Montréal, 22 juillet 2023 – Médaillée d’argent ! C’est avec ce titre que la judoka Isabelle Harris est montée sur le podium de l’Open panaméricain disputé à Lima, samedi, au Pérou.
En action chez les moins de 63 kg, Harris a participé à une première finale cette année. Samedi, elle a plié l’échine devant une adversaire de taille en la Mexicaine Prisca Awiti Alcaraz, médaillée d’argent au Grand Chelem de Tachkent au printemps.
« J’étais très heureuse de prendre part à la finale. Malheureusement, je n’ai pas réussi à terminer avec l’or, mais je suis tout de même contente d’une médaille d’argent », a partagé Isabelle Harris au terme de la compétition.
La Britanno-Colombienne a vaincu la Péruvienne Ariana Cornejo et la Chilienne Constanza Perez afin de se frayer un chemin jusqu’au face-à-face ultime. En plus de l’expérience acquis lors de ses trois combats, la médaille d’argent décrochée dans la capitale péruvienne a également permis à Isabelle Harris de se qualifier en vue des Jeux panaméricains prévus à Santiago, au Chili, cet automne.
« Ça s’est plutôt bien passé pour moi aujourd’hui ! Je pense que je me suis bien battue. C’est une belle expérience de combattre dans une finale à ce niveau et je connais mieux les aspects sur lesquels je dois travailler pour la suite », a ajouté celle qui avait obtenu le bronze à l’Open de Saint-Domingue, en avril dernier.
L’Albertaine Kiera Westlake, aussi des moins de 63 kg, a quant à elle combattu pour une médaille de bronze samedi, où elle a perdu contre Edith Ortiz, de l’Équateur.
Défaite à son premier combat par Constanza Perez, Westlake a fait face à Cornejo au repêchage, elle qui venait de perdre aux mains d’Isabelle Harris. Westlake l’a vaincue à son tour et a fini en cinquième place à la suite de sa défaite contre Ortiz.
Lemire et Frascadore cinquièmes
Deux autres Canadiens ont bouclé leur parcours au pied du podium de leur catégorie respective au Pérou.
Médaillé de bronze à l’Open panaméricain de Saint-Domingue et d’or à celui de Santiago, Justin Lemire est passé bien près de rafler une autre médaille à Lima. Opposé au Mexicain Gilberto Cardoso pour l’obtention d’une médaille de bronze, le Québécois a plutôt terminé cinquième des moins de 73 kg.
Lemire avait été défait par l’Argentin Toma Sosa à son premier duel du jour. Une fois arrivé au repêchage, il s’est repris en l’emportant devant le Péruvien Aldair Barthe Chirrinos.
Quelques minutes plus tard, Julien Frascadore a tenté de mettre la main sur une médaille dans le tableau des moins de 66 kg. Il a d’abord défait l’Américain Alejandra Menendez après avoir profité d’un laissez-passer en début de journée. Le Montréalais s’est ensuite incliné face au Péruvien Juan Postigos, ce qui l’a envoyé au repêchage.
Une victoire signée contre le Mexicain Robin Jara a précédé son revers subi face à Diego Calix, du Salvador, qui l’a privé d’une médaille de bronze.
Également en action dans cette catégorie, Adrian Shimabukuru a perdu son affrontement avec l’Argentin Joaquin Tovagliari. Tylor Collin (-60 kg) a aussi perdu son seul combat où il s’est mesuré au Péruvien Mateo Condor.
L’équipe canadienne sera représentée par six autres judokas dimanche en conclusion de l’Open panaméricain de Lima. Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) et Alexandria Lefort (-70 kg) seront à surveiller, tout comme David Popovici (-81 kg), Alexandre Arencibia (-90 kg), Keagan Young (-90 kg) et Benjamin Kendrick (-100 kg).

Medal and Pan-American Qualification for Isabelle Harris
Montréal, July 22, 2023 – Silver medallist! That was the title judoka Isabelle Harris was conferred as she stepped onto the podium at the Pan-American Open in Lima, Peru, on Saturday.
It was first gold medal final of the year for Harris, who competes in the under-63 kg weight category. In today’s battle for gold, she bowed out to a formidable opponent, Prisca Awiti Alcaraz of Mexico, who won the silver medal at the Tashkent Grand Slam this past spring.
“I was really happy to make it to the final. Unfortunately, I didn’t win gold, but I’m very happy with the silver medal,” said Harris, following the match.
The British Columbian defeated Ariana Cornejo of Peru and Constanza Perez of Chile to advance to the ultimate showdown. In addition to gaining experience in her three bouts, Harris also qualified for the Pan-American Games in Santiago, Chile, this fall, thanks to her silver medal.
“Things went really well for me today! I think I fought well. Competing in a final at this level was a great experience, and now I have a better idea of what to work on going forward,” added Harris, who won a bronze medal at the Santo Domingo Open last April.
Alberta’s Kiera Westlake, who also competes in the under-63 kg division, was in the running for a bronze medal on Saturday, but lost to Edith Ortiz of Ecuador in the final.
After losing her first-round bout to Perez, Westlake moved on to the repechage, where she faced Cornejo, who had just been defeated by Harris. Westlake also defeated Cornejo, and finished the day in fifth place after losing to Ortiz.
Lemire and Frascadore fifth
Two other Canadians also finished the day at the foot of the podium in their respective weight categories in Peru.
Justin Lemire of Montréal, who won bronze at the Santo Domingo Pan-American Open and gold at the Santiago Open, nearly captured another medal in Lima on Saturday. Up against Mexico’s Gilberto Cardoso in the bronze medal final, the Québécois ultimately finished fifth in the under-73 kg weight class.
In his first fight of the day, Lemire had lost to Toma Sosa of Argentina. In the repechage, he defeated Aldair Barthe Chirrinos of Peru.
A few moments after Lemire’s bout, Julien Frascadore attempted to win a medal in the under-66 kg group. After receiving a first-round bye, he had defeated Alejandra Menendez of the USA in his first fight of the day. He then lost to Peru’s Juan Postigos, a setback that sent him to the repechage.
In that round, he ousted Robin Jara of Mexico before bowing out to Diego Calix of El Salvador in the bronze medal match.
In the same weight class, Adrian Shimabukuru lost to Joaquin Tovagliari of Argentina. Tylor Collin (-60 kg) also lost his only fight of the day to Mateo Condor of Peru.
On Sunday, Canada will be represented by six other judokas on the final day of the Pan-American Open in Lima. Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) and Alexandria Lefort (-70 kg) will be in action, as will David Popovici (-81 kg), Alexandre Arencibia (-90 kg), Keagan Young (-90 kg) and Benjamin Kendrick (-100 kg).
