Montréal, 4 août 2023 – Cinq combats, cinq victoires ! L’entraîneur canadien Antoine Valois-Fortier a décrit la journée de travail de Jessica Klimkait (-57 kg) comme étant tout simplement parfaite !L’Ontarienne n’a jamais été inquiétée lors de ses cinq duels au Tournoi des Maîtres disputé à Budapest, en Hongrie, vendredi, où elle est montée sur la plus haute marche du podium.

Klimkait a facilement remporté ses deux premiers duels de la journée devant la Bulgare Ivelina Ilieva puis contre la Britannique Lele Nairne pour se hisser en quart de finale. Malgré un affrontement âprement disputé face à la Française Priscilla Gneto, la Canadienne a réussi à l’emporter après plus de sept minutes de combats.

En demi-finale, Klimkait a été expéditive en ayant raison de l’Allemande Pauline Starke en 33 petites secondes pour obtenir son billet pour la finale contre la Française Sarah Leonie Cysique.

Comme ce fut le cas en quart de finale, l’affrontement s’est transporté en temps supplémentaire où Klimkait a vu une ouverture pour projeter la vice-championne olympique au sol afin de l’emporter.

« C’était une journée remarquable pour Jessica, probablement ce qui se rapproche le plus d’une journée parfaite. Elle a été excellente à tous les niveaux, elle a dominé toutes ses adversaires. Elle a donné le ton dès son premier combat et elle n’a jamais levé le pied de l’accélérateur jusqu’à sa victoire ultime », a commenté Antoine Valois-Fortier.

« En finale, on savait que la Française a un excellent physique et Jessica voulait utiliser sa vitesse et son dynamisme pour être capable d’en venir à bout. Elle a été agressive dès le départ et elle a été en mesure de marquer le point gagnant de cette manière aussi », a ajouté l’entraîneur canadien.

De son côté, Christa Deguchi, elle aussi chez les moins de 57 kg, a été défaite dès son premier combat de la journée face à la Portugaise Telma Monteiro, subissant au passage une blessure à une côte. Kelly Deguchi (-52 kg) a elle aussi été limitée à un seul combat vendredi alors qu’elle a subi la défaite face à l’Italienne Odette Giuffrida.

Samedi, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg) et François Gauthier-Drapeau seront en action sur les tatamis de Budapest.

Quatre médailles d’argent aux Jeux de la Francophonie

Les judokas canadiens ont également fait bonne figure vendredi aux Jeux de la Francophonie à Kinshasa, en République démocratique du Congo. Les quatre représentants de l’unifolié qui étaient en action vendredi sont tous montés sur la deuxième marche du podium de leur catégorie respective.

Après avoir profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour, Laurence Biron (-70 kg) a commencé sa journée en force avec une victoire en 38 secondes face à Rosine Abeminachi Bodjrenou, du Bénin. Biron a poursuivi sa cavale au tour suivant avec une victoire dans un duel marathon devant la Camerounaise Zita Ornella Biami.

Le match pour la médaille d’or s’est lui aussi étiré en temps supplémentaire où Biron a finalement été vaincue par la Malgache Aina Laura Rasoanaivo Razafy après un autre duel qui a nécessité du temps supplémentaire.

« Laurence était tellement proche de la médaille d’or. Elle a eu de très longs matchs au cours de la journée, mais elle n’a jamais abandonné. Son adversaire était très solide et elle a réussi à trouver une brèche dans le travail de Laurence pour l’emporter », a commenté l’entraîneur canadien Sasha Mehmedovic.

Tout comme Biron, Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) a reçu un laissez-passer avant de se rendre en quart de finale où elle a vaincu la Roumaine Denisa Marin. Elle a ensuite eu raison de la Burundaise Ange Ciella Niragira pour obtenir sa place en finale. Godbout a finalement baissé pavillon dans le duel pour la médaille d’or face à la Française Laury Ngelebeya Liz.

Du côté masculin, Alexandre Arencibia (-90 kg) a remporté ses deux premiers duels de la journée face au Tchadien Pierre Djonwe et au Camerounais Vladimir Carlos Ngueya Naheu. En finale, c’est le Roumain Alexandru Sibisan qui aura eu raison d’Arencibia au terme d’un duel qui s’est soldé en prolongation.

« Alexandre connaissait un excellent duel en finale où il respectait le plan de match à la lettre. Il est lui aussi passé bien près de l’emporter. La lutte était chaude entre lui et le Roumain qui a finalement réussi à prendre l’avantage. Alexandre peut toutefois être fier de lui, c’était une très belle journée de son côté », a remarqué l’entraîneur Mehmedovic.

Finalement, chez les plus de 100 kg, John Jr Messé A Bessong a lui aussi été parfait jusqu’à la grande finale en battant coup sur coup le Mauricien Joseph Hansley Begue, le Marocain Mohammed Lahboub et le Congolais Hardel Samba.

Messé A Bessong a toutefois baissé pavillon lors du duel ultime devant le Français Khamzat Sparbaev, le privant ainsi de monter sur la plus haute marche du podium.

« Laurence, Coralie, Alexandre et John ont tous amorcé la journée de belle façon pour se rendre jusqu’en finale. On souhaitait évidemment remporter quelques médailles d’or. C’est une fin de journée un peu étrange, mais ça demeure une excellente journée pour nos athlètes qui finissent tous avec la médaille d’argent », a soutenu Mehmedovic.

Le Canada quitte donc Kinshasa avec une récolte de neuf médailles, le plus haut total parmi tous les pays inscrits à la compétition. Julien Frascadore et David Popovici ont procuré les deux médailles d’or au pays.

Picture Perfect Day for Jessica Klimkait

Montréal, August 4, 2023 – Five bouts, five wins! Team Canada Coach Antoine Valois-Fortier was enthusiastic about Jessica Klimkait’s (-57 kg) picture perfect day. The Ontario native never had a care in the world during any of the five times she stepped onto the tatami at the Masters Tournament in Budapest (Hungary) Friday, where she proudly stepped up to the top of the podium.

Klimkait easily won her first two duels against Bulgaria’s Ivelina Ilieva and then Britain’s Lele Nairne; the wins got the Canadian into the quarter finals. Despite a tricky battle against France’s Priscilla Gneto, Klimkait won after more than seven minutes of judo action.

In the semi-finals, Klimkait got the better of Germany’s Pauline Starke, and only took a mere 33 seconds to finalize her passage into the final against France’s Sarah Leonie Cysique.

As was the case in the quarter-finals, the bout went into overtime, and when Klimkait saw an opening to throw the Olympic vice-champion to the floor for the win, she took it.

« It was a remarkable day for Jessica, probably the closest thing to a perfect day. She was excellent in every way, dominating all of her opponents. She set the tone from her first fight and never took her foot off the gas until her ultimate victory, » commented Coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.

« In the final, we knew that the French judoka had excellent physical skills, and Jessica wanted to use her speed and dynamism to be able to overcome her. She was aggressive from the very start and was able to score the winning point that way too, » added the Canadian coach.

For her part, Christa Deguchi – also in the Under 57kg category – was defeated in her first bout of the day by Portugal’s Telma Monteiro, suffering a rib injury in the process. Kelly Deguchi (-52 kg) was also limited to a single bout on Friday, losing to Italy’s Odette Giuffrida.

Saturday, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg) and François Gauthier-Drapeau will be in action on the tatamis in Budapest.

Four amazing silver medals at the Jeux de la Francophonie

Canadian judokas also performed well on Friday at the Jeux de la Francophonie in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. The four Canadians on the tatami there all finished on the second step of the podium in each of their respective categories.

After receiving a bye in the first round, Laurence Biron (-70 kg) started the day off strong with a 38-second win over Rosine Abeminachi Bodjrenou (Benin). Biron continued her run into the next round, winning in a marathon duel against Cameroon’s Zita Ornella Biami.

The gold medal match also went into overtime, when Biron was finally defeated by Madagascar’s Aina Laura Rasoanaivo Razafy after another duel that required extra time to determine a winner.

« Laurence was so close to the gold medal! She had some very long matches today, but she never gave up. Her last opponent was very good, and managed to find a gap in Laurence’s armour to win, » commented Canadian coach Sasha Mehmedovic.

Like Biron, Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) received a bye before reaching the quarter-finals on her own terms, where she defeated Romania’s Denisa Marin. She then overcame Burundi’s Ange Ciella Niragira to claim a place in the final. Godbout finally lost out to France’s Laury Ngelebeya Liz in the gold medal duel.

In men’s judo action, Alexandre Arencibia (-90 kg) won his first two duels of the day against Chad’s Pierre Djonwe and Cameroon’s Vladimir Carlos Ngueya Naheu. In the final, Romanian Alexandru Sibisan got the better of Arencibia in a duel that went into extra time.

« Alexandre had an excellent bout in the final where he followed his game plan to the letter, and came very close to winning. The battle was intense between he and the Romanian, who finally managed to take the lead. Alexandre can be proud of himself though, it was a great day for him, » remarked coach Mehmedovic.

Finally, in the Over 100kg category, John Jr Messé A Bessong also made it all the way to the grand final, beating Mauritian judoka Joseph Hansley Begue, Morocco’s Mohammed Lahboub, and Hardel Samba of Congo in back-to-back bouts.

However, Messé A Bessong fell to France’s Khamzat Sparbaev in the final match, depriving him of the top spot on the podium.

« Laurence, Coralie, Alexandre, and John all got off to a good start and all made it through to the finals. We obviously wanted to win a few gold medals; in the end it was a bit of a strange day, but also still an excellent day for our athletes, who all finished with silver medals, » noted Mehmedovic.

Canadian judokas will leave Kinshasa with a total of nine medals weighing down their luggage – the highest total of any country in the competition. Julien Frascadore and David Popovici took home two gold medals for Canada.
