Judo Canada – Open panaméricain
Montréal, 11 septembre 2022 – Deux Canadiens sont parvenus à remporter une médaille dimanche, à l’Open panaméricain de Saint-Domingue, en République dominicaine. Alexandre Arencibia a mis la main sur la médaille d’argent des moins de 90 kg, alors que Coralie Godbout a vaincu sa coéquipière Mina Coulombe chez les moins de 78 kg pour se sauver avec une médaille de bronze.
Alexandre Arencibia a affronté le Dominicain Robert Florentino en finale, lui qui l’a emporté par ippon avec 2 minutes et 45 secondes à faire au combat.
« Je me sens plutôt bien ! Ce n’est pas le résultat attendu, mais je sais ce que je dois pratiquer et améliorer dans la prochaine semaine pour essayer d’aller chercher l’or en Colombie, dans deux semaines », a-t-il fait savoir.
Le Montréalais avait défait le Chilien Daniel Arancibia en début de tournoi, puis le Colombien Daniel Paz Albarracin en demi-finale.
« Au début de la journée, je ressentais un peu de stress, mais du bon stress ! J’avais très confiance en mes capacités pour atteindre la finale. »
De son côté, Ian Ryder a raté le podium de peu dimanche. Il a d’abord signé une victoire contre le Haïtien Billy Mondestin, dans la catégorie des moins de 100 kg, pour ensuite perdre contre le Colombien Francisco Balanta en demi-finale. Ryder s’est mesuré au Chilien Thomas Briceno pour une médaille de bronze, dans un duel qui a nécessité une prolongation. Après 58 secondes de temps supplémentaire, le Canadien a écopé d’une troisième pénalité et a dû s’avouer vaincu.
Chez les moins de 81 kg, Jeremie Blain a affiché une fiche d’une victoire et deux défaites.
Coralie Godbout a le dernier mot
On a eu droit à un affrontement tout canadien pour l’obtention d’une médaille de bronze chez les moins de 78 kg, opposant Coralie Godbout à Mina Coulombe. Les deux judokas se connaissant plutôt bien, ce fut un face-à-face chaudement disputé. Il ne restait que 57 secondes lorsque Godbout a réussi un ippon pour monter sur la troisième marche du podium.
Laurence Biron a elle aussi combattu pour le bronze chez les moins de 70 kg, mais a perdu contre l’Irlandaise Rachael Hawkes afin de terminer cinquième. Elle avait défait l’Américaine Isabella Garriga et la Dominicaine Katherine Otano Pina. Elle s’est inclinée contre la Cubaine Idelannis Gomez Feria, en demi-finale.
Aussi de cette catégorie, Alicia Fiandor a passé le premier tour avant de conclure sa journée avec deux revers.
La délégation canadienne avait également brillé à Saint-Domingue samedi. Julien Frascadore s’est emparé de la médaille d’argent chez les moins de 66 kg, tandis que Justin Lemire (-73 kg) et Isabelle Harris (-63 kg) sont tous les deux repartis avec une médaille de bronze.

Canadians Conclude with Pair of Medals
Montréal, September 11, 2022 – Two Canadians captured medals at the Santo Domingo Pan-American Open in the Dominican Republic on Sunday. Alexandre Arencibia won silver in the under-90 kg category, while Coralie Godbout defeated her teammate Mina Coulombe in the under-78 kg group to secure bronze.
In the grand final, Arencibia was pitted against Robert Florentino of the Dominican Republic, who won by ippon with 2:45 left to go in the match.
“I feel pretty good. It’s not the result I had hoped for, but I know what I have to work on in the coming week to try to win gold in Colombia in two weeks,” he explained.
The Montrealer ousted Daniel Arancibia of Chile in the first round, then went on to defeat Daniel Paz Albarracin of Colombia in the semi-final.
“I was stressed at the beginning of the day, but it was a good kind of stress! I felt confident in my ability to make it to the final.”
Ian Ryder finished just short of the podium on Sunday. He began with a victory over Haiti’s Billy Mondestin in the under-100 kg weight division, but lost to Colombia’s Francisco Balanta in the semi-final. He then battled Chile’s Thomas Briceno for bronze in a fight that went into Golden Score. After 58 seconds of overtime, the Canadian received a third penalty and had to concede defeat.
In the under-81 kg group, Jeremie Blain recorded one win and two losses.
Coralie Godbout has the last word
It was an all-Canadian battle for bronze between Coralie Godbout and Mina Coulombe in the under-78 kg category . The two judokas know each other well, so the match was a tight one. With only 57 seconds left, Godbout scored an ippon to claim the third spot on the podium.
Laurence Biron also fought for bronze in the under-70 kg group, but lost to Ireland’s Rachael Hawkes and finished fifth. Earlier, she had defeated Isabella Garriga of the USA and Katherine Otano Pina of the Dominican Republic, before bowing out to Cuba’s Idelannis Gomez Feria in the semi-final.
In the same weight class, Alicia Fiandor won in the first round, but finished the day with a record of two losses.
The Canadian delegation also had a strong showing on Saturday in Santo Domingo. Julien Frascadore won silver in the under-66 kg group, while Justin Lemire (-73 kg) and Isabelle Harris (-63 kg) both captured bronze.
