Montréal, 30 août 2025 – Charlie Thibault a atteint la grande finale des moins de 70 kg aux Championnats du monde cadets, samedi, à Sofia, en Bulgarie, où elle s’est frottée à une adversaire au sommet de son art.

Thibault a remporté ses quatre premiers combats de la journée afin d’obtenir son billet pour le duel ultime face à Clarisse Vallim. La Brésilienne a réussi une projection bonne pour un yuko dès les premières secondes du combat avant de fermer les livres quelques instants plus tard avec un ippon.

« J’ai vraiment fait une bonne préparation avant la finale, mais ça ne s’est pas passé comme prévu. C’est dommage, j’aurais voulu gagner ou au moins faire un combat plus serré. Ça reste que j’ai quand même une médaille et je me suis bien battue. C’est ma première médaille aux Championnats du monde, être vice-championne du monde cadets, ce n’est pas si mal », a partagé Charlie Thibault.

Le premier combat de la journée de Thibault a eu des allures de marathon. L’athlète de 17 ans a réussi à venir à bout de la Croate Vita Hudicka après 9 min 42 s d’affrontement.

« Ç’a tellement été difficile. Ça m’a demandé beaucoup de concentration et de volonté. J’ai réussi à gagner par immobilisation et j’en suis vraiment contente. Le premier combat est toujours excitant, il y a de la nervosité. »

Thibault a ensuite enchaîné les victoires face à la Luxembourgeoise Leni Welter, la Tchèque Vanessa Karaffova et la Polonaise Diana Benkova afin de rejoindre Vallim en finale.

« J’étais particulièrement contente de ma victoire face à la Tchèque en quart de finale parce que je savais que j’allais me battre pour une médaille, c’était un gros soulagement. Tu veux toujours viser le plus haut possible, mais je ne m’attendais pas à monter sur le podium honnêtement », a avoué Thibault.

À sa dernière année chez les cadets, la Québécoise ne pouvait pas souhaiter une meilleure journée avant de tourner la page sur ce chapitre de sa carrière.

« L’an dernier, j’avais seulement fait deux combats aux mondiaux. Aller chercher une médaille cette fois-ci, je trouve que ça termine bien mes années dans cette catégorie. Ça donne confiance pour la suite », a-t-elle conclu.

Dans la même catégorie que Thibault, Missy Jen Dorval Mbele s’est inclinée à son premier combat face à la Serbe Lucia Pavic.

Abigail Smith et Emiliya Aliyeva ont subi des sorts semblables chez les plus de 70 kg.

Du côté masculin, Matthew Molchanov (-90 kg) a remporté son premier duel face au Grec Angelos Kostelidis avant de subir la défaite au tour suivant contre le Géorgien Giorgi Zurabashvili.

Franck David Moussima Ewane Elouti (+90 kg) a lui aussi remis une fiche d’une victoire et une défaite, l’emportant face à l’Italien Gianluca Picchi et s’inclinant ensuite contre Giorgi Karchaidze, de la Géorgie.

Dans cette même catégorie, Arthur Stivenson a baissé pavillon dès le premier tour.

Les Championnats du monde cadets vont se conclure dimanche, à Sofia, avec la présentation du concours par équipe.

“Cadet world runner-up doesn’t sound too bad” – Charlie Thibault

Montréal, August 30, 2025 – Charlie Thibault reached the final of the under-70 kg category at the Cadet World Championships on Saturday in Sofia, Bulgaria, where encountered an opponent at the top of her game.

The Quebec native won her first four matches of the day to punch her ticket to the final and face off against Brazil’s Clarisse Vallim. The latter scored a yuko after landing a successful throw in the opening seconds of the bout before sealing the deal moments later with an ippon.

“I was fully prepared for the final, but things didn’t go as planned. It’s a shame, I would have liked to win or at least put up a closer fight, but I still earned a medal and put up a good fight. It’s my first medal at the World Championships, and being the cadet world runner-up doesn’t sound too bad,” shared Charlie Thibault.

Thibault’s first fight of the day turned into quite a marathon as the 17-year-old athlete triumphed over Croatia’s Vita Hudicka after 9 minutes and 42 seconds of grueling competition.

“It was incredibly challenging and required tremendous focus and determination. I managed to win by submission, and I’m delighted. The first fight is always exciting but a bit nerve-wracking.”

The Canadian then went on to defeat Luxembourg’s Leni Welter, Czechia’s Vanessa Karaffova, and Poland’s Diana Benkova to meet Vallim in the final.

“I was particularly pleased with my victory over the Czech in the quarter-finals because I knew I was going to be contending for a medal, which was a huge relief. You always want to aim for the top, but to be honest, I didn’t expect to make it onto the podium,” admitted Thibault.

Competing in her final year as a cadet, the Quebecer couldn’t have asked for a better day before turning the page on this chapter of her career.

“Last year, I only fought two matches at the world championships. Winning a medal this time around is a great way to end my career in this category, and it gives me confidence for the future,” she concluded.

Competing in the same category as Thibault, Missy Jen Dorval Mbele lost her first match to Serbian Lucia Pavic.

Abigail Smith and Emiliya Aliyeva suffered similar fates in the over-70 kg weight class.

On the men’s side, Matthew Molchanov (-90 kg) won his first bout against Greece’s Angelos Kostelidis before falling to Georgia’s Giorgi Zurabashvili in the next round.

Franck David Moussima Ewane Elouti (+90 kg) also recorded a win and a loss, defeating Italy’s Gianluca Picchi before succumbing to Giorgi Karchaidze of Georgia.

Arthur Stivenson was eliminated in the first round in the same category.

The Cadet World Championships will conclude on Sunday in Sofia with the team event.
