Judo Canada – European Cup

Renaud-Roy in Gold and Langlois in Bronze

Nouvelle

Montreal, June 10, 2018 – The Canadian athletes will leave the European Cup in Belgrade, in Serbia, with two medals around their necks. Alix Renaud-Roy (-70 kg) won the gold medal on Sunday, and Bradley Langlois (-73 kg) won the bronze on Saturday.

In the final for the top spot on the podium, Renaud-Roy won by ippon against Croatian Andela Violic. The judoka from La Pocatière had a perfect day leading to this. She had already won by ippon against Hungarian Renata Lorinc in the semi-final, and Ivana Jandric and Katarina Denic, both from Serbia, in the preliminary rounds.

“I’m very happy, especially after last week. It’s a great way to end this European tour. I felt good, and I tried to be patient during my bouts. I wanted to fight, and I think it made a difference.”

Mina Coulombe (-78 kg) placed fifth in her category. She lost by ippon against Slovene Urska Torkar in the bout for the bronze medal.

“I’m disappointed. I was managing the fight and the moment when she immobilized me well, but I think we should have had a break, because we had been off-limits for a long time. I came here to win international fights; I had little to no competitions in Europe since July 2017.”

Earlier, in repechage, the athlete from Baie-Comeau defeated Cameroonian Audrey Dilane Njepang Njapa by waza-ari, and Serbian Dijana Stankovic by ippon. She also won by ippon in the preliminary round against Czech Alice Matejckova, who went on to win the bronze medal.
