Montréal, 11 mai 2023 – Quatre mois seulement après son retour à l’entraînement, Louis Krieber-Gagnon a pris part aux Championnats du monde de Doha, au Qatar, où il a conclu avec une fiche d’une victoire et une défaite chez les moins de 90 kg.
Il s’agissait d’une première participation aux mondiaux pour le Québécois depuis 2018.
Ce dernier est d’abord sorti victorieux de son duel l’opposant au Libanais Caramnob Sagaipov au premier tour. Après plus de six minutes de combat, le Canadien est parvenu à projeter Sagaipov au sol pour inscrire un waza-ari.
« J’étais content de l’emporter, ç’a été un beau combat stratégique. À la fin, on était tous les deux fatigués et je l’ai forcé à prendre un deuxième shido. Il a pris plus de risques et j’ai profité d’une ouverture pour marquer », a commenté Louis-Krieber Gagnon.
« Sagaipov est un athlète qui s’est démarqué sur la scène internationale dernièrement. Louis a fait un très bon combat et a été en mesure de garder son calme du début à la fin », a ajouté l’entraîneur de l’équipe nationale Antoine Valois-Fortier.
Krieber-Gagnon avait ensuite rendez-vous avec Mansur Lorsanov et une fois de plus, la prolongation a été nécessaire pour déterminer un vainqueur. L’attaque du Canadien tentée au début du temps supplémentaire a toutefois été contrée par Lorsanov, qui a alors réussi à riposter pour se sauver avec la victoire.
Le Géorgien Luka Maisuradze a été couronné champion du monde des moins de 90 kg en l’emportant en finale face à son compatriote Lasha Bekauri. Les médailles de bronze ont été remises au Suédois Marcus Nyman et au Japonais Sanshiro Murao.
Retour après une blessure
Blessé à une épaule lors des Championnats panaméricains l’an passé, Louis Krieber-Gagnon a subi une opération en juillet et a été tenu à l’écart du judo par la suite. Il a repris l’entraînement en janvier et la compétition en mars, motivé à poursuivre sa progression sur la scène internationale.
« Louis progresse bien et se trouve dans la bonne direction. On est tout près d’un déclic important », a indiqué Valois-Fortier.
Le principal concerné est du même avis et cette expérience aux mondiaux lui a prouvé qu’il avait ce qu’il fallait pour faire partie de l’élite.
« Je suis déçu d’avoir perdu au deuxième combat, mais je vois qu’il ne m’en manque pas beaucoup. Je ne me suis pas fait dominer lors de ma défaite et mon adversaire avait déjà gagné un Grand Chelem en 2021. C’est motivant et ça montre que j’ai ma place, que je suis de niveau. J’ai encore du travail à faire, mais je pourrai faire des podiums à de grandes compétitions », a partagé Krieber-Gagnon.
Kyle Reyes et Shady ElNahas seront les derniers Canadiens en action à ces Championnats du monde. Ils combattront tous les deux chez les moins de 100 kg vendredi.

A First in five years for Louis Krieber-Gagnon
Montréal, May 11, 2023 – Only four months after returning to training, Louis Krieber-Gagnon stepped onto the tatami at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar, where he finished with a record of one win and one loss in the Under 90 kg category. This was the Quebecer’s first World Championships appearance since 2018.
Krieber-Gagnon emerged victorious from his duel with Caramnob Sagaipov (Lebanon) in the first round; after over six minutes of fighting, the Canadian managed to throw Sagaipov to the ground to score a waza-ari.
« I was happy to win, and it was a good bout, strategically speaking. At the end, we were both tired and I forced him to take a second shido. He took more risks, and I took advantage of an opening to score, » commented Louis-Krieber Gagnon.
National Team Coach Antoine Valois-Fortier added, “Sagaipov is an athlete who’s been making a name for himself on the international scene lately. Louis put up a very good fight, and was able to keep his composure from start to finish.”
Krieber-Gagnon then had a date with Mansur Lorsanov; once again, the bout went into overtime to determine a winner. The Canadian’s attack at the onset of overtime was countered by Lorsanov, who then managed to fight back to save himself for the win.
In terms of the overall podium, Luka Maisuradze (Georgia) was crowned the World Champion in the Under-90 kg class, defeating fellow countryman Lasha Bekauri in the final. Bronze medals were awarded to Marcus Nyman (Sweden) and Sanshiro Murao (Japan).
Return after injury
Louis Krieber-Gagnon suffered a shoulder injury at last year’s Pan American Championships and underwent surgery in July – sidelining him from judo for a long period afterwards. He returned to training in January, and then was able to take to the tatami in competitions in March, motivated to continue progressing on the international scene.
« Louis is progressing well, and is headed in the right direction. We’re close to a major breakthrough, » said Valois-Fortier.
The judoka agrees, and notes that his experience at Worlds this year has proven that he has what it takes to be among the world’s elite. « I’m disappointed that I lost the second bout, but I can also see that I’m not missing all that much. I wasn’t dominated during that loss, and on top of it, my opponent had already won a Grand Slam in 2021. It’s motivating and it shows that I have my place, that I’m at the right level. I still have some work to do, but I’ll be able to make podiums at big competitions, » shared an encouraged Krieber-Gagnon.
The last Canadians in action at Worlds will be Kyle Reyes and Shady ElNahas. Both judokas will be competing in the Under 100 kg class on Friday, so stayed tuned for more judo excitement to come!
