Montréal, 29 octobre 2023 – Après la médaille d’argent de Julien Frascadore (-66 kg) gagnée la veille aux Jeux panaméricains de Santiago, trois autres Canadiens sont montés sur le podium de leur catégorie respective dimanche. Isabelle Harris est celle qui a le mieux fait en terminant au deuxième rang chez les moins de 63 kg.
Harris a subi sa seule défaite de la journée en grande finale où elle a baissé pavillon devant la Cubaine Maylin Del Toro Carvajal, 20e au classement mondial de la catégorie, terminant ainsi sur la seconde marche du podium.
« J’aurais réellement aimé me rendre jusqu’au bout pour aller chercher la médaille d’or, mais je suis satisfaite du chemin parcouru. La journée n’a pas été la plus facile. Cette médaille représente beaucoup pour moi, ce sont mes premiers Grands Jeux, c’est un moment très spécial et j’en suis fière », a noté Harris.
En début de journée, la Britanno-Colombienne avait vaincu la Mexicaine Prisca Awiti Alcaraz en quart de finale avant de venir à bout de la Brésilienne Ketleyn Quadros pour obtenir son billet pour la finale. Les deux victoires d’Harris ont été acquises par ippon.
« J’ai profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour avant d’affronter la Mexicaine qui m’avait déjà battue par le passé. J’ai respecté mon plan de match à la lettre et j’ai été en mesure de la projeter à deux reprises pour l’emporter. La Brésilienne aussi est une excellente athlète, j’étais en confiance et j’ai réussi à aller chercher une deuxième victoire », a ajouté Harris.
Le Québécois Antoine Bouchard était de son côté en action chez les moins de 73 kg. Sa journée de travail a bien mal commencé par une défaite d’entrée de jeu devant le Brésilien Daniel Cargnin. Heureusement pour Bouchard, il a rapidement eu l’occasion de se reprendre au repêchage.
L’athlète de 29 ans n’a pas raté cette chance. Il a signé une victoire face au Chilien Juan Pablo Vega afin d’obtenir son billet vers un duel pour une médaille de bronze. Bouchard a alors poursuivi sa lancée et a remporté ce dernier duel, en prolongation, contre le Dominicain Antonio Tornal.
Cette médaille a un caractère assez particulier pour celui qui prendra sa retraite sportive dans les prochains mois.
« C’est ma dernière compétition majeure, à part une compétition à Montréal. C’était un de mes derniers objectifs, d’aller chercher une médaille ici (aux Jeux panaméricains), heureusement, j’ai été capable de l’accomplir après un combat qui a été très serré. Je suis vraiment content ! » a mentionné Bouchard.
Quant à lui, David Popovici, dernier Canadien en action dimanche, est lui aussi monté sur la troisième marche du podium. L’athlète de Dorval a remporté son premier combat chez les moins de 81 kg face à l’Américain Kell Berliner. Il s’est ensuite incliné en quart de finale face au Brésilien Guilherme Schmidt, troisième au classement mondial de la catégorie et futur médaillé d’or des Jeux panaméricains.
Popovici n’a pas baissé les bras et il s’est repris de belle façon au repêchage. Il a vaincu l’Argentin Tomas Morales, en route vers un combat pour la médaille de bronze.
Le judoka de 21 ans a terminé sa journée en beauté en s’imposant au terme d’un long combat qui s’est conclu en prolongation face au Cubain Maikel Mc Kenzie Londres.
« Je suis vraiment content ! Je suis très heureux de participer aux Jeux panaméricains et encore plus d’avoir gagné une médaille. La fatigue a embarqué dans le dernier combat, j’ai poussé jusqu’à la dernière minute pour l’emporter. Je m’attendais à un long combat, j’étais nerveux parce que je voulais vraiment une médaille », a indiqué Popovici.
« Honnêtement, je suis très fier de nos athlètes aujourd’hui (dimanche). Mes attentes ont clairement été surpassées jusqu’à présent. Chaque athlète s’est présenté avec le désir de gagner et c’est réellement ce qui a pu faire la différence », s’est réjoui l’entraîneur Sasha Mehmedovic.
Lundi, lors de la dernière journée des compétitions individuelles aux Jeux panaméricains, Coralie Godbout (-78 kg), Shady ElNahas (-100 kg) et Marc Deschênes (+100 kg) seront les trois représentants de l’unifolié en action.

Three More Canadians on Podium in Santiago
Montréal, October 29, 2023 – In the wake of Julien Frascadore’s (-66 kg) silver medal performance yesterday at the Pan-American Games in Santiago, three more Canadians reached the podium in their respective categories on Sunday. Isabelle Harris had the best result, finishing second in the under-63 kg weight category.
Her only loss of the day came at the hands of Cuba’s Maylin Del Toro Carvajal—who is ranked 20th in the world in the weight class—in the big final.
“I would really have liked to go all the way and win the gold medal, but I’m still satisfied with how things went. It was not an easy day. This medal means a lot to me. These are my first Games, this is a very special moment, and I’m proud of it,” said Harris.
Earlier, the British Columbian had defeated Prisca Awiti Alcaraz of Mexico in the quarter-final, before disposing of Ketleyn Quadros of Brazil to claim her spot in the big final. Harris won both her matches by ippon.
“I had a bye in the first round, then I was up against the Mexican, who has beaten me in the past. I followed my game plan to the letter, and I managed to throw her twice to win. The Brazilian is also an excellent athlete, but I was feeling confident, and I won a second time,” she added.
Quebec’s Antoine Bouchard competed in the under-73 kg category. His day got off to a rough start when he lost to Daniel Cargnin of Brazil. Fortunately for the 29-year-old, however, he soon had the opportunity to get back on track in the repechage.
He made the most of it, defeating Juan Pablo Vega of Chile to advance to the bronze medal final, where he bested Antonio Tornal of the Dominican Republic in overtime to claim the hardware.
The medal holds special significance for Bouchard, who will retire from sport in the next few months.
“This is my last major competition, except for one in Montréal. One of my final goals was to win a medal here [at the Pan-American Games]. Luckily, I did it, following a very tight match. I’m really happy!” exclaimed Bouchard.
The last Canadian competitor of the day was David Popovici, who also won a bronze medal in the under-81 kg division. The judoka from Dorval began his day by defeating Kell Berliner of the USA. Next, in the quarter-final, he bowed out to Guilherme Schmidt of Brazil, who is ranked third in the world in the weight class and who later won the gold medal. Popovici did not let the loss slow him down, however, and he took control once again in the repechage, ousting Tomas Morales of Argentina to secure his spot in the bronze medal match.
The 21-year-old judoka then ended the day in fine style, securing the victory in overtime after a long bout against Maikel Mc Kenzie Londres of Cuba.
“I’m very happy! I’m really glad to be competing at the Pan-American Games, and even more excited to have won a medal. I started feeling some fatigue in my final fight, but I pushed through to the very end to win. I knew it would probably be a long bout, and I was nervous because I really wanted a medal,” stated Popovici.
“Frankly, I’m proud of our athletes today [Sunday]. So far, all of my expectations have clearly been surpassed. Every single athlete showed up here with a desire to win, and that’s truly what’s made the difference,” enthused coach Sasha Mehmedovic.
On Monday, Canadians Coralie Godbout (-78 kg), Shady ElNahas (-100 kg) and Marc Deschênes (+100 kg) will hit the tatamis on the final day of individual competition at the Pan-American Games.
