Montréal, 2 mars 2025 – Yehor Paladii a combattu pour une médaille de bronze en fin de journée dimanche à la Coupe européenne junior de Malaga, en Espagne. L’Ontarien s’est toutefois incliné dans les derniers instants du combat face à l’Estonien Jakob Vares, prenant ainsi la cinquième place chez les moins de 100 kg.

« Yehor a fait quelques erreurs lors de son match pour la médaille de bronze. Il était en avance en début de combat, mais il a pris des risques qui lui ont finalement couté très cher. Il a démontré de belles choses contre les meilleurs judokas au monde. C’est frustrant de terminer cinquième, mais nous avons appris des leçons qui nous aideront pour le futur », a commenté l’entraîneur canadien Sasha Mehmedovic.

Après un duel marathon en début de journée où Paladii s’est incliné après avoir reçu une troisième pénalité en temps supplémentaire, l’athlète de 18 ans l’a emporté de façon expéditive au repêchage face à l’Espagnol Aritz Lavado Reta, avant de jouer le même tour à Cai Castany Crespo, lui aussi de l’Espagne, afin d’obtenir son billet pour une finale de bronze.

Pour Paladii, il s’agissait d’une deuxième compétition seulement chez les moins de 100 kg, lui qui combattait auparavant à moins de 90 kg.

Du côté féminin, la Britanno-Colombienne Carla Van Zyl est la seule représentante de l’unifolié à avoir trouvé le chemin de la victoire dimanche à Malaga.

Dans le tableau de moins de 57 kg, Van Zyl a remporté ses deux premiers duels de la journée face à l’Israélienne Lilach Pantanowitz et à la Polonaise Kalina Zozulinska.

La Canadienne s’est toutefois avouée vaincue en quarts de finale devant la Française Emma Melis, éventuelle médaillée d’or. Van Zyl n’a pas été en mesure de se reprendre au repêchage où elle a été défaite par l’Israélienne Hili Zakroisky, qui a terminé sa journée sur la troisième marche du podium.

De leur côté, Hayden Thibeault (-57 kg) et Angelina McCristall (-48) se sont inclinées à leur premier duel de la journée alors que Valerie Kostrovets (-52 kg) n’a pas trouvé le chemin de la victoire en deux combats.

Rappelons que samedi, Catherine Toshkov a remporté la seule médaille canadienne du week-end à Malaga, en montant sur la troisième marche du podium chez les moins de 63 kg.

Les judokas canadiens juniors prendront maintenant la direction de Portimao, au Portugal, pour une nouvelle Coupe européenne junior dès samedi prochain, le 8 mars.

Yehor Paladii ends up just off the podium

Montréal, March 2, 2025 – Yehor Paladii put up a solid fight in the bronze medal round, at the end of his Sunday at the Judo Junior European Cup in Malaga, Spain. The Ontario judoka was unfortunately bested in the very last moments of his bout against Estonia’s Jakob Vares, and had to settle for fifth place finish in the Under 100kg class.

“Yehor made a few mistakes in his bronze medal match. He was ahead at the start of the bout, but he took risks that cost him quite a lot in the end. He did however demonstrate great things against the best judokas in the world. It’s certainly frustrating to finish fifth, but we learned some lessons that can help us in the future,” sagely commented Canada’s Coach Sasha Mehmedovic.

Paladii started the day with a marathon duel, where he lost after earning a third penalty in overtime. Yet the 18-year-old didn’t need much time to win the repechage against Spain’s Aritz Lavado Reta. He then used the same playbook to face Cai Castany Crespo (Spain), to secure a ticket to a bronze medal final.

Notably, this is only Paladii’s second competition in the Under 100kg class, having previously competed in the Under 90kg category.

In women’s judo action, British Colombia’s Carla Van Zyl was the only Canadian judoka to win on Sunday in Malaga.

In the Under 57kg category, Van Zyl won her first two duels of the day: one against Israel’s Lilach Pantanowitz and the other against Poland’s Kalina Zozulinska.

However, the Canadian was then defeated in the quarter-finals by eventual gold medallist Emma Melis (France). Van Zyl was sadly unable to recover lost ground in the repechage, where she was defeated on the tatami by Israel’s Hili Zakroisky – the latter who finished her day on the third step of the podium.

Meanwhile, Hayden Thibeault (-57 kg) and Angelina McCristall (-48) lost their first duels of the day, while Valerie Kostrovets (-52 kg) was unable to score a win in two bouts on the mat.

On Saturday, Catherine Toshkov won the only Canadian medal of the weekend in Malaga, taking third place in the Under 63kg category.

Canada’s junior judokas will now head to Portimao, Portugal, for another Junior European Cup that kicks off next Saturday, March 8. Stay tuned to watch the future of Canadian judo!
