Judo Canada - Open panaméricain
Montréal, 10 septembre 2022 – Les judokas canadiens ont raflé trois médailles à l’Open panaméricain de Saint-Domingue, samedi, en République dominicaine. Julien Frascadore s’est particulièrement démarqué, décrochant l’argent chez les moins de 66 kg.
Il s’agissait d’un retour dans cette catégorie pour Frascadore, lui qui a combattu avec les moins de 60 kg pendant un certain temps. Un changement qui ne l’a pas inquiété en début de journée. Au contraire, il était ravi de pouvoir arriver prêt pour le tournoi, sans avoir à perdre du poids.
« Je me sens bien ! Je voulais retrouver mes repères et revoir comment ça se passait ! C’est différent, ça bouge beaucoup moins vite, mais les athlètes sont plus forts physiquement. Je suis content de ma performance. J’ai eu de belles expériences en 60 kg, mais je pense vraiment que je suis dans la bonne catégorie », a-t-il précisé.
Samedi, il a d’abord battu le Colombien Jorge Gonzalez en toute fin de combat, puis a profité de la disqualification du Mexicain Robin Jara pour passer en demi-finale. Julien Frascadore s’est dit fier de son travail contre l’’Argentin Joaquin Tovagliari, où il a usé de stratégie pour accéder à la grande finale.
Il s’est ensuite mesuré à Willis Garcia, du Venezuela. Pénalisé après seulement 30 secondes, le Québécois s’est fait surprendre avec 2 minutes 44 secondes à faire. Son adversaire l’a fait pivoter et l’a projeté au sol afin de l’emporter par ippon.
« C’est un gars que je connais assez bien et je me suis battu plusieurs fois contre lui à l’entraînement. Malheureusement, ma stratégie n’a pas très bien fonctionné. Je retourne à la maison et je vais travailler sur mes erreurs pour revenir plus fort », a ajouté le médaillé d’argent.
Toujours chez les moins de 66 kg, Daniel Mccristall et Yanis Hachemi ont été limités à un duel chacun.
De son côté, Joel Demaere a été défait au repêchage dans la catégorie des moins de 60 kg. Il a conclu la journée avec une victoire et deux revers.
Scénario similaire pour Munkhjin Batdorj chez les moins de 73 kg, tandis que Justin Lemire, lui, a connu un peu plus de succès.
Il a conclu la compétition sur la troisième marche du podium de cette classe. À son quatrième combat, il a fait face au Mexicain Eduardo Cardoso. Les deux judokas ont rapidement été pénalisés à deux occasions.
Il ne restait que 13 secondes au tableau indicateur lorsque Lemire a réussi à maîtriser Cardoso pour s’imposer par ippon.
Dans le même tableau, Gunner Floyd s’est quant à lui incliné à son seul duel, au premier tour.
Isabelle Harris reçoit le bronze
Isabelle Harris a été la seule Canadienne à se frayer un chemin jusqu’au podium samedi. Elle a mis la main sur une médaille de bronze des moins de 63 kg en l’emportant par ippon contre la Mexicaine Katia Castillo.
Harris est rapidement passée à l’offensive dans ce face-à-face. Elle n’a eu besoin que de 64 secondes pour faire chavirer son opposante et sortir victorieuse.
En action chez les moins de 48 kg, Kimiko Kamstra est arrivée tout juste à court. Elle a perdu son combat contre la Colombienne Erika Lasso pour terminer au pied du podium. Eibhleann Alexander a aussi fini en cinquième place des moins de 57 kg. Elle a été défaite par Kristine Jimenez, du Panama, en fin de journée.
Pour sa part, Launa Hinton (-52 kg) a perdu son unique combat du jour.
L’Open panaméricain se poursuivra dimanche à Saint-Domingue. Laurence Biron combattra chez les moins de 70 kg, alors qu’Alicia Fiandor, Coralie Godbout et Mina Coulombe seront toutes à surveiller chez les moins de 78 kg. Jeremie Blain (-81 kg), Alexandre Arencibia (-90 kg) et Ian Ryder (-100 kg) fouleront aussi les tatamis.

Three Canadian Judokas Reach Podium
Montréal, September 10, 2022 – Canada’s judokas clinched three medals at the Santo Domingo Pan-American Open in the Dominican Republic on Saturday. Julien Frascadore did particularly well, winning a silver medal in the under-73 kg category.
It was a return to the under-73 kg weight class for Frascadore, who most recently competed in the under-66 kg group. However, the change did not faze him whatsoever. In fact, he was delighted at not having to lose weight in preparation for the tournament!
“I feel good! I was looking forward to getting my bearings again and seeing how things would go. It’s different. It’s not as fast-moving, but the athletes are physically stronger. I’m happy with my performance. I had some great experiences in the under-66 kg category, but I feel like this is where I belong,” he explained.
Frascadore began his day Saturday with a down-to-the-wire victory over Colombia’s Jorge Gonzalez, before advancing to the semi-final thanks to the disqualification of Mexico’s Robin Jara. He was proud of his semi-final bout against Joaquin Tovagliari of Argentina, against whom he fought strategically in order to advance to the grand final, where he faced Willis Garcia of Venezuela. After being penalized only 30 seconds into the final match, the Québécois was defeated with 2:44 left to go in regulation time, when Garcia spun him and threw him to the ground to win by ippon.
“I know [Garcia] pretty well and I’ve fought him several times in training. Unfortunately, my strategy today didn’t work too well. When I get home, I’ll work on my errors and come back stronger next time,” added the silver medallist.
Daniel McCristall and Yanis Hachemi, who compete in the under-66 kg division, were limited to one bout each.
In the under-60 kg group, Joel Demaere was defeated in the repechage. He finished the day with a record of one win and two losses.
Munkhjin Batdorj saw similar results in the under-73 kg category, while Justin Lemire concluded the competition on the third step of the podium in the same weight class. In his fourth bout, he squared off against Eduardo Cardoso of Mexico. Both judokas quickly received two penalties each. Only thirteen seconds remained on the board when Lemire overpowered Cardoso and won by ippon.
In the same pool, Gunner Floyd lost his first and only fight of the day.
Bronze for Isabelle Harris
Isabelle Harris was the only Canadian woman to reach the podium on Saturday. She secured a bronze medal in the under-63 kg category by defeating Katia Castillo of Mexico by ippon.
Harris quickly went on the offensive in her bout against Castillo. She needed only 64 seconds to knock her opponent down and clinch the match.
In under-48 kg action, Kimiko Kamstra came up just short of a spot on the podium. She finished fifth after losing to Colombia’s Erika Lasso. Eibhleann Alexander also finished fifth in the under-57 kg group after being defeated by Panama’s Kristine Jimenez at the end of the day.
Launa Hinton (-52 kg) lost her only fight of the day.
The Pan-American Open will continue on Sunday in Santo Domingo. Laurence Biron will fight in the under-70 kg category, while Alicia Fiandor, Coralie Godbout and Mina Coulombe will compete in the under-78 kg division. Jeremie Blain (-81 kg), Alexandre Arencibia (-90 kg) and Ian Ryder (-100 kg) will also hit the tatamis on Sunday.
