Judo Canada – European Open
Montreal, June 5, 2016 – The second day of the European Judo Open in Madrid, Spain, was no easier for Canadian judokas than the first. On Sunday, Alix Renaud-Roy finished the Under 70 kg competition in seventh place, while Étienne Briand didn’t rank in the Under 81 kg class.
After starting out the day with a bye from the opening round, Alix Renaud-Roy was up against Italy’s Carola Paissoni, who came out on top with one penalty against two of Renaud-Roy’s.
In repechage, the La Pocatière athlete lost again, this time by waza-ari to Spanish Sara Rodriguez.
“Alix had some tough matches but was not able to come out on top,” said national coach Sasha Mehmedovic. “She is still trying to find her groove and confidence since her shoulder surgery.”
Meanwhile, Étienne Briand started the competition on the right foot, with a victory over Argentinian Tomas Morales Martinatto. The Sept-Îles athlete won by getting his opponent to take three penalties, against only two of his own.
In his second bout, Briand was served an ippon at the hands of Portugal’s Anri Egutidze.
“Another difficult day for the Canadian team,” said Mehmedovic. “Étienne was the only athlete to move past the first round. This is a new category for him, and only his second tournament in the Under 81 kg division.”
