Bolzano, 16 juillet 2022 – La lutte était très chaude en finale à la plateforme de 10 m chez les femmes à l’Invitation Bolzano, en Italie. La Canadienne Kate Miller (Ottawa, Ont) a finalement réussi à sortir du lot lors de ses deux derniers sauts pour se hisser sur la deuxième marche du podium et remporter par le fait même sa première médaille internationale chez les seniors.

« Je suis vraiment fière de moi. C’est tellement plaisir de se retrouver sur le podium lors d’une compétition internationale. C’est tout un accomplissement ! Je ne voulais pas me mettre de pression même si j’étais la plus jeune, je voulais profiter de l’expérience et finalement ça s’est encore mieux passé que ce que j’espérais », a indiqué Kate Miller.

La plongeuse de 17 ans a connu des difficultés à son troisième plongeon, n’obtenant que 28,80 points, mais elle s’est reprise de belle façon dès le tour suivant avec une note de 70,95. L’Ontarienne a maintenu la cadence à sa dernière entrée à l’eau pour finir la journée avec 277,55 points.

« Après mon mauvais saut, je voulais recommencer à zéro, me concentrer sur mes deux derniers plongeons et ç’a été extrêmement payant. C’est fou à quel point c’était serré pour le podium et c’est encore plus spécial de finir avec une médaille dans ces circonstances », a ajouté Miller.

Seulement 0,45 point a séparé la première de la quatrième place lors de la finale. L’Écossaise Gemma McArthur l’a emporté avec 277,65 points. Au troisième rang, l’Irlandaise Tanya Wilson (277,25) n’a accusé un retard que de 0,30 point sur Miller. L’Italienne Maia Biginelli a terminé en quatrième place, à 0,05 point du podium.

Tatiana Conn (Calgary, Alb) a de son côté pris le septième rang de la finale avec ses 205 points. Quant à Elaena Dick (Edmonton, Alb), elle a vu son parcours prendre fin lors des qualifications en début de journée.

L’amitié amène Ware et Wilson sur la plus haute marche du podium

Après avoir remporté la médaille de bronze la veille au 3 m en individuel, Pamela Ware (Montréal, Qc) faisait équipe avec son amie Aimee Wilson (Calgary, Alb) au 3 m synchronisé. Seulement deux équipes étaient inscrites à l’épreuve et les Canadiennes ont réussi leur objectif de remporter la médaille d’or.

« Nous sommes très contentes de notre médaille d’or. Nous sommes conscientes qu’il y a encore des petites choses à travailler sur notre performance. Pamela et moi sommes de très bonnes amies dans la vie de tous les jours et ça se transpose clairement dans nos performances en synchro », a expliqué Wilson.

La paire canadienne n’a jamais véritablement été inquiétée lors de cette finale alors que le duo norvégien a connu toutes sortes de difficultés au cours de la journée, n’obtenant d’ailleurs pas de points lors de leur troisième saut.

Seul représentant de l’unifolié en finale au tremplin 3 m chez les hommes, Laurent Gosselin-Paradis (Montréal, Qc) a pris le septième rang de la compétition avec son total de 335,80 points. C’est l’Italien Giovanni Tocci (416,00) qui s’est imposé pour l’emporter.

L’Invitation de Bolzano se termine dimanche et plusieurs athlètes canadiens tenteront de se retrouver sur le podium pour finir leur fin de semaine de compétition en beauté.

A Very Special Silver Medal for Kate Miller

Bolzano, July 16, 2022 – The battle was fierce in the women’s 10-metre platform final at the Bolzano Invitational in Italy on Saturday. However, Canada’s Kate Miller (Ottawa, ON) managed to pull ahead of the pack with her last two dives, finishing on the second step of the podium and earning her first senior-level international medal, to boot.

“I’m really proud of myself. It feels so great to be back on the podium at an international competition. It’s a big accomplishment! Even though I was the youngest diver, I didn’t want to put any pressure on myself. I just wanted to enjoy the experience, but things went even better than expected,” said Miller.

The 17-year-old struggled on her third dive, earning only 28.80 points, but she bounced back in the next round with a score of 70.95. The Ontarian maintained her momentum into her final dive, finishing with a total of 277.55 points.

“After my bad jump, I wanted to start fresh and focus on my two final dives. It worked! It’s crazy how tight the race to the podium was, so the medal feels even more special,” she added.

In the final, a mere 0.45 points separated the first and fourth place divers. Gemma McArthur of Scotland won gold with 277.65 points. In third place, Ireland’s Tanya Wilson (277.25) was only 0.30 points behind Miller. Italy’s Maia Biginelli finished fourth, only 0.05 points away from the podium.

Tatiana Conn (Calgary, AB) finished seventh with a score of 205.00. Earlier in the day, Elaena Dick (Edmonton, AB) was eliminated in the qualifying rounds.

Friendship leads Ware and Wilson to top of podium

After winning the bronze medal yesterday in the individual 3-metre event, Pamela Ware (Montréal, QC) teamed up with her friend Aimee Wilson (Calgary, AB) in the synchronized 3m competition. Only two teams were entered in the event, and the Canadians achieved their goal of winning gold.

“We’re really happy with our gold medal. We know we still have a few things to work on in our performance. Pamela and I are very good friends outside of diving, and that shines through in our synchronized performances,” explained Wilson.

The Canadian duo was never in any danger in the final. The Norwegian team had experienced several difficulties throughout the day, failing to earn any points on their third jump.

Laurent Gosselin-Paradis (Montreal, QC) was the only Canadian in the men’s 3m final. He finished seventh with 335.80 points. Italy’s Giovanni Tocci won the event with 416.00.

The Bolzano Invitational will come to a close on Sunday. Several Canadians will vie for a spot on the podium, hoping to end their weekend on a high note.
