Montréal, 16 avril 2022 – Il la voulait depuis longtemps et il l’a finalement autour du cou. Shady ElNahas (-100 kg) a remporté la médaille d’or aux Championnats panaméricains de judo à Lima, au Pérou. ElNahas a été parfait à ses trois combats de la journée, il a terminé le travail en l’emportant contre le Brésilien Rafael Buzacarini en grande finale.
« Il voulait vraiment aller chercher l’or aujourd’hui (samedi) ! Shady a connu une très bonne journée. C’est une performance dominante du début à la fin, je crois qu’il n’a jamais été en danger au cours de la journée. Il a toujours été en contrôle », a mentionné l’entraîneur Antoine Valois-Fortier.
« En finale, ç’a très bien été. Il a bien positionné ses mains durant le combat et il a respecté le plan de match qu’on s’était donné au tout début. Il n’a fait aucune erreur et il a su marquer au bon moment. »
ElNahas n’a pas eu la route la plus facile pour se rendre en finale, il a d’abord dû affronter le Péruvien Daryl Yamamoto Servan à son premier combat, avant de se frotter à l’Australien Kayhan Ozcicek-Takagi en demi-finale. Yamamoto Servan et Ozcicek-Takagi ont tous les deux conclu la journée avec des médailles de bronze.
« Il les a tous battus assez aisément par contre. Shady démontre vraiment qu’il est tout à fait intouchable sur le continent. Il avait vraiment une longueur d’avance sur tout le monde », a ajouté l’entraîneur.
Avec sa fiche de deux victoires et deux défaites, Ian Ryder a terminé la journée au cinquième rang chez les moins de 100 kg. Il a été défait par Buzacarini en demi-finale, avant de s’incliner contre Yamamoto Servan lors d’une des finales pour le bronze.
Ryder avait vaincu le Colombien Alejandro Escobar et l’Américain LA Smith III au début de la journée.
Deux médailles de bronze supplémentaires
Dans la catégorie des moins de 81 kg, Étienne Briand et François Gauthier-Drapeau ont tous les deux fini la journée avec une médaille de bronze.
Après s’être incliné en finale de son groupe, Briand s’est relevé au repêchage où il a vaincu coup sur coup l’Argentin Tomas Morales et le Mexicain Samuel Ayala pour remporter le bronze. Briand avait récemment mis la main sur deux médailles d’argent lors d’Opens européens.
« Étienne est extrêmement constant, je l’ai trouvé explosif physiquement et il a été très fort dans ses projections. Il a été un peu malchanceux dans sa défaite, mais il peut être fier de lui », a remarqué Valois-Fortier.
Gauthier-Drapeau a connu un parcours similaire à son compatriote alors qu’il s’est avoué vaincu en finale de son groupe contre Ayala. Il a ensuite défait l’Américain Nicolas Yonezuka et le Dominicain Medickson Del Orbe Cortorreal.
« François a démontré beaucoup de caractère après sa défaite. Il s’est bien repris par la suite avec une belle concentration pour se tourner vers l’avant sans regarder derrière. Il a bien terminé la journée. »
Le Brésilien Guilherme Schmidt a remporté la médaille d’or dans la catégorie.
Keagan Young (-90 kg) a, de son côté, passé bien près de mettre la main sur une médaille de bronze. L’Ontarien a été défait en finale pour la troisième place par le Dominicain Robert Florentino. Il avait auparavant vaincu l’Argentin Ivo Dargoltz pour atteindre la finale de bronze.
Dans la même catégorie, Louis Krieber-Gagnon s’est incliné dès son premier combat de la journée contre Dargoltz.
Chez les plus de 100 kg, Marc Deschênes a lui aussi terminé au cinquième rang après sa défaite contre le Chilien Francisco Solis dans le duel pour la troisième place.
Deschênes avait commencé la journée du bon pied en battant le Mexicain Sergio Del Sol avant d’être battu par le Cubain Andy Granda, éventuel médaillé d’or.
« Keagan en était à une première expérience aux Championnats panaméricains, il a démontré beaucoup de bonnes choses, mais il a encore besoin de prendre de l’expérience. Du côté de Marc Deschênes, il traînait une blessure au genou depuis la Turquie. Je pense que ça le tracassait un peu et ç’a dû jouer un peu dans la balance », a conclu Valois-Fortier.
Chez les femmes, Alicia Fiandor (-70 kg) et Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) ont toutes les deux perdu leur premier combat de la journée. Ayant une chance de se reprendre au repêchage, Godbout s’est finalement s’avouer vaincue face à la Cubaine Gorguet Maidelines.

Shady El-Nahas Unbeatable at Pan-American Championships
Montréal, April 16, 2022 – He has been coveting it for a long time, and now, he is finally wearing it. Shady El Nahas (-100 kg) won the gold medal at the Judo Pan-American Championships on Saturday in Lima, Peru. El Nahas performed flawlessly in his three fights of the day, wrapping up with a victory over Brazil’s Rafael Buzacarini in the gold medal final.
“He really wanted the gold! Shady had a great day today. He dominated from start to finish. I don’t think he was ever in any danger. He remained in control the entire time,” said coach Antoine Valois-Fortier. “The final went well. He maintained good hand positioning during the fight and followed our original game plan. He didn’t make any mistakes and he waited for the right moment to score.”
The road to the big final was not an easy one for El Nahas. He faced Peru’s Daryl Yamamoto Servan in his first match before taking on Australia’s Kayhan Ozcicek-Takagi in the semi-final. Yamamoto Servan and Ozcicek-Takagi both ended the day with bronze medals.
“He beat them pretty easily, though. Shady is proving to be pretty much untouchable on the continent. He really had a leg up on everyone,” added the coach.
With a record of two wins and two losses, Ian Ryder finished the day fifth in the same weight division. He bowed out to Yamamoto Servan in the bronze medal final after having lost to Buzacarini in the semis.
Earlier in the day, Ryder had defeated Alejandro Escobar of Colombia and LA Smith III of the USA.
Two more bronze medals
In the under-81 kg weight category, Étienne Briand and François Gauthier-Drapeau both clinched bronze medals.
After losing his pool final, Briand beat Tomas Morales of Argentina and Samuel Ayala of Mexico back-to-back in the repechage to claim the bronze medal. Briand recently won two silver medals at the European Open.
“Étienne is extremely consistent. He was very explosive and he made strong throws. His loss was a bit of bad luck, but he should be proud of himself,” noted Valois-Fortier.
Gauthier-Drapeau fared in much the same way as his compatriot, losing his pool final to Ayala. He then defeated Nicolas Yonezuka of the USA and Medickson Del Orbe Cortorreal of the Dominican Republic.
“François showed real depth of character after his loss. He recovered well and kept his focus, without looking back. He ended his day well.”
Brazil’s Guilherme Schmidt won the gold medal for the weight division.
Keagan Young (-90 kg) came close to winning a bronze medal today; however, he was defeated by Robert Florentino of the Dominican Republic in the fight for third place. Young, of Ontario, had earlier edged out Ivo Dargoltz of Argentina to advance to the bronze medal final.
In the same weight class, Louis Krieber-Gagnon lost his first match of the day to Dargoltz.
In the over-100 kg category, Marc Deschênes also finished fifth after losing to Chile’s Francisco Solis in the bronze medal match.
Deschênes had started the day off on the right foot, beating Sergio Del Sol of Mexico before bowing out to Cuba’s Andy Granda in the next round. Granda later won the gold medal.
“These were Keagan’s first Pan-American Championships. We saw a lot of promise, but he still needs to gain some experience. As for Marc Deschênes, he’s been dealing with a knee injury since we left Turkey. I think it was bothering him a bit, which affected his performance,” concluded Valois-Fortier.
On the women’s side, Alicia Fiandor (-70 kg) and Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) both lost their first bouts of the day. Godbout had a chance to bounce back in the repechage, but she was defeated by Cuba’s Gorguet Maidelines.
