affrontement contre le Français et champion du monde 2022, Cyril Jonard. Une fois au repêchage, il a plié l’échine face à une autre grosse pointure, le Moldave et champion européen d’il y a deux ans, Oleg Cretul.
Coralie Godbout espérait mieux qu’une cinquième place
Pendant ce temps, à l’Open africain d’Alger, Coralie Godbout s’est classée cinquième dans le tableau des moins de 78 kg. Dans son affrontement pour une médaille de bronze, la Québécoise a été vaincue par la Tunisienne Arij Akkab.
Une semaine plus tôt, à l’Open africain de Tunis, les deux mêmes athlètes s’étaient affrontées en grande finale et c’est la Canadienne qui s’était imposée.
« Je n’ai pas eu une très bonne journée. J’ai eu des problèmes logistiques (pour arriver ici) et je pense qu’inconsciemment, cela a joué un peu dans mon mental. Et même physiquement, je me sentais un peu moins forte que la semaine dernière, a reconnu la Québécoise. Honnêtement, je m’attendais à faire un podium aujourd’hui et c’est pour ça que je suis déçue de cette compétition. J’ai laissé les émotions me toucher un peu plus et c’est ça qui a fait une différence. »
Godbout avait entamé sa journée avec un match marathon de plus de 6 minutes qu’elle a perdu aux mains de la Serbe Milica Cvijic.
« Le combat a été décevant du côté de l’arbitrage et il y a des pénalités qui auraient pu être décernées, ce qui aurait fait en sorte que j’aurais pu gagner. Il y a aussi des trucs que j’aurais pu améliorer, c’est sûr », a commenté Godbout, ajoutant qu’elle a eu de la difficulté à oublier cette défaite pour la suite de son parcours.
Une fois en ronde du repêchage, la Québécoise a eu raison d’Ange Ciella Niragira, du Burundi, par ippon avant de retrouver Akkab.
« Je devrai travailler du côté mental. Je pense que je me mets beaucoup de pression avec les points de la qualification olympique. […] Je dois apprendre à contrôler tout ça et ça va aller mieux la prochaine fois. Il faut juste que je ne me laisse pas atteindre par mes mauvaises journées », a conclu celle qui rentrera à la maison afin de poursuivre l’entraînement en vue des Championnats panaméricains qui auront lieu à Rio de Janeiro, à la fin avril.
À la recherche de victoires à Bakou
La journée a aussi été difficile pour les trois Canadiens qui combattaient au Grand Chelem de Bakou, en Azerbaïdjan
Dans le tableau des moins 100 kg, l’Ontarien Kyle Reyes a signé une victoire par ippon en prolongation contre l’Ouzbek Ernazar Bilalov pour ensuite s’incliner par waza-ari face à l’athlète russe Niiaz Bilalov, futur médaillé de bronze.
Dans cette même catégorie, Shady ElNahas a vu sa journée s’arrêter à son premier combat contre le Géorgien Onise Saneblidze, qui a eu raison de lui par waza-ari.
Quant à Louis Krieber-Gagnon (-90 kg), il a subi une défaite contre le Brésilien Marcelo Gomes à son combat initial.
« C’est une journée un petit peu décevante aujourd’hui (dimanche). Les duels ont été serrés, mais ils n’ont pas été capables de prendre des décisions clés pour les remporter. Les combats étaient à leur portée, mais ce sont quelques petites erreurs qui leur ont coûté le combat dans les derniers instants. C’est toujours crève-cœur de perdre des combats serrés », a reconnu l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Valois-Fortier.
L’équipe canadienne qui est sur la route depuis déjà trois semaines rentrera tout de même au pays avec trois médailles au compteur de ce week-end de compétition : l’or de Christa Deguchi (-57 kg), l’argent de Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg) et le bronze d’Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg).
Elle reprendra la route dans cinq semaines afin de participer à d’autres tournois en Géorgie et en Turquie. Ces tournois compteront dans le processus de qualification olympique qui prendra fin le 22 juin.

Priscilla Gagné Takes Bronze in Challenging Tournament
Montréal, February 18, 2024 – Ontario’s Priscilla Gagné won bronze in the J1 under-57 kg category at the Para Judo Grand Prix in Heidelberg, Germany, on Sunday. The Canadian veteran finished her day with a 4-1 record.
Her only loss came at the hands of Uzbekistan’s Uljon Amrieva, a new arrival on the international scene and the winner of today’s tournament. Reigning world champion Shi Yijie of China finished second, and Paula Karina of Argentina won the other bronze medal.
After defeating Maria Manzanero of Spain, Gagné, who won silver at the Tokyo Grand Prix last December, lost to Amrieva. The 37-year-old then went on to beat Tessa Koponen of Finland and Alfiya Tlekkabyl of Kazakhstan in back-to-back bouts in the repechage. In her final match of the day, the Canadian edged out Larissa Silva of Brazil.
“It’s exciting to see that new talent is emerging as we prepare for the Paris Paralympic Games,” said Gagné, whose four wins today were all by ippon.
In the same category, British Columbia’s Christina Mowatt finished with a record of 0-2. She lost her first bout to Silva of Brazil and her second to Karina of Argentina.
Quebec’s Eitel Houedakor (J1 -90 kg), who was competing in the first international tournament of his career, did not rank. After losing his first match to 2022 world champion Cyril Jonard of France, he moved on to the repechage, where he bowed out to another strong contender, Oleg Cretul of Moldova, who was European champion two years ago.
Coralie Godbout expected better than fifth
Meanwhile, at the Algiers African Open, Coralie Godbout finished fifth in the under-78 kg weight division. In her battle for bronze, the Québécoise was defeated by Arij Akkab of Tunisia.
Last week, at the Tunis African Open, the same two athletes met in the big final; that time, the Canadian came out on top.
“I didn’t have a very good day today. I ran into some logistical issues [getting here], and I think that subconsciously, it affected me mentally. Even physically, I wasn’t feeling as strong as I was last week,” said Godbout. “Honestly, I expected to finish on the podium today, and I’m disappointed about this competition. I let my emotions get the better of me, and that’s what made the difference.”
Godbout began her day with a marathon bout against Milica Cvijic of Serbia. She lost after more than six minutes of competition.
“The refereeing in that match was disappointing. There were some penalties that weren’t called, which would have allowed me to win. But there were also some things I could have done better, of course,” explained Godbout, adding that she had difficulty shaking off the loss before moving on to her next bouts.
In the repechage, she bested Ange Ciella Niragira of Burundi by ippon before facing off against Akkab.
“I need to work on the mental side of things. I think the issue of Olympic qualification points is causing me to put a lot of pressure on myself. [. . .] I have to learn to control that, and I’ll do better next time. I can’t let the bad days get to me,” said Godbout, who will now return home to start preparing for the Pan-American Championships, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro in late April.
Victory elusive in Baku
The three Canadians competing in Baku, Azerbaijan, also had a tough day today.
In the under-100 kg weight division, Ontario’s Kyle Reyes defeated Ernazar Bilalov of Uzbekistan by ippon in overtime before bowing by out by waza-ari to Niiaz Bilalov of Russia, who later won a bronze medal.
In the same category, Shady ElNahas was halted in his first and only match of the day by Onise Saneblidze of Georgia, who won by waza-ari.
As for Louis Krieber-Gagnon (-90 kg), he lost his first and only match of the day to Marcelo Gomes of Brazil.
“It’s been a bit of a disappointing day. The fights were close, but [the judokas] didn’t make the key decisions they needed to make to win them. They were within their grasp, but they made a few small errors in the final moments that cost them the bouts. Losing a close fight is always painful,” said Canadian coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.
The Canadian team that has been on the road for the past three weeks will nevertheless return home with three medals from this weekend’s tournaments: gold for Christa Deguchi (-57 kg), silver for Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), and bronze for Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg).
The team will be back on the road in five weeks’ time to attend tournaments in Georgia and Turkey. The competitions will count toward the Olympic qualification process, which comes to an end on June 22.
