Montréal, 9 mai 2026 – En action au tout premier Grand Chelem de sa carrière samedi, à Astana, au Kazakhstan, Lowan Le Bris a tout donné chez les moins de 73 kg, poussant son adversaire jusqu’au temps supplémentaire, où il a finalement écopé d’un troisième shido, ce qui a immédiatement mis fin à l’affrontement.
Pour l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Valois-Fortier, cette première sortie de Le Bris en Grand Chelem, face à un adversaire expérimenté, le Français Maxime Gobert, médaillé d’or à Antalya, en 2023, est de bon augure pour le futur du jeune Canadien.
Le combat a duré un total de 6 min 49 s et le judoka de 18 ans a offert d’excellentes séquences offensives.
« Lowan est encore très jeune, mais il a un potentiel énorme. Il venait ici pour prendre de l’expérience chez les seniors. Ç’a été un combat serré et très tactique et il semble déjà avoir appris énormément d’un duel comme celui-là. C’est le métier qui rentre et je suis optimiste pour ce qui s’en vient », a commenté Antoine Valois-Fortier.
Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard était également en action samedi chez les moins de 63 kg. Après une victoire d’entrée de jeu face à la Kazakhe Samalay Yergaliyeva, la Québécoise a subi une blessure à un genou lors de son deuxième combat de la journée contre Gankhaich Bold, de la Mongolie.
Beauchemin-Pinard n’a pas été en mesure de poursuivre le duel et a également dû se retirer de son combat suivant au repêchage.
« Son combat face à la Mongole allait super bien, elle engageait et effectuait les bonnes poussées. Par contre, en attaquant, elle est tombée au sol et dans un deuxième effort, elle s’est blessée. Le combat s’est immédiatement terminé. Je n’ai pas énormément de détails présentement, mais ça ne semble pas trop majeur. Elle a été super dominante au sol à son premier combat, c’était un classique de Catherine, honnêtement », a expliqué Valois-Fortier.
De son côté, François Gauthier-Drapeau a été limité à un seul combat dans la catégorie des moins de 81 kg. Il s’est incliné face au Brésilien David Lima après avoir profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour. Selon l’entraîneur Valois-Fortier, il s’agissait d’un des meilleurs affrontements de Gauthier-Drapeau face à Lima, un adversaire qui lui a souvent donné du fil à retordre par le passé.
« Il a offert une très bonne opposition, mais il a commis une erreur tactique tôt dans le combat et son adversaire a marqué. À partir de ce moment-là, c’était le jeu du chat et de la souris. Il le chassait et est passé bien proche de l’avoir, mais ça n’a pas été suffisant », a conclu le pilote canadien.
Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) sera la seule Canadienne en action dimanche lors de la dernière journée d’activité au Grand Chelem d’Astana. Elle croisera le fer avec Khuslen Otgonbayar, de la Mongolie, à son premier combat de la journée.

First Grand Slam for Lowan Le Bris
Montréal, May 9, 2026 – In the first Grand Slam of his career, Lowan Le Bris gave his all in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Saturday, forcing his under-73 kg match into overtime, where he ultimately received a third shido, thus putting an end to the bout.
During the fight, which lasted six minutes and forty-nine seconds, the 18-year-old judoka executed some excellent offensive sequences. And in the opinion of Canadian coach Antoine Valois-Fortier, Le Bris’s debut Grand Slam performance against experienced French opponent Maxime Gobert—a gold medallist at Antalya in 2023—bodes well for the young Canadian’s future.
“Lowan is still very young, but he has enormous potential. He came here to gain some experience at the senior level. His match was very close and very tactical, and he seems to have already learned a great deal from a bout like that. He’s really starting to find his feet, and I’m optimistic about what’s to come,” said Valois-Fortier.
Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard also competed on Saturday, in the under-63 kg category. Following a first-round victory over Kazakhstan’s Samalay Yergaliyeva, the Québécoise injured her knee in her second-round clash against Gankhaich Bold of Mongolia.
Beauchemin-Pinard had to forfeit the match, and she was also forced to withdraw from her subsequent bout in the repechage.
“[Catherine’s] fight against the Mongolian was going really well. She was engaging well and pushing hard. However, she fell during one of her attacks, and when she re-attempted it, she hurt herself, and the bout ended immediately. I don’t have any details at this point, but it doesn’t seem to be too serious. In her first match, she was very dominant on the ground, which is classic Catherine, to be honest” explained Valois-Fortier.
In the under-81 kg group, François Gauthier-Drapeau was limited to only one bout. After receiving a first-round bye, he bowed out to David Lima of Brazil. However, according to coach Valois-Fortier, it was one of Gauthier-Drapeau’s best bouts against Lima, who has proven to be an indomitable opponent in the past.
“He put up a very good fight, but he made a tactical error early in the bout, and his opponent was able to score. From that point on, it became a game of cat and mouse. François almost had him a couple of times, but it wasn’t quite enough,” concluded the coach.
Coralie Godbout will be the only Canadian in action on Sunday in Astana, competing in the under-78 kg category on the final day of the Grand Slam. Her first opponent of the day will be Khuslen Otgonbayar of Mongolia.
