« Il n’y a rien d’acquis en judo » – François Gauthier-Drapeau

La relève se signale en Allemagne

Montréal, 25 mars 2023 – Tous deux inscrits au tableau des moins de 81 kg au Grand Chelem de Tbilissi, en Géorgie, François Gauthier-Drapeau et Mohab ElNahas ont été surpris par d’éventuels finalistes à leur seul combat du jour, samedi. Une performance à la fois frustrante et décevante, mais qui servira de motivation pour les prochaines compétitions.

Confronté à Askerbii Gerbekov, de Bahreïn, Gauthier-Drapeau est demeuré fidèle à son plan de match sur le tatami, mais est finalement arrivé à court. Après avoir vu son rival marquer un waza-ari en milieu de combat, le Québécois a voulu accentuer la pression, ce qui a ouvert la porte à Gerbekov qui n’a pas raté sa chance de mettre fin aux hostilités avec une clé de bras bonne pour le ippon.

« Je le connais bien et je savais à quoi m’attendre. Malheureusement, je me suis fait contrer une attaque et il a marqué un point assez bizarre. Après ça, j’attaquais et j’avais du rythme, mais il en manquait toujours juste un peu. À la fin, j’ai voulu y aller le tout pour le tout, j’ai étiré mon bras et il en a profité », a expliqué Gauthier-Drapeau après son duel.

Le Canadien, 11^e au classement mondial et médaillé de bronze à ses deux dernières sorties en Grand Chelem, a ensuite vu Gerbekov, 44^e au monde, poursuivre son chemin jusqu’à la cinquième place après une défaite dans l’une des finales de bronze.

« C’est choquant pour moi, parce que je ne me suis pas senti perdant dans mon combat, a-t-il poursuivi. J’étais capable de faire mon judo et j’ai fait ce qu’il fallait, mais il m’en a manqué juste un petit peu. Il n’y a rien d’acquis en judo. Un combat peut aller dans toutes les directions et le classement ne veut jamais rien dire ! »

Son coéquipier Mohab ElNahas a subi le même genre de traitement en s’inclinant par ippon d’entrée de jeu contre le Kazakh Abylaikhan Zhubanazar, futur médaillé d’argent de la catégorie remportée par l’Autrichien Wachid Borchashvili

De son côté, Antoine Bouchard s’est lui aussi avoué vaincu d’emblée, mais chez les moins de 73 kg, où il a perdu contre le Géorgien Kote Kapanadze.

Certes déçus, les trois judokas canadiens n’auront pas à patienter bien longtemps avant de renouer avec la compétition. Ils seront tous du Grand Chelem prévu le week-end prochain, à Antalya, en Turquie, ce qui constituera l’occasion parfaite de rebondir.

« On y pense déjà et on a hâte de s’entraîner en début de semaine pour corriger nos erreurs. On va se pratiquer pour revenir plus forts », a conclu François Gauthier-Drapeau.

Avant toute chose, ce dernier ira encourager ses compatriotes Louis Krieber-Gagnon (-90 kg) et Shady ElNahas (-100 kg) qui fouleront les tatamis dimanche, en clôture du Grand Chelem de Tbilissi.

Trois médailles en Allemagne

Plusieurs autres Canadiens étaient en action samedi, à l’occasion de deux compétitions disputées du côté de l’Allemagne. Tout d’abord, 11 judokas masculins ont combattu à Brême, dans le cadre du Tournoi des maîtres des moins de 18 ans.

Du lot, deux ont terminé leur journée sur le podium, soit Yehor Paladii et Tigran Kryvytskyi, respectivement médaillés d’or et de bronze chez les moins de 81 kg.

« Ils ont été fantastiques aujourd’hui ! Ils sont jeunes, très talentueux et nous sommes très heureux de les voir sur le podium. Ils ont beaucoup de potentiel et ce genre de résultat nous permet de constater que le futur s’annonce prometteur », a commenté l’entraîneur national Saha Mehmedovic au sujet de ses protégés.

Pour leur part, Loic Beaton (-55 kg), Elisey Sokolov (-73 kg), Oleksandr Kaplin (-90 kg), Matys Rainville (+90 kg) ont tous atteint le repêchage de leur catégorie respective, sans toutefois être en mesure d’obtenir un classement.

Constat similaire pour Vincent Nepton (-60 kg), Denis Neyolov (-60 kg), Fahd Fithane (-66 kg) et Artem Neyolov (-73 kg), qui ont terminé leur journée avec deux victoires en trois combats. De son côté, Vincent Roberge-Poitras (-66 kg) s’est incliné à son seul duel du jour.

Toujours en Allemagne, mais un peu plus au nord, 21 filles ont pris part à la Coupe internationale de Thuringe.

Quatre d’entre elles ont atteint des finales de bronze dans cette compétition qui se déroulait à Bad Blankenburg, soit Charline Bourque (-70 kg) et Marianna Karas (+70 kg) chez les moins de 18 ans, de même que Marie-Lune Turmel (-48 kg)et Heidi Quach (-48 kg), chez les moins de 21 ans.

Turmel est la seule du groupe à être montée sur le podium, alors que ses coéquipiers ont bouclé leur tournoi respectif en cinquième place.

Notons que Laurence Gagnon (-52 kg), Leanna Au (-52 kg) et Alyssa Tkachenko (-57 kg) ont été les seules autres athlètes à signer une victoire chez les cadets (U18). Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) et Loika Robertson (-63 kg) terminent quant à elles avec trois et un gain chez les juniors (U21).

Pour leur part, Avery Gibney (-52 kg) et Margot Chevalier (-63 kg) se sont inclinées à leur premier combat chez les moins de 18 ans.

Leurs comparses Charlize Isabelle Medilo (-48 kg), Ekaterina Danilkov (-48 kg), Sarra Bourihane (-52 kg), Violette Louet (-52 kg), Mahée Savoie (-57 kg), Hailey Ko (-57 kg), Catherine Toshkov (-57 kg), Aliya Koliaska (-57 kg), Karas Kodelia (-57 kg) et Laurence Biron (-70 kg) ont connu le même sort dans le groupe d’âge supérieur.

Biron, Danilkov, Savoie et Kodelia ont tout de même eu une deuxième chance au repêchage, en vain.

Si la Coupe internationale de Thuringe est maintenant terminée, les activités se poursuivront dimanche à Brême, avec la présentation des tournois chez les moins de 21 ans. Pas moins de 17 athlètes du Canada concourront pour l’occasion.

Rising Stars Make Their Mark in Germany

Montréal, March 25, 2023 – Canadians François Gauthier-Drapeau and Mohab ElNahas both faced upsets in their first and only bouts of the day in the under-81 kg draw at the Tbilisi Grand Slam in Georgia on Saturday. It was a frustrating and disappointing outcome for the two judokas, but one they will use as motivation for their next competitions.

Although Gauthier-Drapeau stuck to his game plan throughout his match against Askerbii Gerbekov of Bahrain, he ultimately came up short. After his opponent scored a waza-ari in the middle of the bout, the Québécois attempted to increase the pressure; however, the tactic turned on him when Gerbekov grabbed him in an arm lock, scoring an ippon to end the fight.

“I know him well and I had a good idea of what to expect. Unfortunately, he countered one of my attacks and scored a weird point. After that, I kept on attacking and I built up a good pace, but it just wasn’t enough. In the end, I decided to go all out, but when I put my arm out, he took advantage of it,” explained Gauthier-Drapeau, following his bout.

The Canadian, who is eleventh in the world rankings and who won bronze medals at his last two Grand Slams, then had to watch as Gerbekov, who is ranked 44th, continued his run to fifth place after losing one of the bronze medal finals.

“It’s frustrating for me, because I didn’t feel like I was going to lose the fight,” he added. “I was able to do my judo, and I did what I needed to do, but it just wasn’t quite enough. There are no guarantees in judo. A fight can go in any direction, and rankings don’t always mean much!”

His teammate Mohab ElNahas found himself in a similar situation after losing his first and only match of the day by ippon to Abylaikhan Zhubanazar of Kazakhstan, who later won the silver medal. Wachid Borchashvili of Austria clinched gold in the category.

Antoine Bouchard also lost his first fight of the day to Kote Kapanadze of Georgia in the under-73 kg weight category.

Although they are disappointed, the three Canadian judokas will not have to wait long for their next competitions. Next weekend, they will be back on the tatamis at the Antalya Grand Slam in Turkey, where they will have a chance to rebound from today’s setbacks.

“We’re already thinking ahead and we’re looking forward to training this week, so that we can work on our mistakes. We’ll keep practicing so we can come back stronger,” concluded Gauthier-Drapeau.

But meanwhile, he will cheer on his teammates Louis Krieber-Gagnon (-90 kg) and Shady ElNahas (-100 kg), who will compete on Sunday, the final day of the Tbilisi Grand Slam.

Three medals in Germany

Several other Canadians were in action on Saturday at two tournaments in Germany. Eleven male judokas competed at the U18 Masters Tournament in Bremen, two of whom finished on the podium. Yehor Paladii and Tigran Kryvytskyi won gold and bronze, respectively, in the under-81 kg class.

“They were fantastic today! They’re young, they’re very talented, and we were very happy to see them on the podium. They have a lot of potential, and this type of result makes the future look promising,” stated national team coach Sasha Mehmedovic.

Loic Beaton (-55 kg), Elisey Sokolov (-73 kg), Oleksandr Kaplin (-90 kg) and Matys Rainville (+90 kg) advanced to the repechage in their respective weight categories, but did not rank.

Similarly, Vincent Nepton (-60 kg), Denis Neyolov (-60 kg), Fahd Fithane (-66 kg) and Artem Neyolov (-73 kg) each ended their day with two wins in three bouts. Vincent Roberge-Poitras (-66 kg) lost his only fight of the day.

A little further north in Germany, 21 female Canadians competed at the International Cup in in the town of Bad Blankenburg in Thuringia.

Four advanced to the bronze medal finals: Charline Bourque (-70 kg) and Marianna Karas (+70 kg) in the U18 age group, and Marie-Lune Turmel (-48 kg)and Heidi Quach (-48 kg) in the U21 group.

Turmel was the only one to step onto the podium, while her teammates all finished fifth.

Laurence Gagnon (-52 kg), Leanna Au (-52 kg) and Alyssa Tkachenko (-57 kg) were the only other judokas to win bouts in the Cadet category (U18). In the Junior category (U21), Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) won three fights and Loika Robertson (-63 kg) won one.

Avery Gibney (-52 kg) and Margot Chevalier (-63 kg) lost their first matches of the day in the U18 group.

Their compatriots Charlize Isabelle Medilo (-48 kg), Ekaterina Danilkov (-48 kg), Sarra Bourihane (-52 kg), Violette Louet (-52 kg), Mahée Savoie (-57 kg), Hailey Ko (-57 kg), Catherine Toshkov (-57 kg), Aliya Koliaska (-57 kg), Karas Kodelia (-57 kg) and Laurence Biron (-70 kg) met the same fate in the U21 category.

Biron, Danilkov, Savoie and Kodelia received a second chance in the repechage, but to no avail.

Although the International Cup in Thuringia is now over, the action will continue in Bremen on Sunday at the U21 tournament, where seventeen Canada athletes will hit the tatamis.
