Montréal, 20 août 2026 – Le Canadien Roman Semyrozum est monté sur la deuxième marche du podium chez les moins de 60 kg, jeudi, aux Championnats du monde cadets disputés à Guayaquil, en Équateur.
Le judoka de Montréal a conclu la journée avec une fiche de trois victoires et une défaite. Il s’est mesuré à Rassulkhan Gabit, du Kazakhstan, en finale pour la médaille d’or. Le combat a été chaudement disputé et s’est soldé en prolongation, où Gabit a eu le dernier mot.
« Ç’a été une finale assez serrée, les deux athlètes ont eu de belles chances, mais malheureusement, Roman n’a pas réussi à concrétiser. Son adversaire a maintenu un rythme élevé en prolongation pour forcer la troisième pénalité de Roman », a souligné l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Bouchard.
Un peu plus tôt, Semyrozum a vaincu le Brésilien Rafael Falcao à son premier face-à-face. Il a ensuite eu le dessus sur le Kazakh Akhmet Baubek et sur Enkhtur Jamiyan, de la Mongolie, deux adversaires qui ont mérité une médaille de bronze en fin de journée.
« C’est une superbe journée pour Roman, il a fait preuve d’énormément de persévérance. Il tirait de l’arrière dans ses deux premiers combats et, dans les deux cas, il a continué à mettre de la pression et il a augmenté le rythme pour aller chercher les victoires. La demi-finale a aussi été un dur combat qu’il a remporté au sol. »
Dans la même catégorie de poids, Amir Temirbaev a été éliminé par Abubakr Sattorov, de l’Ouzbékistan, à son premier combat de la journée.
Giorgi Kurashvili a perdu contre Adilzhan Nurbeken, du Kazakhstan, futur médaillé d’argent chez les moins de 50 kg, alors que Grayson Tamura a été vaincu par le Français Jules Back, du côté des moins de 55 kg.
Dans les catégories féminines, Zoe Element est sortie victorieuse de son premier duel chez les moins de 48 kg, où elle était opposée à l’Américaine Alexandra Erb, avant de s’incliner face à l’Espagnole Eva Moreno Torres.
Dalia Benhamou a quant à elle perdu contre Khulan Bayarzul, de la Mongolie, chez les moins de 44 kg.
« Personne n’a été complètement déclassé et on a eu droit à des combats très serrés, dont les résultats se sont joués à très peu », a conclu Antoine Bouchard.
Les Championnats du monde cadets reprendront vendredi. Anes Mati (-66 kg) et Jonas Nelissen (-73 kg) seront à surveiller dans le camp canadien, tout comme Leiya Chiasson (-52 kg), Nicole Daria Manaila (-57 kg), Emma Tritton (-57 kg), Victoria Summers (-63 kg) et Presley Tompkins (-63 kg).

Tenacious Roman Semyrozum earns a silver medal in Ecuador
Montréal, August 20, 2026 – Team Canada’s Roman Semyrozum earned himself a silver medal in the Under-60 kg division Thursday, at the Cadet World Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
The Montréal-based judoka ended the day with a record of three wins and one loss. In the gold medal around, Semyrizum faced off against Rassulkhan Gabit (Kazakhstan). The bout was hard-fought by both judokas and even went into overtime, but in the end, Gabit came out on top.
Canadian Coach Antoine Bouchard commented, “It was a pretty close final; both athletes had good chances of winning, but unfortunately, Roman wasn’t able to fully capitalize on his chances. His opponent maintained a high pace even during overtime, to force Roman’s third penalty.”
In an earlier round, Semyrozum defeated Rafael Falcao (Brazil) in his first matchup on the tatami. The Canadian then went on to better Akhmet Baubek (Kazakhstan) and Enkhtur Jamiyan (Mongolia), two opponents who went on to win bronze medals later in the day.
“It was a great day for Roman; he showed tremendous perseverance. He was trailing in his first two bouts, and in both cases, he kept up the pressure and picked up the pace to secure his victories. The semifinal was also a tough fight that he won on the ground.”
In his first match of the day, also competing in the Under-60 kg weight category, Canadian Amir Temirbaev saw his day come to hasty end with a defeat by Abubakr Sattorov of Uzbekistan.
Giorgi Kurashvili lost to Adilzhan Nurbeken (Kazakhstan), who went on to win the silver medal in the Under-50 kg class, while Grayson Tamura was defeated by France’s Jules Back in the Under-55 kg division.
In women’s judo competitions, Zoe Element emerged victorious in her first bout in the Under-48 kg category, where she faced Alexandra Erb (United States), before losing to Eva Moreno Torres (Spain).

“We saw some very close matches, the outcomes of which were decided by the narrowest of margins, so no one was completely outclassed,” analyzed Antoine Bouchard.
