Montréal, 25 octobre 2023 – Après avoir vu sa compatriote Jessica Klimkait remporter les grands honneurs la veille chez les moins de 57 kg, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard semblait avoir des ailes mercredi sur les tatamis du Grand Chelem d’Abou Dabi, aux Émirats arabes unis. La médaillée de bronze des Jeux olympiques de Tokyo a survolé la compétition des moins de 63 kg, en route vers la plus haute marche du podium.
En finale, Beauchemin-Pinard a rapidement pris l’avantage de son duel face à la Chinoise Jing Tang. Après un peu plus de deux minutes de combat, la Québécoise a mis un point d’exclamation sur sa journée en projetant son adversaire au sol avec un ura nage.
« Mes dernières compétitions n’avaient pas été à la hauteur de mes attentes. Ce résultat fait vraiment du bien au moral. C’est bien de savoir que je suis toujours dans la game ! Je voulais finir en beauté, je savais que ce combat était accessible. Avant le duel, je me suis dit que j’allais tout donner et que je n’allais pas lui laisser de chance », a lancé Beauchemin-Pinard.
Sa dernière victoire en Grand Chelem remontait à février dernier alors qu’elle s’était imposée en finale à Tel-Aviv.
La réaction de Beauchemin-Pinard a été immédiate ! Agenouillée au milieu du tatami, elle a brandi les deux poings dans les airs avec un énorme sourire aux lèvres.
« J’étais tellement heureuse immédiatement après ma victoire. Je n’ai pas seulement gagné, je l’ai fait avec un gros ippon. Je me sentais forte ! » a ajouté la médaillée d’or.
Plus tôt dans la journée, l’athlète de 29 ans a profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour avant de défaire la Française Gaëtane Deberdt lors de son premier affrontement de la journée. Beauchemin-Pinard a ensuite assuré sa place dans le carré d’as en l’emportant de manière décisive face à l’Autrichienne Magdalena Krssakova.
Elle a finalement obtenu son billet pour la finale grâce à sa victoire en demi-finale contre Lubjana Piovesana, elle aussi de l’Autriche.
« Je pense que ma préparation mentale a fait une grande différence. J’ai avancé dans la journée un combat à la fois sans penser trop loin. Je restais vraiment dans le moment présent », a-t-elle expliqué.
En action dans le tableau des moins de 81 kg, François Gauthier-Drapeau a été limité à un seul combat à Abou Dabi après s’être avoué vaincu face à l’Ouzbek Nurbek Murtozoev.
Jeudi, Louis Krieber-Gagnon (-90 kg), Shady ElNahas (-100 kg) et Kyle Reyes (-100 kg) seront les trois Canadiens en action lors de la dernière journée d’activité au Grand Chelem d’Abou Dabi.

Another Gold Medal for Canada in Abu Dhabi
Montréal, October 25, 2023 – After watching her compatriot Jessica Klimkait take top honours yesterday in the under-57 kg weight category, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard appeared to have the wind in her sails on Wednesday at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam in the United Arab Emirates. The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist glided through the competition on her way to the top of the podium in the under-63 kg weight division.
In the final, Beauchemin-Pinard quickly claimed the lead over Jing Tang of China. Just over two minutes into the match, the Québécoise capped off her day by throwing her opponent to the ground with an ura-nage.
“My last few competitions haven’t been up to my expectations. Today’s result is a real morale booster. It’s good to know I’m still in the game! I wanted to finish on a high note, and I knew I could win this match. Before it started, I told myself I was going to give it everything I had, and I wouldn’t even give her a chance,” said Beauchemin-Pinard.
Her most recent Grand Slam victory was in Tel Aviv in February.
Beauchemin-Pinard’s reaction to her win today was instantaneous. On her knees in the middle of the tatami, she raised both fists into the air with a huge smile on her face.
“I was so happy right after my win. Not only did I win, but I did it with a huge ippon. I felt powerful!” added the gold medallist.
Earlier on Wednesday, the 29-year-old athlete had received a first-round bye. She then defeated Gaëtane Deberdt of France in her first bout of the day. Next, she secured her spot in the final four with a decisive win over Magdalena Krssakova of Austria.
Her victory over Austria’s Lubjana Piovesana in the semi-final secured her spot in the final.
“I think my mental preparation made a big difference. I took the day one bout at a time, without thinking ahead too much. I really stayed focused on the present,” she explained.
In the under-81 kg division, François Gauthier-Drapeau lost his first and only fight in Abu Dhabi to Nurbek Murtozoev of Uzbekistan.
On Thursday, Canadians Louis Krieber-Gagnon (-90 kg), Shady ElNahas (-100 kg) and Kyle Reyes (-100 kg) will hit the tatamis on the final day of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam.
