Trois médailles canadiennes malgré l’arrêt des compétitions

Montréal, 8 octobre 2024 – Treize athlètes porteront les couleurs de l’unifolié aux Championnats du monde juniors de plongeon, qui seront disputés du 24 novembre au 1erdécembre, au Brésil.
La composition de la formation canadienne a été confirmée au terme des Essais canadiens juniors Speedo présentés à Gatineau, la fin de semaine dernière. Une compétition très relevée qui a démontré l’impressionnante profondeur du programme national, comme le souligne la directrice du programme de la haute performance junior Andrée Pouliot-Deschamps.
« On a vraiment une belle équipe qui se rendra aux Championnats du monde juniors pour rivaliser, pas seulement pour participer. Tous les athlètes ont une chance d’être parmi les finalistes. J’étais très fière en regardant la compétition ! On a une belle collaboration à travers tout le pays et l’esprit d’équipe est très fort, même s’il s’agit d’un sport individuel. »
Six filles et sept garçons plongeront pour le Canada à Rio de Janeiro. De ce lot, Claude-Olivier Lisé-Coderre et Kash Tarasoff tenteront de se démarquer dans la catégorie des 14-15 ans. Lisé-Coderre a particulièrement brillé aux Essais canadiens juniors. Triple médaillé d’or, il est le seul athlète à avoir reçu une note parfaite, soit un pointage de 10 de la part des sept juges pour son cinquième plongeon, un double saut périlleux et demi renversé en position groupée, réalisée en finale de la plateforme.
« Claude-Olivier a eu toute une fin de semaine ! Je pense qu’il n’a rien raté, aux préliminaires comme dans les finales. Ce sera très intéressant de le suivre », a ajouté Andrée Pouliot-Deschamps, enjouée des performances livrées par l’ensemble des compétiteurs.
« On a fait face à quelques difficultés au cours des deux derniers mois. Avec le Stade olympique qui est toujours fermé, la fermeture du complexe sportif Claude-Robillard et celle de quelques autres piscines pour maintenance, on n’a pas eu droit à une préparation idéale, mais les athlètes ont été capables de sortir en force. Il faut parfois se fier sur nos capacités et avoir confiance en notre préparation, au travail accompli. Ça augure très bien pour les Championnats du monde juniors. »
Toujours du côté des garçons, on a eu droit à de belles batailles chez les 16-18 ans lors des Essais canadiens juniors, mettant en vedette plusieurs étoiles montantes. Ils seront finalement cinq Canadiens à participer à une épreuve chacun aux mondiaux juniors.
Emmitt Reesor s’est notamment démarqué en finale du 3 m avec une récolte exceptionnelle de 579,15 points. Il concourra à la plateforme au Brésil, comme Dean Calfacacos et Sam Talbot. Arnaud Corbeil s’alignera à l’épreuve du 3 m, tandis que Sam McCaffrey sera du 1 m.
En ce qui concerne les athlètes féminines de 16-18 ans, on retrouve Lila Stewart, double médaillée d’or aux Essais canadiens, ainsi que Mathilde Laberge, qui est aussi montée deux fois sur le podium à Gatineau. Renée Batalla sera la troisième Canadienne en action dans le groupe A.
Dans le groupe B, Lila Gokiert prendra part au 1 m, au 3 m et à la plateforme, trois épreuves auxquelles elle a décroché une médaille aux Essais canadiens, soit une d’or et deux d’argent. Elle sera accompagnée d’Ella Lindsay, deux fois décorée le week-end dernier, mais aussi de Mackenzie Van Houtte-Cachero, qui en a impressionné plusieurs au 1 m.
« Ce sont trois bonnes athlètes, très talentueuses ! Mackenzie a commencé durant la pandémie, sur le tard au niveau compétitif. Elle est moins expérimentée, mais a beaucoup de talent et a gagné le 1 m, sa première médaille d’or ! En fait, elle est la seule pour qui les Championnats du monde représenteront une toute première compétition internationale », a précisé Andrée Pouliot-Deschamps.
Médaillés d’argent aux Championnats du monde juniors de 2022, à Montréal, Arnaud Corbeil et Renée Batalla en seront à une deuxième présence à cet événement, tout comme Emmitt Reesor, Sam Talbot, et Mathilde Laberge.
Les athlètes qui représenteront le pays dans les épreuves synchronisées seront déterminés sous peu.

Thirteen Promising Athletes Selected for Junior World Championships
Montréal, October 8, 2024 – Thirteen athletes will sport Canada’s colours at the Junior World Diving Championships, being held in Brazil from November 24 to December 1.
The Canadian lineup was finalized following the Speedo Canadian Junior Trials in Gatineau this past weekend. According to junior high-performance program director Andrée Pouliot-Deschamps, the highly competitive event showcased the impressive depth of the national program.
“We have a great team for the Junior World Championships. They’re not just participants, they’re true contenders. All of them could make it to the finals. While watching the competition, I felt really proud! There’s great collaboration all across the country, and we have great team spirit, even though it’s an individual sport.”
Six girls and seven boys will represent Canada in Rio de Janeiro. Among them, Claude-Olivier Lisé-Coderre and Kash Tarasoff will attempt to make their marks in the 14-and-15-year-old age group. Lisé-Coderre put in a particularly impressive performance at the Junior Canadian Trials. With three gold medals, he was the only athlete to obtain a perfect score of ten—which he received from all seven judges for his fifth dive, a reverse two and a half somersault in tuck position that he performed in the platform finals.
“Claude-Olivier had quite the weekend! I don’t think he made a single mistake, in the preliminaries or in the finals. He will be a very interesting one to watch,” added Pouliot-Deschamps, clearly delighted with the performances of all the competitors.
“We’ve faced several challenges over the past two months. With the Olympic Stadium still closed, the Claude-Robillard Sports Complex closed, and a few other pools closed for maintenance, we haven’t been able to prepare the way we would have liked to, but nevertheless, the athletes still managed to do extremely well. Sometimes, you just have to rely on your preparation and the work you’ve put in. It bodes very well for the Junior World Championships.”
In the boys’ 16-to-18-year-old age group, there were some fierce battles at the Canadian Junior Trials, featuring a number of rising stars. Five of them will compete in one event each at the Junior World Championships.
Emmitt Reesor stood out in the 3m final, with an exceptional score of 579.15 points. He will compete in the platform event in Brazil, along with Dean Calfacacos and Sam Talbot. Arnaud Corbeil will compete in the 3m event, while Sam McCaffrey takes part in the 1m.
Lila Stewart, two-time gold medallist at the Canadian Trials, and Mathilde Laberge, also a two-time medallist in Gatineau, will compete in the girls’ 16-to-18-year-old category. Renée Batalla will be the third Canadian in Group A.
In Group B, Lila Gokiert will take part in the 1m, 3m, and platform events—the events in which she won medals at the Canadian Trials: one gold and two silver. She will be accompanied by Ella Lindsay, two-time medallist last weekend, and Mackenzie Van Houtte-Cachero, who wowed many on the 1m board.
“They’re three very good, very talented athletes! Mackenzie started during the pandemic, which was late as far as competition goes. She has less experience than the others, but she’s very talented, and she won the 1m—her first gold medal! In fact, she’s the only athlete for whom the World Championships will be her first international competition,” noted Pouliot-Deschamps.
For Corbeil and Batalla, who won silver medals at the 2022 Junior World Championships in Montréal, it will be their second appearance at this event, as it will for Reesor, Talbot, and Laberge.
The athletes who will represent Canada in the synchronized events will be determined shortly.
