Montréal, 8 novembre 2022 – La Québécoise Priscilla Gagné a bataillé fort mardi aux Championnats du monde IBSA de parajudo disputés à Bakou, en Azerbaïdjan. Irréprochable à ses trois premiers combats, Gagné est devenue vice-championne du monde après s’être inclinée en grande finale des moins de 57 kg.

Pour la première fois aux Championnats du monde de parajudo, les athlètes non-voyants et ceux avec une déficience visuelle étaient séparés en deux catégories distinctes afin d’améliorer la parité au sein des groupes.

Dans la catégorie J1, Gagné a amorcé sa journée de belle façon au premier tour en défaisant rapidement la Brésilienne Larissa Silva. L’athlète de 36 ans a poursuivi sur sa lancée en quart de finale où elle a réussi à battre l’Américaine Liana Mutia dans un duel âprement disputé.

En demi-finale, la vice-championne des Jeux paralympiques de Tokyo avait rendez-vous avec l’Ukrainienne Anzhela Havrysiuk. Bien en contrôle durant le combat, Gagné a réussi un waza-ari afin d’obtenir son billet pour la finale.

« Priscilla a été superbe dans ses affrontements contre l’Américaine et contre l’Ukrainienne, ces deux-là sont assurément deux des meilleures athlètes de la catégorie. C’était excellent comme début de journée », a commenté l’entraîneur Andrzej Sadej.

La Turque Dondu Yesilyurt était la dernière opposante de Priscilla Gagné mardi. Malgré sa bonne technique et ses réactions rapides face aux attaques de son adversaire, la Canadienne a dû s’avouer vaincue et se contenter de la médaille d’argent.

« La Turque est une ancienne haltérophile, ce qui explique pourquoi elle était aussi forte physiquement. Priscilla a travaillé fort, mais son adversaire a tout simplement été plus dominante. Ce n’était pas un duel facile et je crois que Priscilla peut être fière d’elle », a ajouté Sadej.

« Elle était un peu déçue au départ parce qu’elle visait la médaille d’or, je pense toutefois qu’elle était heureuse de monter sur le podium. C’était une compétition spéciale et elle a prouvé qu’elle fait partie de l’élite de son sport. »

Après une courte pause médicale au milieu de l’affrontement, Yesilyurt est revenue en force pour marquer un waza-ari sur Gagné. Cette manœuvre aura finalement été suffisante pour l’emporter, alors que la championne a appliqué une stratégie défensive sans faille jusqu’à la fin du combat.

Dans la même catégorie que Gagné, Christina Mowatt a conclu la journée au cinquième échelon après une défaite dans un combat pour une médaille de bronze.

La Britanno-Colombienne a d’abord défait Paula Gomez Martinez de l’Argentine en début de journée avant de se défaire de l’Allemande Vanessa Wagner en trois petites secondes, lors des quarts de finale.

« Je suis très fière de la performance de Christina, particulièrement dans les deux premiers duels. Elle a été fantastique pour l’emporter rapidement. Nous avions un plan de match clair qu’elle a suivi à la lettre. Elle a toujours trouvé la solution », a indiqué Sadej.

L’éventuelle médaillée d’or Dondu Yesilyurt s’est toutefois retrouvée dans le chemin de Mowatt en demi-finale. La Turque l’a emporté, reléguant du même coup Mowatt à un combat pour la médaille de bronze.

Lors de cet ultime combat, Liana Mutia a eu raison de Mowatt, qui termine la compétition avec une fiche de deux victoires et deux défaites.

« Christina participait à ses premiers Championnats du monde et c’est très satisfaisant pour nous tous qu’elle termine la compétition au cinquième rang. C’est très encourageant et, encore une fois, je suis vraiment fier de son travail », a conclu Sadej.

Les Championnats du monde IBSA de parajudo de Bakou se poursuivront mercredi et la Canadienne Michelle Jorgenson sera en action.

Priscilla Gagné: World Champion Runner-Up!

Montréal, November 8, 2022 – Quebec’s Priscilla Gagné put in a good fight at the IBSA Judo World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Tuesday. Gagné, who was unassailable throughout her first three bouts, became the world champion runner-up when she was defeated in the under-57 kg big final.

For the first time ever at the Para Judo World Championships, blind and visually impaired athletes competed in two separate categories to improve parity within the groups.

In the J1 category, Gagné began her day with a quick first-round victory over Larissa Silva of Brazil. The 36-year-old Canadian then maintained her momentum into the quarter-final, where she defeated Liana Mutia of the USA in a hard-fought battle.

In the semi-final, the Tokyo Olympics silver medallist was pitted against Anzhela Havrysiuk of Ukraine. Gagné, who maintained control throughout the bout, defeated her opponent by waza-ari to advance to the big final.

“Priscilla was fantastic in her fights against her American and Ukrainian opponents, and they’re easily two of the best athletes in that category. It was an excellent start to the day,” noted coach Andrzej Sadej.

Dondu Yesilyurt of Turkey was Gagné’s final challenger on Tuesday. Despite her excellent technique and her quick reactions to Yesilyurt’s attacks, the Canadian had to admit defeat and settle for the silver medal.

“Yesilyurt is a former weightlifter, which explains why she’s so physically powerful. Priscilla tried hard, but her opponent was simply stronger. It wasn’t an easy fight, and Priscilla has much to be proud of,” added Sadej.

“She was disappointed at first because she was aiming for gold, but I think she was happy to be on the podium, nonetheless. It was a special competition and she proved that she belongs among her sport’s elite.” 

Following a short medical break in the middle of the match, Yesilyurt came back in full force to score a waza-ari on Gagné. Because the manoeuvre was enough to decide the match, Yesilyurt applied a flawless defensive strategy for the remainder of the fight.

In the same category as Gagné, Christina Mowatt finished the day in fifth place after bowing out in the bronze medal final.

The British Columbian began her day with a victory over Paula Gomez Martinez of Argentina before ousting Vanessa Wagner of Germany in only three seconds in the quarter-final.

“I’m proud of Christina’s performance, especially in her first two fights. That quick win of hers was fantastic. We had a game plan and she followed it to the letter. She always found a solution,” noted Sadej.

Mowatt and Yesilyurt met in the semi-finals. The future world champion won the match, relegating Mowatt to one of the bronze medal finals.

In that bout, Liana Mutia defeated Mowatt, who finished the tournament with a record of two wins and two losses.

“These were Christina’s first World Championships, and her fifth place finish is very satisfactory. It’s very encouraging for all of us, and again, I’m really proud of what she accomplished,” concluded Sadej.

The IBSA Judo World Championships will continue in Baku on Wednesday. Canada’s Michelle Jorgenson will be in action.
