Judo Canada - Championnats du monde de parajudo
Judo Canada
Montréal, September 25, 2026 (Judo Canada) – It was a marathon day with a disappointing end for Priscilla Gagné at the World Para-Judo Championships in Tbilisi (Day 1). The Ontarian judoka had her heart set on a podium in the Under-52-kg division, but a bronze medal match against a tough opponent would relegate her to fifth place.
In the aforementioned match, Gagné faced Spain’s Maria Manzanero Ruiz, a judoka who’s currently ranked fifth in the world in their weight class. The early moments of the bout showed the kind of heated battle it would become, with quality attacks from both sides, before the European competitor took control of the mat.
The Spanish athlete launched a series of throwing attempts that left Gagné with little room to maneuver. Manzanero Ruiz ultimately scored a Yuko in the final minute, securing the latter’s spot on the third step of the podium.
“The Spanish athlete scored on a move that could have gone either way,” explained Canadian coach Franck Moussima after the heartbreaking bout. “Her opponent simply reacted well to the attacks and managed to gain several seconds on the ground afterward. It was a very close match though, and it’s evident that Priscilla tried everything to make a comeback, but to no avail. It just didn’t go her way today.”
This setback brought an end to what must have felt like a marathon competition for the Ontarian, who was on to the tatami a whopping six times in the effort to achieve her goal. Gagné’s long day began with two wins at the start of the tournament, followed by a loss to Suvd-Erdene Togtokhbayar (Mongolia).
The 40-year-old veteran judoka continued on to the repechage, where she won two bouts to secure a spot in one of two bronze medal matches.
“It was an intense competition and a very long day. There were a lot of competitors and it was tough overall, but Priscilla really demonstrated a great deal of determination and stamina. She put her experience to good use and she can rest easy knowing she did everything she needed to do. Overall, she can be proud of what she accomplished, and I know she also had a lot of fun,” Coach Moussima commented.
World Champion honours in the weight class went to Alfiya Tlekkabyl (Kazakhstan), thanks to a victory in the grand finale over Rosicleide de Andrade (Brazil). China’s Zhao Wei was the other bronze medalist of the day.
A day of triumphs and trouble for Houedakor
The only other Canadian competing at these World Championships was Eitel Houedakor, who faced off against Kazakhstan’s Bauyrzhan Artsanbekov in the first round of the Under-81-kg division (Day 1). The Montréaler had a score to settle, having lost three of his bouts against this same opponent in previous competitions. This time, the Canuck at last defeated Artsanbekov, which gave him the chance to advance to the next round.
“For us, that was his toughest match of the day, because he’d never managed to beat that opponent before. Eitel fought a great match from start to finish, and it was a fabulous victory for him—an important of his career,” Moussima noted of his protégé.
Houedakor tried to build on his momentum in his next bout, but was unable to get the better of Argentine’s Alejandro Kunkel, another judoka who’s caused some trouble on the tatami for the Québecer.
“It’s a shame, because he (Houedakor) really dominated early on in the fight, but then got taken down. This is the third time he’s lost to the Argentine, but overall, we’re seeing solid improvements. It’s a good experience for Eitel, and he’ll definitely come out of it stronger,” concluded the Canadian coach.
Saba Bagdavadze (Georgia) won the final against Brazilian Danilo David Geronimo Silva. Frenchman Cyril Jonard and Uzbek Shohrukh Mamedov shared third place on the podium.
