Montréal, 6 août 2023 – Kyle Reyes avait du pain sur la planche dimanche lors de la dernière journée de compétition au Tournoi des Maîtres disputé à Budapest, en Hongrie. Dans la catégorie des 100 kg, le Canadien savait qu’il allait devoir vaincre des adversaires de qualité s’il souhaitait aspirer à une place sur le podium. Reyes a réussi le défi haut la main, terminant sa journée avec une médaille de bronze autour du cou.

L’athlète de 29 ans avait d’abord rendez-vous avec le Brésilien Rafael Buzacarini qu’il a vaincu grâce à deux waza-aris. La tâche s’annonçait encore relevée au tour suivant où il allait affronter le Suisse Daniel Eich. Reyes a réussi un waza-ari au cours des quatre minutes de l’affrontement pour obtenir sa place en quart de finale.

L’Israélien Peter Paltchik, médaillé de bronze aux plus récents Championnats du monde, a finalement eu raison de Reyes après un combat technique qui s’est soldé en temps supplémentaire. Reyes a reçu trois pénalités, ce qui a mené à sa défaite.

« Kyle a fait face à deux adversaires de taille lors de ses deux premiers combats. Contre l’Israélien, ç’a été un combat extrêmement tactique qui aurait pu basculer d’un côté ou de l’autre », a commenté l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Valois-Fortier.

Au repêchage, le Belge Toma Nikiforov, qui devait affronter Reyes, a dû déclarer forfait en raison d’une blessure, ce qui a envoyé le Canadien directement dans un duel pour une médaille de bronze face au Serbe Bojan Dosen.

Reyes n’a pas semblé affecté par sa défaite en quart de finale alors qu’il a offert un excellent combat dans cet ultime duel. Quelques secondes après le début de la prolongation, il a vu une ouverture et a réussi à projeter son adversaire au sol pour concrétiser sa place sur le podium.

« Le Serbe a connu l’une de ses meilleures journées en carrière. Le combat était assez serré, mais Kyle a toujours été en contrôle et il a marqué rapidement au début de la prolongation. Il avait une bonne attitude malgré sa défaite, il a tourné la page rapidement et ça lui a permis de mettre la main sur le bronze », a ajouté Valois-Fortier.

De retour d’une blessure, Shady ElNahas était lui aussi en action dans la même catégorie que Reyes. Ayant lui aussi reçu un tirage au sort difficile, ElNahas a commencé sa journée en force avec une victoire face à l’Italien Gennaro Pirelli.

La journée de travail d’ElNahas a toutefois pris fin au tour suivant où il a été défait par l’éventuel médaillé d’or de la compétition, Muzzafarbek Turoboyev de l’Ouzbékistan.

« C’était une grosse victoire pour Shady au premier tour contre l’Italien qui l’avait battu dans le passé. Il s’est bien battu ensuite par l’Ouzbek était en grande forme aujourd’hui (dimanche). Shady s’est blessé aux Championnats du monde et ç’a joué dans sa préparation pour le Tournoi des Maîtres. C’est un pas dans la bonne direction », a conclu l’entraîneur.

A bronze medal reward after a big day on the tatami

Montréal, August 6, 2023 – Kyle Reyes had his work cut out for him Sunday, the final day of the Masters Tournament in Budapest, Hungary. In the 100kg category, the Canadian knew he’d have to overcome some stiff competition if he wanted to grab a spot on the podium. In the end, Reyes rose to the challenge with flying colors, ending the day with a bronze medal around his neck.

The 29-year-old first had a date on the tatami with Brazil’s Rafael Buzacarini, whom he defeated with two waza-aris. In the next round, he faced Switzerland’s Daniel Eich; Reyes scored a waza-ari in the four-minute bout to secure his place in the quarter-finals.

Israel’s Peter Paltchik – bronze medallist at the most recent World Championships – finally snagged Reyes’ upward momentum after a technical bout that went into overtime. Reyes received three penalties, leading to his defeat.

« Kyle faced two tough opponents in his first two bouts. As for the bout with the Israeli judoka, it was an extremely tactical fight that could have gone either way, » commented Canadian Coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.

At the repechage Belgium’s Toma Nikiforov was due to face Reyes, but had to withdraw due to injury which sent the Canadian straight into a bronze-medal duel against Serbia’s Bojan Dosen.

Reyes took his quarter-final defeat in stride, and put up an excellent fight in this final duel. Seconds after the start of extra time, he saw an opening and threw his opponent to the ground to secure his place on the podium.

« Dosen (the Serbian judoka) had one of the best days of his career! The bout was pretty close, but Kyle was always in control and scored quickly at the start of overtime. He had a good attitude despite his defeat, and turned the page quickly; that enabled him to get his hands on bronze, » added Valois-Fortier.

Coming back from injury, Shady ElNahas was also in action in the same category as Reyes. EINahas also received a difficult draw, but started his day off with vim and a win over Italy’s Gennaro Pirelli.

ElNahas’ day came to an end in the next round, however, when he was defeated by the competition’s eventual gold medallist, Muzzafarbek Turoboyev (Uzbekistan).

« Shady had a really big win in the first round against the Italian who’d beaten him in the past. He fought well afterwards because the Uzbek was in great form today (Sunday). Shady was injured at the World Championships and that played a part in his preparation for the Masters Tournament. All in all, it’s a step in the right direction, » concluded the coach.
