Montréal, 30 mai 2026 – Les Canadiens ont fait table rase samedi à la Coupe panaméricaine de Lima, au Pérou, chez les cadets. Les cinq représentants de l’unifolié qui étaient en action ont atteint les finales et ils ont tous les cinq remporté la médaille d’or de leur catégorie respective.

Amir Temirbaev (-60 kg) et Anes Mati (-66 kg) ont tous les deux affronté trois adversaires au cours de leur journée afin d’atterrir sur la plus haute marche du podium. Temirbaev a été expéditif lors de ses deux premiers duels, l’emportant en moins de 90 secondes. Il a couronné sa journée en défaisant le Mexicain Arath Cruzalta Apodaca en finale.

Mati a connu une journée similaire à son compatriote en l’emportant face au Péruvien André Zegarra Gruichard et au Mexicain Efrain Carrillo Paredes avant la fin du temps réglementaire afin de rejoindre le Péruvien Yesus Perea Vallve en finale.

Chez les moins de 55 kg, Gabrieli Makhatadze a profité d’un laissez-passer en quart de finale avant de vaincre le Chilien Guillermo Carrizo et l’Américain Sebastian Terain pour terminer au sommet de sa catégorie.

Puis, Matthew Molchanov (-90 kg) et Franck David Moussima Ewane Elouti (+90 kg) ont tous deux remporté leur premier combat du tournoi à la ronde de leur catégorie et se sont ensuite imposés en finale. Molchanov a eu raison du Chilien Kenji Escrich alors que Moussima Ewane Elouti a vaincu Andres De La Hoz, lui aussi du Chili, dans le combat ultime.

L’entraîneure canadienne Erika Miranda était particulièrement satisfaite du travail de ses athlètes, elle qui n’attendait rien de moins que des podiums samedi.

« Avec le calibre de la compétition, je considère que c’était pratiquement un entraînement pour nos athlètes. Ça demeure tout de même une étape importante en vue des Championnats du monde. Ils ont été supérieurs lors de chacun de leurs combats et je suis satisfaite du résultat », a-t-elle commenté.

Les cinq judokas seront de retour sur les tatamis de Lima dimanche, alors qu’ils participeront à la Coupe panaméricaine chez les juniors.

Un retour en force de Carla Van Zyl

Carla Van Zyl a démontré toute la force de son caractère samedi, à la Coupe européenne junior de Graz, en Autriche. Chez les moins de 63 kg, Van Zyl a subi la défaite à son deuxième combat dans le tableau principal avant de se tourner vers le repêchage où elle a dû remporter trois combats d’affilée afin d’atteindre le combat pour la médaille de bronze.

La Britanno-Colombienne n’était pas au bout de ses peines puisqu’elle y avait rendez-vous avec la Brésilienne Manuela Maia qui l’avait battue en finale des Championnats panaméricains juniors il y a moins d’un mois.

Van Zyl et Maia se sont livrées un combat qui a nécessité le temps supplémentaire et c’est finalement la Canadienne qui en est sortie victorieuse grâce à un yuko.

« Elle s’est tellement bien reprise. Malgré la défaite en début de journée, elle a su trouver son rythme et elle était tellement à l’aise pendant les combats au repêchage. Elle est demeurée concentrée, elle voulait y aller étape par étape, un combat à la fois, et c’est ce qui lui a permis de se rendre jusqu’au podium », a expliqué l’entraîneur Antoine Bouchard.

Chez les moins de 73 kg, Lowan Le Bris a lui aussi disputé de nombreux combats au repêchage. Après sa défaite face au Français Kassim Brosseau, le Britanno-Colombien a vaincu l’Azéri Salim Sultanov, le Géorgien Luka Chkareuli et l’Ukrainien Roman Bankin avant de finalement s’incliner face à Giorgi Givishvili, lui aussi de la Géorgie. Il conclut la journée avec une fiche de trois victoires et deux revers.

« Lowan méritait un peu mieux, il menait le combat face au Français, mais une petite erreur lui a finalement coûté le match. Il s’est relevé et il est allé chercher trois victoires au repêchage, ce qui est assez exceptionnel », a ajouté Bouchard.

Deux Canadiennes étaient en action chez les moins de 70 kg, Missy Jen Dorval Mbele a remporté deux de ses quatre combats alors que Charlie Thibault a remporté son premier duel face à la Néerlandaise Luca Jongstra avant de s’incliner au tour suivant face à l’Allemande Alica Thiele.

De son côté, Denis Neyolov (-66 kg) a été limité à un seul affrontement samedi, à Graz.

Team Canada Golden in Lima 

Montréal, May 30, 2026 – Canadian judokas swept the podium Saturday at the Lima Cadet Panamerican Cup (Peru). All five Canadians reached the finals, and better still, all five won gold medals in their respective weight classes.

Amir Temirbaev (-60 kg) and Anes Mati (-66 kg) both faced and surpassed three opponents, and then went on to claim the top spot on the podium. Temirbaev’s wins were decisive in his first two bouts: in under 90 seconds he was victorious. He capped off his day by defeating Mexico’s Arath Cruzalta Apodaca in the final.

Mati had a similar day to his teammate, defeating Peru’s André Zegarra Gruichard and Mexico’s Efrain Carrillo Paredes before the end of regulation time, and then moving on to face Peru’s Yesus Perea Vallve in the final.

In the Under 55 kg division, Gabrieli Makhatadze received a bye in the quarterfinals before defeating Chile’s Guillermo Carrizo and the U.S.A.’s Sebastian Terain; these wins put yet another Canadian on top of the podium.

Then it was time for Matthew Molchanov (-90 kg) and Franck David Moussima Ewane Elouti (+90 kg) to take their turn on the tatami. Both won their first matches in the round-robin stage of their respective weight classes, and went on to win their finals. Molchanov defeated Chile’s Kenji Escrich, while Moussima Ewane Elouti defeated Andres De La Hoz (Chile), in the final battle.

Canadian coach Erika Miranda was very pleased with Team Canada’s performance, having expected nothing less than podium finishes on Saturday.

“Given the calibre of the competition here today, to me, this has almost been a training session for our athletes. It also remains an important step towards the World Championships. They dominated every one of their matches, and I’m pleased with the results,” she commented.

The five aforementioned judokas will be back on the tatami in Lima on Sunday, where they will compete in the Lima Junior Panamerican Cup. Stay tuned for more exciting judo action!

Carla Van Zyl demonstrates her grit

Carla Van Zyl showed exactly what she was made of Saturday at the Graz Junior European Cup in Austria. In the Under 63 kg division, Van Zyl suffered a loss in her second bout in the main bracket before moving on to the repechage. The latter was where Van Zyl truly proved her mettle, winning three straight matches to reach the bronze medal round.

However, the British Columbian’s struggles weren’t quite over yet: the Canadian had to face Brazil’s Manuela Maia, who had defeated her in the final of the Pan American Junior Championships less than a month ago.

The heated bout needed overtime in order to be settled, and ultimately, it was Van Zyl who emerged victorious thanks to a yuko.

Coach Antoine Bouchard noted that “She bounced back so well. Despite her loss earlier in the day, she did end up finding her rhythm and looked so comfortable during the repechage bouts. She stayed focused, took it one step at a time, one match at a time, and that’s what enabled her to make it to the podium.”

In the Under 73 kg division, Lowan Le Bris also fought several bouts in the repechage. After his loss to France’s Kassim Brosseau, the British Columbian defeated Azerbaijan’s Salim Sultanov, Georgia’s Luka Chkareuli, and Ukraine’s Roman Bankin before finally falling to Giorgi Givishvili (Georgia). The Canadian finished the day with a record of three wins and two losses.

“Honestly, Lowan deserved a little better; he was leading the bout against the French judoka, but a tiny mistake ultimately cost him the match. He did bounce back though, and went on to secure three wins in the repechage, which is quite exceptional,” added Bouchard.

Two Canadian women were in action on the tatami in the Under 70 kg division: Missy Jen Dorval Mbele won two of her four bouts, while Charlie Thibault won her first match against Dutch judoka Luca Jongstra, before losing in the next round to German Alica Thiele.

Denis Neyolov (-66 kg), also representing Canada, was halted after a single bout on Saturday in Graz.
