Montréal, 17 février 2023 – Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard a signé quatre victoires convaincantes au Grand Chelem de Tel-Aviv, vendredi, terminant sa journée avec le sourire et la médaille d’or des moins de 63 kg autour du cou. Un peu plus tard, son coéquipier François Gauthier-Drapeau a raflé une médaille de bronze chez les moins de 81 kg.
Beauchemin-Pinard compte désormais six médailles en Grand Chelem, dont trois d’or. C’est toutefois son premier podium dans ce circuit depuis 2021. Elle a donc savouré chacune de ses victoires en Israël.
« J’étais déçue de ma cinquième place à Paris, alors je suis vraiment contente d’avoir rectifié le tir et d’avoir réussi à rebondir aujourd’hui », a commenté la médaillée d’or.
En grande finale, elle a défait la Cubaine Maylin Del Toro Carvajal qui l’avait justement privée d’une place sur la troisième marche du podium il y a deux semaines, au Grand Chelem de Paris.
« J’avais un petit sentiment de revanche pour aller chercher cette médaille. J’ai vu l’erreur que j’avais faite à Paris et je ne voulais pas la refaire ici. Je ne suis pas allée chercher le contact et j’ai gardé une bonne distance. Je me suis concentrée sur mon judo et je voulais éviter ses pièges. »
Force est d’admettre que la stratégie était la bonne. La Québécoise a marqué un waza-ari en projetant son adversaire au sol après 1 minute et 40 secondes de combat. À la suite de plusieurs efforts sur les tatamis, elle a saisi le bras de la Cubaine afin de la forcer à l’abandon et inscrire un ippon.
La vice-championne du monde en titre a vaincu la Serbe Anja Obradobic par ippon en prolongation afin d’entamer son parcours. Elle a ensuite disposé de la Kosovare Laura Fazliu et de l’Australienne Katharina Haecker, les deux par ippon en moins de deux minutes.
« Le premier a été dur pour commencer la journée, j’avais du mal à la faire tomber, mais j’ai trouvé une ouverture au sol pour gagner. Les autres combats, j’étais prête à tout ! J’avais quelque chose à prouver contre chaque opposante, alors je suis vraiment contente. »
Gauthier-Drapeau en bronze
Deux semaines après avoir reçu une médaille de bronze au Grand Chelem de Paris, François Gauthier-Drapeau a récidivé à Tel-Aviv, mettant la main sur la quatrième médaille de bronze de sa carrière en Grand Chelem. Il est sorti victorieux de ses duels l’opposant à Odysseas Georgakis, Bolor-Ochir Gereltuya et Timo Cavelius.
Son triomphe contre Cavelius a d’ailleurs fait du bien au Canadien, qui avait perdu son dernier affrontement contre l’Allemand.
« C’est un petit plus ! Il m’avait battu en quart de finale la dernière fois, et là, j’ai eu le dessus. J’ai trouvé le combat beaucoup plus facile. Je suis vraiment content ! »
Gauthier-Drapeau s’est incliné en demi-finale contre le Turc Vedat Albayrak. Il a toutefois terminé en beauté en l’emportant par ippon face au Portugais Joao Fernando, après deux minutes de combat.
« La demi-finale était un peu crève-cœur, j’ai encore le goût amer de cette défaite, mais j’ai été en mesure de me concentrer pour la médaille de bronze. Ça m’a motivé pour la fin, a-t-il souligné. J’avais manqué d’agressivité et de rapidité en demi-finale, alors je voulais me reprendre. »
Également en action en Israël, le Montréalais Arthur Margelidon s’est classé septième chez les moins de 73 kg. Il a été stoppé au repêchage par le Brésilien Daniel Cargnin, éventuel médaillé de bronze.
Dans la même catégorie, Antoine Bouchard a été éliminé dès son premier combat lorsqu’il a été défait par l’Israélien Ido Levin.
Les Canadiens Shady ElNahas et Kyle Reyes combattront tous les deux dans la catégorie des moins de 100 kg samedi, tandis que Marc Deschênes sera du tableau des plus de 100 kg.

Revenge is Golden for Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard
Montréal, February 17, 2023 – Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard soundly defeated four opponents at the Tel Aviv Grand Slam on Friday, capping off her day in the under-63 kg tournament with a gold medal and a smile. A little later, her teammate François Gauthier-Drapeau clinched a bronze medal in the under-81 kg weight category.
Beauchemin-Pinard can now boast having won six Grand Slam medals, including three gold. However, today’s was her first on this circuit since 2021. She therefore savoured each of her victories in Israel.
“I was disappointed with my fifth-place finish in Paris, so I’m really happy to have turned things around and made a comeback today,” stated the gold medallist.
In the grand final, she defeated Cuba’s Maylin Del Toro Carvajal, who was the one to deprive her of a spot on the third step of the podium two weeks ago, at the Paris Grand Slam.
“In going for this medal, I felt a bit like I was avenging myself. I could see the error I had made in Paris, and I didn’t want to let it happen again. I avoided contact with her and I kept my distance. I concentrated on my own judo and on avoiding her traps.”
The strategy seems to have paid off. The Québécoise scored a waza-ari by throwing her opponent to the ground a minute and forty seconds into the fight. Then, after several more efforts on the floor, she grabbed Del Toro Carvajal’s arm, forcing her to give up and scoring an ippon for the win.
Beauchemin-Pinard, the current runner-up world champion, began the tournament by defeating Anja Obradobic of Serbia by ippon in overtime. She then disposed of Laura Fazliu of Kosovo and Katharina Haecker of Australia by ippon, in less than two minutes each.
“My first fight of the day was hard. I had trouble knocking her down, but I found an opening on the ground, which allowed me to win. In my other fights, I was ready for anything! With each of my opponents, I had something to prove, so I’m really happy.”
Bronze for Gauthier-Drapeau
Two weeks after winning a bronze medal at the Paris Grand Slam, François Gauthier-Drapeau repeated the feat in Tel Aviv, nabbing the fourth bronze medal of his Grand Slam career. En route to the podium, he defeated Odysseas Georgakis of Cyprus, Bolor-Ochir Gereltuya of Mongolia and Timo Cavelius of Germany.
For the Canadian, his victory over Cavelius felt extra sweet, as he had lost to him in their last encounter.
“It’s a bit of a bonus! Last time, he beat me in the quarter-final, but this time, I got the upper hand. I found the fight a lot easier. I’m really happy!”
In the semi-final, Gauthier-Drapeau lost to Vedat Albayrak of Turkey. However, he finished the day on a high note, defeating Portugal’s Joao Fernando by ippon after two minutes of combat.
“The semi-final was a bit of a heartbreaker. I still feel bitter about losing, but I was able to refocus on the bronze medal. It motivated me for my last match,” he explained. “I lacked aggression and speed in the semi-final, so I wanted to get back on track.”
Also in action in Israel was Montréal’s Arthur Margelidon, who finished seventh in the under-73 kg category. He was halted in the repechage by Daniel Cargnin of Brazil, who later won a bronze medal.
In the same weight division, Antoine Bouchard was eliminated in the first round by Ido Levin of Israel.
On Saturday, Canadians Shady ElNahas and Kyle Reyes will compete in the under-100 kg group, while Marc Deschênes will be in action in the over-100 kg division.
