Priscilla Gagné revient en force et obtient l’argent au Japon !

Montréal, 5 décembre 2023 – La Canadienne Priscilla Gagné s’est blessée à une cheville il y a à peine deux semaines et, malgré cela, elle a réussi à décrocher la médaille d’argent au Grand Prix de parajudo disputé à Tokyo, au Japon.

Gagné était opposée à l’Américaine Liana Mutia en grande finale des moins de 57 kg (J1).

Les affrontements sont toujours des plus relevés entre ces deux adversaires qui s’échangent constamment les victoires. L’Ontarienne l’avait vaincue au Grand Prix d’Alexandrie en mars dernier, puis Mutia avait eu le dessus en demi-finale des Championnats du monde, au mois d’août.

Mardi, Priscilla Gagné a d’abord inscrit un waza-ari au début du combat, puis les officiels sont revenus sur leur décision quelques secondes plus tard. La représentante des États-Unis est ensuite passée à l’offensive. Elle a réussi un ippon avec un peu plus d’une minute à faire pour l’emporter.

« Il demeure que Priscilla a été en contrôle et a très bien suivi le plan de match. C’était la première fois que Mutia réussissait une attaque du côté gauche face à une adversaire de qualité. Elle s’est clairement améliorée et elle prend maintenant le premier rang du classement mondial », a souligné l’entraîneur national Andrzej Sadej.

Profitant d’un laissez-passer au premier tour, Priscilla Gagné a entamé son tournoi en l’emportant par ippon face à Ina Cernei, de la Moldavie. En demi-finale, la médaillée d’argent aux Jeux paralympiques de Tokyo a défait l’Argentine et future médaillée de bronze Paula Gomez, encore une fois grâce à un ippon.

« Sachant qu’elle n’a pas eu la meilleure préparation pour ce tournoi, j’ai confiance que Priscilla sera en mesure de vaincre l’Américaine lors des prochains Jeux, où ça compte le plus », a conclu Andrzej Sadej.

Priscilla Gagné comes back strong to win silver in Japan!

Montreal, December 5^th, 2023 – Despite injuring her ankle just two weeks ago, Canada’s Priscilla Gagné still took home silver at the Para Judo Grand Prix in Tokyo, Japan.

Gagné faced off against American Liana Mutia in the grand final of the under 57 kg class (J1).

The showdowns between these two rivals are always fierce, as they constantly trade victories. The Ontarian defeated her opponent at the Alexandria Grand Prix last March, before Mutia got the better of her in the semi-finals of the World Championships in August.

On Tuesday, Priscilla Gagné first scored a waza-ari at the start of the bout, but the officials reversed their decision a few seconds later. The American then went on the offensive and scored an ippon with just over a minute remaining to win.

“The fact is Priscilla was in control and followed the game plan very well. This was Mutia’s first successful attack from the left side against a quality opponent. She has clearly improved and is now ranked number one in the world”, commented Canada’s coach Andrzej Sadej.

Taking advantage of a first-round bye, Priscilla Gagné began her tournament with an ippon victory over Moldova’s Ina Cernei. In the semi-finals, the Tokyo Paralympic silver medallist defeated Argentina’s future bronze medallist Paula Gomez, once again by ippon.

“Knowing that she hasn’t had the best preparation for this tournament, I’m confident that Priscilla will be able to beat the American at the next Games, where it counts most”, concluded Andrzej Sadej.
