Médaillée de bronze, Catherine Toshkov poursuit sa lancée

Coupe européenne junior et Grand prix
Montréal, 9 mars 2025 – Les jeunes athlètes canadiens ont poursuivi leur lancée dimanche à la Coupe européenne junior de Portimao, au Portugal. Après la médaille de bronze de Catherine Toshkov samedi, trois autres représentants de l’unifolié sont montés sur la troisième marche du podium dimanche, en clôture de l’événement.
Carla Van Zyl (-57 kg), Valeria Kostrovets (-52 kg) et Yehor Paladii (-100 kg) ont tous remporté leur dernier combat de la journée afin de terminer la compétition avec une médaille de bronze autour du cou.
Van Zyl a réussi l’exploit après avoir tiré de l’arrière en finale de bronze face à la Française Clarisse Carillon. Après avoir vu son adversaire réussir un waza-ari et un yuko, la Britanno-Colombienne a pris les choses en main, réussissant deux waza-aris dans la dernière minute du combat pour l’emporter.
« Quel match ! Je me rongeais les ongles sur les lignes de côtés. Carla a appris énormément aujourd’hui. Son duel était très excitant, elle tirait de l’arrière, mais n’a jamais abandonné. Elle a repris l’avantage et a réussi à l’emporter dans les dernières secondes. Je suis très heureux de cette victoire », a partagé l’entraîneur canadien Sasha Mehmedovic.
Van Zyl avait remporté ses deux premiers combats de la journée face aux Italiennes Nina Gambardella et Martina Capezzuto, avant de s’incliner, en temps supplémentaire, en demi-finales face à Michela Terranova, elle aussi de l’Italie.
Terranova a finalement été médaillée d’argent de la catégorie.
Il s’agit de la troisième médaille de Van Zyl lors d’une Coupe continentale junior, elle qui avait notamment remporté l’or à Montréal en novembre dernier.
Toujours chez les moins de 57 kg, Hayden Thibeault a remis une fiche d’une victoire et deux défaites.
La semaine dernière à Malaga, Valeria Kostrovets avait subi la défaite à ses deux seuls combats de la fin de semaine. Elle ne voulait pas répéter un scénario similaire à Portimao et elle a réussi sa mission.
La Québécoise a remporté ses deux premiers duels de la journée avant de s’incliner en demi-finales face à l’Espagnole Monica Martinez de Rituerto Morillas, éventuelle médaillée d’argent.
Kostrovets ne s’est pas laissée abattre par cette défaite, en revenant en force en finale de bronze pour l’emporter en prolongation contre la Britannique Maddy Kissenisky.
« Valeria a démontré beaucoup de caractères aujourd’hui. Son match de médaille de bronze a été très long. Elle semblait manquer d’énergie, mais elle n’a jamais arrêté de se battre. Elle a bien respecté le plan de match et elle a gagné quand son adversaire a été pénalisé pour une troisième fois », a raconté le pilote canadien.
Du côté des moins de 48 kg, Angelina McCristall a été éliminée dès son premier combat du jour face à l’Italienne Aurora Platania.
À l’instar de Valeria Kostrovets, Yehor Paladii voulait également se reprendre après avoir vu une médaille de bronze lui échapper la semaine dernière à Malaga.
L’athlète de 18 ans a amorcé sa journée avec une victoire convaincante face au Portugais Danilo Storozhuk, avant de plier l’échine au tour suivant contre le Kazakh Sanzhar Yerulanuly.
Paladii n’a pas baissé les bras, enchaînant deux victoires au repêchage afin d’atteindre la finale de bronze face au Polonais Damian Kubiak. Le Canadien n’a eu besoin que de 49 secondes pour venir à bout de son adversaire.
« Yehor semblait en contrôle en quarts de finale, mais son adversaire l’a surpris avec une clé de bras. Il n’a pas abandonné par la suite, il a travaillé fort le reste de la journée pour pouvoir se retrouver en finale de bronze et éventuellement sur le podium. Je suis très fier de lui », a conclu Mehmedovic.
Coralie Godbout limitée à un seul combat
De son côté, Coralie Godbout était en action au Grand prix de Linz, en Autriche, dans la catégorie des moins de 78 kg.
Après avoir profité d’un laissez-passer en début de tournoi, la Québécoise s’est butée à l’Allemande Eva Ronja Buddenkotte au tour suivant. L’Allemande a réussi un ippon dans la première minute du combat pour mettre fin à la journée de travail de Godbout.
L’Ukrainienne Yuliia Kurchenko a vaincu la Britannique Emma Reid en grande finale pour remporter la médaille d’or.

Canada Captures Three Bronze Medals in Portimão
Montréal, March 9, 2025 – Canada’s young athletes maintained their momentum on Sunday at the Junior European Cup in Portimão, Portugal. Following in the steps of Catherine Toshkov, who won a bronze medal on Saturday, three additional Canadians climbed to the third step of the podium as the tournament came to a close on Sunday.
Carla Van Zyl (-57 kg), Valeria Kostrovets (-52 kg), and Yehor Paladii (-100 kg) were each awarded a bronze medal after winning their respective final bouts.
In her bronze medal match against Clarisse Carillon of France, British Columbia’s Van Zyl came from behind to secure the win, scoring two waza-ari in the final minute to pull ahead of her opponent, who had scored a waza-ari and a yuko earlier in the bout.
“What a match! I was chewing my fingernails on the sidelines. Carla really learned a lot today. Her bout was really exciting. Although she was trailing, she never gave up. She took back the lead and won in the final seconds. I’m extremely happy with her win,” said Canadian coach Sasha Mehmedovic.
Earlier in the day, Van Zyl had defeated Italians Nina Gambardella and Martina Capezzuto, before bowing out to Italy’s Michela Terranova in a semi-final match that went into overtime.
Terranova later won the category’s silver medal.
Today’s medal was Van Zyl’s third at a Junior Continental Cup. Last November, she won gold in Montréal.
Also in the under-57 kg weight class, Hayden Thibeault finished the day with a record of one win and two losses.
Last week in Málaga, Valeria Kostrovets lost her only two bouts of the weekend, and she had no intention of seeing the scenario repeat itself in Portimão. She succeeded in her mission.
The Québécoise won her first two bouts of the day, but lost to Monica Martinez de Rituerto Morillas of Spain in the semi-final.
Undaunted, Kostrovets came back strong in her bronze medal final, clinching the win in overtime against Maddy Kissenisky of Great Britain. Martinez de Rituerto Morillas went on to win the silver medal.
“Valeria showed a lot of character today. Her bronze medal match went on for a very long time. Her energy seemed to lag at one point, but she never stopped fighting. She stuck to her game plan and won the bout when her opponent received a third penalty,” explained Mehmedovic.
In the under-48 weight class, Angelina McCristall was eliminated in her first match of the day by Italy’s Aurora Platania.
Like Kostrovets, Yehor Paladii also had something to prove today, after he saw a bronze medal slip through his fingers last weekend in Málaga.
The 18-year-old began his day with a convincing victory over Portugal’s Danilo Storozhuk, but bowed out to Kazakhstan’s Sanzhar Yerulanuly in the next round.
Paladii nevertheless pushed on, winning two back-to-back bouts in the repechage to advance to the bronze medal final, where he faced Poland’s Damian Kubiak. The Canadian dispatched of his opponent in 49 seconds.
“In the quarter-finals, Yehor appeared to be in control, but his opponent managed to get him into an arm lock. Nevertheless, he kept working hard all day, and he made his way to the bronze medal final and ultimately, the podium. I’m very proud of him,” concluded Mehmedovic.
A single bout for Coralie Godbout
At the Linz Grand Prix in Austria, Coralie Godbout was in action in the under-78 kg category today.
After receiving a first-round bye, the Québécoise found herself up against Eva Ronja Buddenkotte of Germany in the next round. Buddenkotte scored an ippon in the first minute of combat, effectively putting an end to Godbout’s work day.
In the category’s big final, Yuliia Kurchenko of Ukraine defeated Emma Reid of Great Britain to capture the gold medal.
