Montréal, 8 février 2025 – Laurence Biron et Daniil Kremerman ont été les deux seuls représentants de l’unifolié à trouver le chemin de la victoire samedi, à l’Open européen de judo de Ljubljana, en Slovénie. Les deux Canadiens ont toutefois été défaits dès leur deuxième combat de la journée.   

Dans la catégorie des moins de 63 kg, Biron a disputé deux longs duels dans la capitale slovène. Au premier tour, son combat face à la Suisse Olivia Gertsch s’est rendu en temps supplémentaire où la Québécoise est sortie gagnante après que son adversaire ait été pénalisée à trois reprises.

Au tour suivant, la Canadienne avait rendez-vous avec la Hongroise Brigitta Varga dans un autre affrontement où la prolongation a été nécessaire. Après une minute de temps supplémentaire, Biron, qui avait déjà accumulé deux pénalités, a été surprise par son adversaire, qui a réalisé un yuko pour l’emporter.

« Ç’a été deux combats très serrés pour Laurence qui revient d’une blessure, elle n’avait pas combattu en tournoi depuis juin dernier. Elle n’a pas mal fait, ça s’est terminé sur un point qui était vraiment limite contre la Hongroise, mais pour un retour, c’était très bien pour elle, c’est encourageant », a commenté l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Bouchard.

« Le yuko est un nouveau score qui vient d’être instauré. C’est plus petit qu’un waza-ari et en temps réglementaire, tu peux les accumuler à l’infini, mais ça peut te permettre de gagner après quatre minutes. Et évidemment, ça peut mettre fin au combat en prolongation, comme c’est arrivé pour Laurence », a précisé Bouchard.

Même si son résultat du jour est en deçà de ses attentes, Biron se dit encouragée par son retour qui semble s’effectuer en douceur après une sérieuse blessure, elle qui a subi une déchirure complète de deux des trois tendons de l’ischio-jambier de sa jambe gauche.

« Je regarde les points positifs, après ma blessure, je ne savais pas si j’allais pouvoir remonter sur les tatamis de combat un jour. De ce côté-là, c’est un gros soulagement. Je me sentais super bien et en forme. Même si mes deux combats se sont rendus en temps supplémentaire, j’étais capable de rester lucide. J’ai retrouvé des sensations et des repères mentaux », a raconté Laurence Biron.

Également en action du côté féminin, Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) a bénéficié d’un laissez-passer au premier tour avant de s’incliner face à la Française Kaila Issoufi après avoir reçu trois pénalités.

Du côté masculin, Daniil Kremerman (-66 kg) a remporté son premier combat face à l’Italien Ciro De Luca avant de retrouver l’Espagnol Adrian Nieto Chinarro au tour suivant.

Face à un adversaire en contrôle, Kremerman a été pénalisé à trois reprises dans les deux premières minutes du combat, cédant ainsi la victoire à l’Espagnol.

« Le premier combat de Daniil a été très serré, mais il a réussi à aller chercher deux yukos pour l’emporter. Malheureusement, à son deuxième combat, il a pris trois pénalités. Il n’a pas réussi à s’adapter à son adversaire qui lançait énormément d’attaques. Il vient chercher de l’expérience et ce sera bénéfique pour la suite », a indiqué Antoine Bouchard.

Dans la même catégorie, Luka Tsatsalashvili a baissé pavillon d’entrée de jeu face à l’Allemand David Ickes.

Tylor Collin (-60 kg) a subi un sort similaire à celui de Coralie Godbout, subissant la défaite au deuxième tour après avoir reçu un laissez-passer en début de journée. Il a été défait par l’Israélien Roie Rosen.

Félix Mercier-Ross, Frédéric De Cardaillac et Yanis Hachemi, eux qui étaient de la partie chez les moins de 73 kg, ont tous perdu leur premier combat.

L’Open européen de Ljubljana reprendra dimanche. Arthur Margelidon, Keagan Young, David Popovici et Olivier Gagnon seront en action chez les moins de 81 kg, alors que Guillaume Gaulin combattra chez les moins de 90 kg. Marie-Lune Turmel (-48 kg), Heidi Quach (-48 kg), Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) et Kelly Deguchi (-57 kg) seront aussi de la partie du côté féminin.

An Encouraging Comeback for Laurence Biron

Montréal, February 8, 2025 – Laurence Biron and Daniil Kremerman were the only two Canadians to win a match on Saturday at the Ljubljana European Open in Slovenia. However, both were eliminated in their second rounds.  

In the under-63 kg weight category, Biron fought two lengthy battles in the Slovenian capital. Her first-round bout against Switzerland’s Olivia Gertsch went into overtime, where the Québécoise prevailed when her opponent received a third penalty.

In her next round, she was up against Brigitta Varga of Hungary. Once again, extra time was required to decide the match. One minute into overtime, Biron, who already had two penalties, was caught off-guard by Varga, who scored a yuko to secure the win.

“Laurence had two long fights today. She’s just getting back from an injury, so she hasn’t competed in a tournament since last June. She didn’t do badly at all. Against the Hungarian, it ended on a pretty equivocal point, but for a comeback, she did very well. It’s encouraging,” said Canadian coach Antoine Bouchard.

“The yuko is a new score that was just recently introduced. It’s lower than a waza-ari, and you can score an unlimited number of them during regulation time, but they can allow you to win after four minutes. And of course, they can put an end to overtime, which is what happened in Laurence’s match,” explained Bouchard.

Although today’s results didn’t quite meet her expectations, Biron said she is heartened by her comeback, which appears to be going smoothly following a serious injury that left her with two of the three hamstring tendons in her left leg completely torn.

“I’m focusing on the positive. After my injury, I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to compete again. So in that sense, it’s a huge relief. I felt really good and strong, and even though both my bouts went into overtime, I was able to keep my wits about me. I’ve still got my senses and my mental bearings,” said Biron.

Also in the women’s competition, Coralie Godbout (-78 kg), who received a first-round bye, bowed out to Kaila Issoufi of France after receiving three penalties in her first match of the day.

On the men’s side, Daniil Kremerman (-66 kg) defeated Italy’s Ciro De Luca before facing Spain’s Adrian Nieto Chinarro in the next round. With his opponent in complete control, Kremerman was penalized three times in the first two minutes of the bout, conceding victory to Nieto Chinarro.

“Daniil’s first fight was very close, but he managed to win with two yukos. Unfortunately, in his second bout, he received three penalties. He wasn’t able to adjust to his opponent, who launched numerous attacks. But he’s here to gain experience, and this will help him in the future,” said Bouchard.

In the same weight division, Luka Tsatsalashvili lost his first and only bout to David Ickes of Germany.

Tylor Collin (-60 kg) met a similar fate to that of Coralie Godbout, bowing out in the second round after receiving a bye at the beginning of the day. He lost to Roie Rosen of Israel.

In the under-73 kg bracket, Félix Mercier-Ross, Frédéric De Cardaillac, and Yanis Hachemi lost their first and only bouts of the day.

The Ljubljana European Open will continue on Sunday. On the men’s side, Arthur Margelidon, Keagan Young, David Popovici, and Olivier Gagnon will be in action in the under-81 kg category, while Guillaume Gaulin competes in the under-90 kg group. Marie-Lune Turmel (-48 kg), Heidi Quach (-48 kg), Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg), and Kelly Deguchi (-57 kg) will hit the tatamis in the women’s competition.
