Calgary, May 31, 2018 – Water Polo Canada (WPC) is pleased to announce the launch of a new National Legacy Development Centre (NLDC) in Calgary in collaboration with the Alberta Water Polo Association, the Repsol Centre and the Calgary Board of Education. As part of the overall WPC High Performance (HP) development strategy, the NLDC will raise the level of the daily training environment for 19U and postsecondary athletes and will help the overall system alignment in Canadian water polo.
Over the past year, WPC national team staff evaluated the current landscape of high performance programming and concluded that the future of our prospective and current Age Group National Team athletes across Canada should have access to higher levels of training. This National Legacy Development Centre along with the Regional Development Centres are some of the initiatives that WPC created to enhance the depth and quality of our feeder system.
This new program will offer an enhanced training context where athletes will be able to develop a wide range of physical and technical skills. Water Polo Canada believes in a holistic approach when it comes to athletes’ progression, and an integrated process will allow athletes to excel in an out of the water.
In collaboration with the Calgary Board of Education and two associated high schools, the NLDC will offer customizable services and allow athletes to develop in a flexible academic environment. The continued partnership with the Repsol Sport Centre will also allow WPC and AWPA to optimize training support for athletes at a world-class facility. The 19U and post-secondary athletes will have the opportunity to work with a WPC Coach, and they will access to dedicated training blocks, and individualized strength and conditioning programs.

This is one of the next phases in the alignment of the high performance profile and a huge benefit in western Canada. The program will be a strong addition to the great work that the clubs in the city are currently doing” said Dayna Christmas, Alberta Water Polo Executive Director.
“The relocation of our Men’s National Team has given us the opportunity to continue the growth water polo in Calgary with the National Legacy Development Centre program that will support both male and female athletes on their pathway to our National Team Program. This new initiative is part of our overall high performance strategy and one of the key element of our 2016-2021 Strategic Plan. I would like to personally thank all our partners in sport who have supported our efforts to get this project off the ground, and who have contributed to getting this project ready for the fall of 2018.” mentioned Justin Oliveira, High Performance Director.
The National Legacy Development Centre is one of the initiatives WPC wishes to implement to improve system alignment and athlete support.

Water Polo Canada lance un Centre National de Développement Héritage à Calgary
Calgary, 31 mai, 2018 – Water Polo Canada (WPC) a le plaisir d’annoncer le lancement d’un nouveau Centre National de Développement Héritage (CNDH) à Calgary, en collaboration avec l’Association de Water Polo de l’Alberta, le Centre Repsol et la Commission scolaire de Calgary. Le CNDH représente une des pièces maitresses de la stratégie globale haute performance de WPC, cela permettra d’élever le niveau de l’environnement d’entraînement quotidien pour les athlètes 19 ans et moins et d’âge postsecondaire et amènera un meilleur alignement de système au sein du water-polo canadien.
Au cours de la dernière année, le personnel de l’équipe nationale de WPC a procédé à l’évaluation de la programmation haute performance et il a été conclu que les athlètes des équipes nationales par groupe d’âge devraient avoir accès à un plus haut niveau d’entraînement. Ce Centre National de Développement Héritage ainsi que les Centres de Développement Régional sont des initiatives visant à améliorer la qualité et la profondeur de notre système de recrutement.
Ce nouveau programme offre un contexte d’entraînement amélioré où les athlètes pourront développer plusieurs habiletés physiques et techniques. Water Polo Canada adopte une approche holistique dans la progression des athlètes ainsi qu’un processus intégré permettant à ceux-ci d’exceller à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur de la piscine.
En collaboration avec la Commission scolaire de Calgary ainsi que deux écoles secondaires locales, le CNDH offre des services sur mesure permettant aux athlètes de développer un environnement académique flexible. Le partenariat actuel avec le Centre Repsol aidera WPC et AWPA à optimiser le soutien à l’entraînement puisque les athlètes auront accès à des installations de calibre mondiale. Les athlètes 19U et de niveau postsecondaire auront l’opportunité de travailler avec un entraîneur WPC et ils auront accès à des blocs dédiés d’entraînement en plus de programmes individualisés de conditionnement physique.
« Alberta Water Polo est emballée par la venue du Centre Héritage de Calgary ainsi que pour les athlètes qui pourront y accéder. Il s’agit d’une des phases importantes de l’alignement du profil haute performance et un excellent apport pour l’Ouest du Canada. Ce programme sera un ajout majeur à l’excellent travail que font déjà nos clubs locaux » a dit Dayna Christmas, Directrice Générale de l’Association de Water Polo de l’Alberta.
« Le déménagement de l’équipe nationale masculine nous a donné l’opportunité de poursuivre la croissance du water-polo à Calgary avec la mise sur pied de ce Centre National de Développement Héritage qui appuiera les athlètes dans leur cheminement vers le programme d’équipe nationale. Cette nouvelle initiative fait partie d’une stratégie globale de haute performance qui est directement liée à un élément-clé du Plan Stratégique 2016-2021. J’aimerais d’ailleurs remercier tous nos partenaires sportifs qui ont soutenu nos efforts dans la conception de ce projet et qui contribuent présentement à la réalisation de celui-ci en vue de l’ouverture à l’automne 2018 » a mentionné Justin Oliveira, Directeur Haute Performance WPC.
Le Centre National de Développement Héritage compte parmi les initiatives que WPC souhaite mettre sur pied afin d’améliorer l’alignement de système ainsi que le soutien aux athlètes.
