Keagan Young surprises at first Worlds

Montréal, October 8, 2026 – Ontario’s Keagan Young started strong in his first match in the Under 90 kg division at the Judo World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. However, in the same bout, he was later caught off guard by Eljan Hajiyev (Azerbaijan), who scored an ippon that ended the Canadian’s day.

Proactive in the match right from the start, the Canadian quickly got on the scoreboard with a yuko. However, Hajiyev wasn’t ready to call it a day, and quickly fought back, scoring an ippon in the ensuing exchanges to defeat Young.

“Keagan set the tone by scoring early, but he may have gotten a little overexcited, and wasn’t able to manage the rest of the bout. He was a bit disappointed, especially since he was the first to score, which proved he was capable of competing with his opponent,” commented Canadian Coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.

In the final in Under 90 kg weight category, Sanshiro Murao became World Champion by defeating his compatriot Goki Tajima. Azerbaijan’s Murat Fatiyev and Serbia’s Boris Rutovic also took home honours, as both were bronze medal winners.

A gold medalist at the Pan American Open in Buenos Aires, and at the Santiago Pan American Open last June, Keagan Young faced a formidable opponent in this, his first senior World Championships. Eljan Hajiyev won a bronze medal at last year’s World Championships that took place in Hungary. The latter had also won the Grand Slam in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, in 2025.

Coach Valois-Fortier commented, “It was a sizable challenge right from the start, but I believe Keagan has the ability to throw just about anyone. It’s a shame he wasn’t able to control the match more after he scored – he was physically ready for this important competition.”

Regardless of outcome, Coach Valois-Fortier knows that this World Championships experience will be beneficial for his athlete’s future.

“We know he has what it takes, but he’s still a little short on experience to be honest. It’s because of big matches like this one that he’ll gain that experience. There are positives to what happened today—he scored—and that’s part of learning the ropes in major championships. He’s capable of scoring; now he needs to learn how to handle the pressure better.”

Kyle Reyes (-100 kg) and Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) will be on the tatami for Team Canada on Friday, for the penultimate day of individual competitions in Baku. Reyes will face Portugal’s Jorge Fonseca early in the day, while Godbout has received a first-round bye, and will face the winner of the match between Ukraine’s Anna Kazakova and India’s Ishroop Narang.
