Judo Canada – Grand Chelem
Montréal, 24 octobre 2023 – Les Canadiennes Jessica Klimkait et Christa Deguchi se sont retrouvées l’une contre l’autre en finale d’un Grand Chelem pour la troisième fois depuis le début de l’année 2023. Klimkait l’avait emporté à Tel-Aviv, en février, alors que Deguchi était sortie victorieuse du plus récent affrontement à Oulan-Bator, en juin.
Mardi, au Grand Chelem d’Abou Dabi, aux Émirats arabes unis, c’est Jessica Klimkait qui a pris l’avantage de la série entre les deux rivales de l’unifolié en s’imposant en prolongation pour monter sur la plus haute marche du podium chez les moins de 57 kg.
Se connaissant extrêmement bien toutes les deux, les finalistes se sont livré un duel qui avait des allures d’un grand match d’échecs, alors que chaque mouvement était bien calculé pour ne pas laisser d’ouverture. Au début de la prolongation, Deguchi comptait deux shidos contre un seul du côté de Klimkait.
L’Ontarienne a profité de ce léger avantage pour demeurer patiente et prudente dans ses attaques, avant de finalement provoquer une troisième pénalité à Deguchi pour non-combativité.
« Ç’a été un combat très serré et très tactique entre les deux meilleures moins de 57 kg de la planète ! C’est une bonne victoire pour Jessica au niveau des points et pour sa confiance également », a commenté l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Valois-Fortier.
Pour se rendre jusqu’à la plus haute marche du podium, Jessica Klimkait a profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour avant de battre coup sur coup Fidan Alizada, de l’Azerbaïdjan, l’athlète individuelle neutre Daria Kurbonmamadova, ainsi que l’Allemande Seija Ballhaus.
De son côté, Deguchi a eu raison de la Française Ophélie Vellozzi, de la Britannique Lele Neirne et de l’Allemande Pauline Starke avant de croiser le fer avec Klimkait en finale.
« Les deux ont fait une très belle journée en remportant des combats serrés en demi-finale. Elles ont montré une grande force de caractère et elles prouvent qu’elles sont encore au-dessus de la compétition sur plusieurs aspects », a ajouté l’entraîneur.
Dans le tableau des moins de 52 kg, Kelly Deguchi a été limitée à un seul combat, elle qui a baissé pavillon au premier tour contre l’Espagnole Ariane Toro Soler.
« C’est une journée décevante pour Kelly. Elle s’est fait surprendre par un waza-ari en début de combat et elle n’a pas été en mesure de revenir par la suite. Elle voudra se reprendre le plus tôt possible », a conclu Valois-Fortier
Le Grand Chelem d’Abou Dabi se poursuit mercredi, alors que les Québécois Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg) et François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) seront en action.

Another Klimkait–Deguchi Final
Montréal, October 24, 2023 – For the third time this year, Canadians Jessica Klimkait and Christa Deguchi found themselves going head-to-head in a Grand Slam final. Klimkait won the Tel Aviv Grand Slam in February, while Deguchi prevailed in their most recent showdown in Ulaanbaatar in June.
On Tuesday, at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam, it was Klimkait who pulled ahead in the series between the two Canadian rivals, winning the under-57 kg final in overtime and claiming the top spot on the podium.
The two finalists, who know each other very well, squared off in a battle that resembled a major chess game, with every move calculated to avoid leaving an opening.
At the start of overtime, Deguchi had received two shidos to Klimkait’s one. The Ontarian made the most of her slight advantage, remaining patient and cautious in her attacks until Deguchi received a third penalty for non-combativity.
“It was a very tight, very tactical fight between the two best under-57 kg judokas on the planet! The win is great for Jessica’s points, as well as for her confidence,” said Canadian coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.
Klimkait began her journey to the top of the podium with a first-round bye. Next, she defeated Fidan Alizada of Azerbaijan, individual neutral athlete Daria Kurbonmamadova, and Seija Ballhaus of Germany in back-to-back bouts.
As for Deguchi, she ousted Ophélie Vellozzi of France, Lele Neirne of Great Britain, and Pauline Starke of Germany before crossing swords with Klimkait in the final.
“Both of them had a great day, and both won close fights in the semi-finals. They showed great strength of character and proved they’re still ahead of the competition in many respects,” added Valois-Fortier.
In the under-52 kg weight division, Kelly Deguchi lost her first and only bout of the day to Ariane Toro Soler of Spain.
“It’s been a disappointing day for Kelly. She got caught in a waza-ari at the beginning of the bout, and wasn’t able to recover afterwards. She’s going to want to get back on track as soon as possible,” concluded the coach.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam will continue on Wednesday. Quebeckers Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg) and François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) will both be in action.
