Montreal, June 23, 2018 – Canadian judokas Marie Besson, Emily Burt, and Mohab El Nahas each won the bronze medal in their respective categories during the Pan American Cup in Lima, in Peru, on Friday and Saturday.

Marie Besson,  Emily Burt and Mohab El Nahas on the podium.

On Friday, Montrealer Marie Besson won the bronze medal in the -52 kg category. After winning her first bout, she lost against Cuban Nahomys Acosta Batte in the semi-final, but she won her next fight to bring home the bronze medal.

“She had the best result of the Canadian team on Friday. She fought well. She lost against the Cuban in the semi-final. Marie started off strong and tried many attacks where she almost scored, but the Cuban used it to finish on the ground,” explained the assistant national coach, Jean-Pierre Cantin.

Fighting in the -70 kg category on Saturday, Emily Burt also finished in third place. The Oshawa judoka won her first fight and lost in the semi-final, but she came back strong against Argentinian Anahi Galeano to win the bronze medal.

“Emily won her first fight easily, and she lost in the semi-final against a Cuban athlete. She had a good fight, and she lost in overtime after a questionable point. It was a good performance for her,” said the Canadian coach.

In the -90 kg category, Ontarian Mohab El Nahas also stood on the third step of the podium after winning against his opponent, Colombian Francisco Balanta in the bronze-medal fight. He had two victories and one loss.

Mina Coulombe (-78 kg), Jacob Valois (-66 kg), and Alex Marineau (-81 kg), from Quebec, and Ontarian Bradley Langlois (-73 kg) all finished in fifth place.

Valois, Marineau, and Langlois won two out of four bouts, while Coulombe had one victory and two losses.

Canadians Hanako Kuno (-63 kg) and Benjamin Kendrick (-90 kg) both finished in seventh place, after one victory and one loss each.
