Montréal, 24 mars 2024 – La Coupe du monde de Berlin, en Allemagne, donne bon espoir au duo de Nathan Zsombor-Murray et Rylan Wiens avant les Jeux olympiques de Paris. Dans un duel assez serré contre l’Australie, ils ont remporté la médaille d’argent à la plateforme de 10 m en synchro, dimanche.
« Je pense que tout était bon, sauf notre cinquième plongeon. On a un petit peu raté notre renversé, mais appart ça, nous étions très constants », a analysé Nathan Zsombor-Murray.
Dès ses deux premiers passages à la tour, le duo déjà qualifié pour Paris se taillait déjà une place dans le top-3 provisoire. Les Canadiens ont mis les bouchées doubles lors du troisième saut, ce qui les a devancés au deuxième rang, chose qu’ils ont réussi à maintenir jusqu’à leur sixième et dernier passage à la plateforme afin de conclure avec un pointage total de 408,99.
« Notre troisième plongeon était très bon. On a démontré de quoi nous étions capables. Notre dernier plongeon aussi était très bon, donc la seule chose qu’on devra améliorer c’est nos plongeons de base, soit les deux premiers et le cinquième », a poursuivi le Québécois âgé de 20 ans.
« Ça fait quelques années qu’on plonge ensemble aussi alors je suis confiant pour Paris. On a notre petite routine et je pense qu’on a bien établi ce que nous devons faire afin d’avoir une bonne compétition, donc nous allons essayer de recréer ça lors des Olympiques. »
Thomas Daley et Noah Williams, représentants de la Grande-Bretagne, ont remporté l’or (465,00), tandis que Cassiel Rousseau et Domonic Bedggood, de l’Australie, ont complété le podium (402,57).
McKay décorée de bronze
Chez les femmes, Caeli McKay s’est elle aussi démarquée lors de la finale du 10 m. L’athlète de 24 ans s’est battue jusqu’au bout contre la Britannique Andrea Spendolini Sirieix et l’Américaine Delaney Schnell. C’est finalement McKay qui a eu le dessus sur l’Américaine en bouclant le podium avec une récolte de 331,30 points, soit 7,80 points derrière la Britannique.
« Ma performance a plutôt bien été aujourd’hui (dimanche). Je n’ai pas été parfaite dans tous mes plongeons, mais je suis contente de mon quatrième saut qui a super bien été », a mentionné la Calgarienne d’origine par rapport à son envol le plus relevé.
McKay était huitième après son premier saut, mais elle a vite rectifié la situation en prenant le quatrième rang provisoire après son troisième envol.
« Cette médaille représente beaucoup pour moi compte tenu du fait que j’avais terminé quatrième à la Coupe du monde de Montréal. Ça fait beaucoup de bien d’être sur le podium. J’ai encore beaucoup de choses sur lesquelles travailler, mais j’ai vraiment hâte d’aller à Xi’an ».
Avec un spectaculaire pointage de 432,80, c’est la Chinoise Hongchan Quan qui a mis la main sur l’or, suivi de Spendolini Sirieix.
Elaena Dick représentait aussi la feuille d’érable au 10 m individuel, où elle a pris le huitième rang avec 308,60 points.
Le prochain arrêt du circuit de la Coupe du monde de plongeon sera disputé à Xi’an, en Chine, du 19 au 21 avril prochain.

Zsombor-Murray and Wiens Second in Berlin
Montréal, March 24, 2024 – Coming out of the Berlin World Cup, Nathan Zsombor-Murray and Rylan Wiens are feeling optimistic about the Olympic Games in Paris. Following a tight contest against Australia, they won the silver medal in the men’s 10m synchronized dive event on Sunday.
“I think everything went well, except for our fifth dive. We messed up our reverse a bit, but apart from that, we were pretty consistent,” commented Zsombor-Murray.
Following their first two attempts, the duo, which has already qualified for the Paris Games, had already carved out a spot in the top three. The Canadians pulled out all the stops on their third dive to move up into second place, a position they held through their sixth and final plunge. They finished the competition with a total score of 408.99 points.
“Our third dive went very well. We showed what we’re capable of. Our last one was also good, so the only thing we need to improve on is our basic dives, i.e. the first two and the fifth,” added the 20-year-old Québécois.
“We’ve been diving together for a few years now, so I’m feeling confident about Paris. We have our routine, and I think we know what we have to do to perform well in competition, so we’ll try to recreate that at the Olympics.”
Thomas Daley and Noah Williams of Great Britain won gold with a final score of 465.00 points, while Cassiel Rousseau and Domonic Bedggood of Australia captured bronze with 402.57.
Bronze for McKay
On the women’s side, Caeli McKay also performed well in the individual 10m final. The 24-year-old athlete battled hard until the very end against Andrea Spendolini Sirieix of Great Britain and Delaney Schnell of the USA. McKay ultimately edged out the American, securing the final spot on the podium with 331.30 points, 7.80 points behind Spendolini Sirieix.
“I dove pretty well today [Sunday]. My dives weren’t all perfect, but I was happy with my fourth dive, which went really well,” said the Calgarian, referring to her most difficult dive of the day.
McKay was in eighth place after her first attempt, but quickly rectified the situation by taking provisional fourth place following her third plunge.
“This medal means a lot to me, especially since I finished fourth at the World Cup in Montréal. It feels really good to be on the podium. I still have lots of things to work on, but I’m really looking forward to going to Xi’an.”
With a spectacular score of 432.80 points, Hongchan Quan of China won the gold medal, followed by Spendolini Sirieix.
Elaena Dick also represented Canada in the individual 10m event, where she finished eighth with 308.60 points.
The next stop on the Diving World Cup circuit will be Xi’an, China, from April 19-21.
