Judo Canada – European Cup
Montreal, October 1, 2016 – Even if his goal was to fight for a medal, Canadian Warren Seib was quite happy with his experience in the Under 73 kg class at the European Judo Cup of Tampere, Finland, Saturday.
After beginning the day with a win by ippon over Finnish Arttu Maatta, he went on to lose by waza-ari to French Samuel N Zingo, who would go on to win the tournament.
In the repechage round, he beat Swedish Frederik Gourlay by penalties, but was then eliminated by Victor Allansson and kept from the bronze medal bout.
“Overall, I am very happy with my day,” said Seib. “I felt like I was able to push the pace and control the gripping for the majority of my fights. I was hoping to fight for a medal today, and I am a little disappointed that I missed out on that opportunity.”
“I was leading my last fight by a penalty with thirty seconds left, when my opponent and I got into a scramble situation,” continued the Saskatchewan. “I ended up being thrown for a yuko and couldn't make the come back. I'm excited for another opportunity next weekend in Serbia.”
There were only five athletes in the Under 48 kg division – not enough to form a regular bracket, so the tournament took the form of a round robin. Erin Morgan, the only Canadian in that class, won only one of her four fights, the first of the day against Spanish Daine Cordero Gimenez.
Undefeated, French Melodie Vauarny snatched the gold medal. Mauritian Priscilla Morand finished second, ahead of Finnish Marianne Kosonen.
In the Under 63 kg, Jaquina Simao lost her two fights of the day, both by yuko. She bowed out to French Marine Giraud, and then succumbed to Finnish Alexandra Baton.
The final was an all-French duel. Laetitia Blot disposed of Marine Giraud to climb onto the highest step of the podium.
