Montréal, 8 septembre 2022 – Trois grandes finales, trois finales de bronze et un total de cinq athlètes médaillés ! Le Canada a fait belle figure à la Coupe panaméricaine junior disputée à Saint-Domingue, jeudi, en République dominicaine.

Yanis Hachemi (-66 kg) et Eibhleann Alexander (-57 kg) ont été les deux grandes vedettes canadiennes de la journée, terminant la compétition sur la plus haute marche du podium dans leur catégorie respective.

En finale, Hachemi a disposé du Cubain Kimy Bravo Blanco en moins de 30 secondes pour remporter les grands honneurs de la compétition. Une victoire qui a fait plaisir à l’entraîneur Sasha Mehmedovic.

« Yanis a été au sommet de son art aujourd’hui. En finale, il a battu le Cubain qui a été médaillé de bronze aux plus récents Championnats du monde juniors. Il a réalisé un superbe ippon pour filer vers la victoire », s’est réjoui l’entraîneur à propos du Québécois.

De son côté, l’Ontarienne Eibhleann Alexander a défait Clara Barinas Benitez de manière convaincante lors de la finale pour la médaille d’or chez les moins de 57 kg.

« Elle a gagné extrêmement facilement en finale. Comme Yanis, elle a projeté son adversaire au sol avec force. Elle a été la meilleure et il n’y a aucun doute là-dessus, a mentionné Mehmedovic.

Munkhjin Batdorj (-73 kg) a eu moins de chance lors de sa finale alors qu’il a été défait par le Dominicain Antony Matos qui a remporté la médaille d’or devant ses partisans. Le Québécois termine tout de même l’événement avec une médaille d’argent bien mérité autour du cou.

« Je suis très fier de mes athlètes. La majorité d’entre eux ont eu un cheminement difficile en raison de la COVID-19. Le but était de participer aux plus grands nombres de combats possible et c’est évidemment mission accomplie. Les dernières compétitions n’ont pas toujours été faciles et ça fait du bien de connaître du succès », a reconnu Sasha Mehmedovic.

Deux autres athlètes du pays ont terminé la journée avec une médaille, Daniel McCristall (-66 kg, Ontario) a défait le Colombien Santiago Villada lors de son ultime combat pour se mériter une médaille de bronze. Puis, Laurence Biron (-70 kg, Québec) a elle aussi terminé sur la troisième marche du podium après sa victoire contre Bellanira Lachapelle.

Le Britanno-Colombien Gunner Floyd a quant à lui terminé la journée en cinquième place chez les moins de 73 kg.

Les athlètes canadiens demeureront en République dominicaine pour la fin de semaine afin de prendre part à l’Open panaméricain de Saint-Domingue samedi et dimanche.

Banner Day for Canada’s Judokas

Montréal, September 8, 2022 – Three grand finals, three bronze medal finals and a total of five medals! The Canadians made a strong showing at the Pan-American Junior Cup in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on Thursday.

Yanis Hachemi (-66 kg) and Eibhleann Alexander (-57 kg) were the Canadian stars of the day, clinching the top spot on the podium in their respective weight divisions.

In his gold medal final, Hachemi needed only thirty seconds to dispose of Cuba’s Kimy Bravo Blanco and claim the highest honours. Coach Sasha Mehmedovic was very pleased with the Quebecois’ win.

“Yanis was really on top of his game today. In the final, he beat the Cuban who won bronze at the most recent Junior World Championships. Yanis performed a perfect ippon to win the match,” he enthused.

In the under-57 kg final, Ontario’s Eibhleann Alexander soundly defeated Clara Barinas Benitez of the Dominican Republic to secure the gold medal.

“She won the final very easily. Like Yanis, she forcefully threw her opponent to the ground. She was the best one out there, there’s no doubt about that,” stated Mehmedovic.

Munkhjin Batdorj did not fare quite as well in the under-73 kg final, where he lost to Dominican Antony Matos, who captured the gold medal in front of a hometown crowd. Quebec’s Batdorj nevertheless finished the event with a well-earned silver medal around his neck.

“I’m very proud of my athletes. Most of them have had a tough time because of Covid-19. Our goal was to compete in as many bouts as possible, and we definitely accomplished that. The last few competitions haven’t been easy, so it feels good to achieve some success,” noted Mehmedovic.

Two other Canadians won medals today. Daniel McCristall (-66 kg, Ontario) defeated Santiago Villada of Colombia in his final match for bronze, and Laurence Biron (-70 kg, Quebec) climbed to the third step of the podium after vanquishing Bellanira Lachapelle of Dominican Republic.

Gunner Floyd of British Columbia finished fifth in the under-73 kg category.

The Canadians will remain in the Dominican Republic for the weekend to take part in the Santo Domingo Pan-American Open on Saturday and Sunday.
