Montréal, 10 mai 2024 – Christa Deguchi a été parfaite en cinq duels au Grand Chelem d’Almaty, au Kazakhstan, en route vers la médaille d’or des moins de 57 kg. L’athlète de 28 ans a couronné sa journée de vendredi en l’emportant en grande finale face à la Brésilienne Rafaela Silva, qui a reçu trois shidos durant l’affrontement.

Deguchi s’était avouée vaincue devant cette même Silva à la fin du mois d’avril, en finale des Championnats panaméricains et de l’Océanie. Un face-à-face qui avait duré plus de 9 minutes. La Canadienne a eu droit à sa revanche à Almaty.

« Christa a fait un très bon combat, elle et la Brésilienne se rencontrent souvent et je pense que Christa était bien heureuse de l’emporter cette fois-ci. Elle a été très dominante et ç’a forcé son adversaire à devoir tricher un peu plus, ce qui a causé les pénalités. Christa avait un bon positionnement, elle plaçait bien ses mains et elle a fait les bonnes attaques au bon moment », a commenté l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Valois-Fortier.

Ce duel face à Rafaela Silva était également très intéressant pour Deguchi dans sa préparation pour les Championnats du monde et pour les Jeux olympiques de Paris. La Brésilienne occupe actuellement le septième rang mondial chez les moins de 57 kg, alors que la Canadienne trône au sommet de la catégorie, tout juste devant sa compatriote Jessica Klimkait.

« Je pense que c’est de bon augure de la voir aussi en confiance et être aussi dominante, à quelques jours des mondiaux et à quelques semaines des Jeux. Elle a affronté de bonnes athlètes et elle est prête pour les prochains défis », a ajouté Valois-Fortier.

Il s’agit d’une deuxième médaille d’or de suite en Grand Chelem pour Christa Deguchi, elle qui avait également été couronnée à Antalya, en Turquie, en mars.

Afin d’obtenir son billet pour la finale, la médaillée d’or a eu le dessus sur la Japonaise Haruka Funakubo en demi-finale. Comme ce fut le cas face à Silva, elle a gagné après que son opposante ait été pénalisée à trois reprises.

L’Albertaine avait également vaincu coup sur coup la Turque Ozlem Yildiz, la Finlandaise Pihla Salonen ainsi que Maysa Pardayeva, du Turkménistan, pour amorcer son tournoi.

Chez les moins de 52 kg, Kelly Deguchi a été limitée à un seul combat vendredi, s’inclinant au premier tour devant la Portugaise Maria Siderot, cinquième au terme de la compétition.

Du côté masculin, Julien Frascadore (-66 kg) a remis une fiche d’une victoire et une défaite, comme il l’avait fait au Grand Chelem de Douchanbé, une semaine plus tôt. Cette fois, le Québécois a été victorieux à son premier duel de la journée devant le Français Walide Khyar, avant de baisser pavillon au tour suivant contre Kamran Suleymanov, de l’Azerbaïdjan, éventuel médaillé de bronze.

« Le Français est un médaillé des derniers Championnats du monde, je pense que ç’a été l’une des plus belles victoires de la carrière de Julien ! Malheureusement, il s’est fait pincer au tour suivant, il avait bien commencé, mais l’Azéri a été opportuniste pour marquer un ippon », a conclu l’entraîneur.

Le Grand Chelem d’Almaty se poursuivra jusqu’à dimanche, mais aucun Canadien n’est inscrit dans les autres catégories au programme ce week-end. L’équipe canadienne se tournera plutôt vers les Championnats du monde, prévus du 19 au 24 mai.

Gold Medal Bodes Well for World Championships

Montréal, May 10, 2024 – On her way to winning the gold medal in the under-57 kg category today, Christa Deguchi was perfect in all five of her bouts at the Almaty Grand Slam in Kazakhstan. The 28-year-old capped her day off on Friday with a victory in the big final over Brazil’s Rafaela Silva, who received three shidos during the clash.

In late April, Deguchi lost to the same Silva in the final of the Pan-American and Oceania Championships, in a match that lasted over nine minutes. But today in Almaty, the Canadian exacted her revenge.

“Christa fought very well. She and the Brazilian often compete against each other, and I think Christa is very happy to have won this time. She was very dominant, which forced her opponent to cheat a bit, and therefore receive those penalties. Christa’s stance was great, her hand placement was very good, and she attacked at the right times,” explained Canadian coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.

For Deguchi, the match against Silva also held particular significance, as she is currently preparing for the World Championships and the Paris Olympics. Silva currently sits in seventh place in the under-57 kg world rankings, while the Canadian holds the top spot, just ahead of her compatriot Jessica Klimkait.

“I think the fact that she’s looking so confident and dominant just a few days ahead of the Worlds, and a few weeks from the Olympics, is a great sign. She’s fought some tough athletes, and she’s ready for her next challenges,” added Valois-Fortier.

This was the second consecutive Grand Slam gold medal for Christa Deguchi, who also won in Antalya, Turkey, in March.

To secure her spot in today’s final, Deguchi defeated Haruka Funakubo of Japan in the semi-final. Just as with Silva, she won after her opponent received three penalties.

Earlier in the tournament, the Albertan had ousted Ozlem Yildiz of Turkey, Pihla Salonen of Finland, and Maysa Pardayeva of Turkmenistan in back-to-back bouts.

In the under-52 kg weight division, Kelly Deguchi was limited to one match on Friday, which she lost to Maria Siderot of Portugal, who finished the tournament in fifth place.

On the men’s side, Julien Frascadore (-66 kg) ended the day with a record of one win and one loss, just as he did at the Dushanbe Grand Slam last week. This time, the Québécois edged out Walide Khyar of France in his first bout of the day, before bowing out to Kamran Suleymanov of Azerbaijan, who later won a bronze medal.

“[Khyar] won a medal at the most recent World Championships, so I think this was one of the sweetest victories of Julien’s career! But unfortunately, he was knocked out in the next round. It started well, but [Suleymanov] took an opportunity to score an ippon,” concluded the coach.

The Almaty Grand Slam will continue until Sunday, but no other Canadians are registered to compete there this weekend. The Canadian team will be back in action at the World Championships, from May 19 to 24.
