Montréal, 18 avril 2025 – La délégation canadienne cadette a fait sentir sa présence vendredi lors de la première journée de compétitions des Championnats panaméricains cadets et juniors, à Lima, au Pérou. Les représentants de l’unifolié ont raflé 15 médailles, dont 3 d’or pour lancer les hostilités.

Connor Gallant (-66 kg), Tristan Bourque (-81 kg) et Maia Thomson (-63 kg) ont tous remis des fiches parfaites vendredi afin de grimper sur la plus haute marche du podium de leur catégorie respective.

Thomson a mené la charge du côté féminin en s’imposant en prolongation en grande finale des moins de 63 kg face à la Brésilienne Anna Julia Sperling aux pénalités.

L’Albertaine avait auparavant vaincu l’Américaine Kaiya Johnston et l’Équatorienne Katherine Galarza afin d’obtenir son billet pour la finale.

« Le premier combat de Maia a probablement été son plus difficile, il y avait peut-être un peu de stress, mais ç’a donné le ton au reste de la journée et elle n’a jamais ralenti! Elle était très confiante et a été capable de s’imposer en finale contre la Brésilienne, qui est une excellente athlète. Maia était une des candidates à une médaille d’or aujourd’hui, elle a de l’expérience sur la scène internationale et ç’a paru », a partagé l’entraîneur canadien Alexandre Émond.

Dans la même catégorie, Victoria Summers a raflé l’une des médailles de bronze à l’enjeu en ayant le dessus sur Katherine Galarza lors de son dernier duel du jour.

Toutes les athlètes canadiennes en action vendredi à Lima ont terminé la journée avec une médaille autour du cou. Melody Grenier (-52 kg), Myroslava Bondarenko (-57 kg) et Charlie Thibault (-70 kg) sont montés sur la deuxième marche du podium de leur catégorie respective, alors qu’Addyson Tamura (-48 kg), Maegan Grouten (-52 kg), Missy Jen Dorval Mbele (-70 kg) et Emily Harris (+70 kg) se sont couvertes de bronze.

Chez les hommes, Connor Gallant a été le premier à fouler la plus haute marche du podium après sa victoire en finale des moins de 66 kg face l’Américain Theodore Lehmen. L’Albertain avait eu raison du Péruvien Jonas Guanipa et de l’Argentin Thiago Carvallo en début de journée.

« Connor a été très bon, il se sentait super bien en début de journée et il a été en mesure de revenir de l’arrière lors de son deuxième combat en mettant beaucoup de pression sur son adversaire. Il a super bien géré sa finale également, c’était une excellente journée, il a été exemplaire », a raconté Émond.

Tristan Bourque a rapidement imité son compatriote. Après avoir vaincu le Chilien Alberto Zambra et l’Américain Shota Kundukashvili, le Québécois a complété sa conquête en l’emportant en prolongation, en finale contre l’Australien Akos Kelly.

« Tristan dominait la finale, mais son adversaire effectuait de belles esquives. En prolongation, il a profité de la fatigue de son adversaire pour changer un peu de stratégie, il y est allé au corps à corps pour finalement marquer le point de la victoire », a conclu l’entraîneur canadien.

Deux autres canadiens ont atteint la finale de leur catégorie vendredi, Oleksandr Smakula s’est incliné en finale des moins de 50 kg face au Brésilien Gabriel Cruz alors que Franck David Moussima Ewane Elouti (+90 kg) s’est rendu à la limite du temps réglementaire lors de son dernier duel de la journée, s’avouant finalement vaincu par un yuko face à l’Américain Kanta Ueyama.

Lowan Le Bris (-73 kg) et Matthew Molchanov (-90 kg) ont complété la récolte de médailles canadiennes avec deux médailles de bronze.

Également en action vendredi, Akhmed Loliev (-50 kg), Xavier Brouillette (-55 kg) et Amir Temirbaev (-60 kg) se sont inclinés en finale de bronze, alors que Roman Semyrozum (-55 kg) a terminé au septième rang.

La compétition se poursuit samedi à Lima alors que les athlètes de niveaux juniors se disputeront les titres de champions panaméricains.

Medals Galore for Canada at Cadet Pan-American Championships

Montréal, April 18, 2025 – The Canadian cadet delegation definitely made its presence felt on day one of the Cadet and Junior Pan-American Championships in Lima, Peru, capturing fifteen medals on Friday, including three gold.

Connor Gallant (-66 kg), Tristan Bourque (-81 kg), and Maia Thomson (-63 kg) climbed to the top of the podium in their respective categories, thanks to their perfect competition records.

Thomson led the charge, defeating Brazil’s Anna Julia Sperling by penalty in overtime in the women’s under-63 kg final.

Earlier, the Albertan had ousted Kaiya Johnston of the USA and Katherine Galarza of Ecuador to claim her spot in the final.

“Maia’s first bout was probably her toughest, and she may have been feeling some stress, but her win set the tone for the rest of the day, and she never let up! Her confidence was high, and in the final, she managed to gain the upper hand over the Brazilian, who is an excellent athlete. Maia was definitely a contender for a medal today. She’s already gained some international competition experience in the past, and it showed,” said Canadian coach Alexandre Émond.

In the same weight division, Victoria Summers won a bronze medal by defeating Katherine Galarza in her final bout of the day.

Every single Canadian female who competed in Lima on Friday ended the day with a medal. Melody Grenier (-52 kg), Myroslava Bondarenko (-57 kg), and Charlie Thibault (-70 kg) clinched silver in their respective categories, while Addyson Tamura (-48 kg), Maegan Grouten (-52 kg), Missy Jen Dorval Mbele (-70 kg), and Emily Harris (+70 kg) secured bronze.

Among the males, Connor Gallant was the first to stand atop of the podium, after dispatching of Theodore Lehmen of the USA in the under-66 kg final. The Albertan had defeated Peru’s Jonas Guanipa and Argentina’s Thiago Carvallo earlier in the day.

“Connor did very well. He was feeling really good this morning, and in his second match, he managed to come back from behind by putting a lot of pressure on his opponent. He also managed his final bout very well. It was a great day. His performance was exemplary,” said Émond.

Tristan Bourque was quick to emulate his teammate. After defeating Alberto Zambra of Chile and Shota Kundukashvili of the USA, the Québécois edged out Australia’s Akos Kelly in overtime in the final.

“Tristan dominated the final, but his opponent did a good job of dodging him. When the match went into overtime, Tristan took advantage of his opponent’s fatigue to modify his strategy a bit, using infighting techniques to secure the win,” explained the Canadian coach.

Canadians Oleksandr Smakula and Franck David Moussima Ewane Elouti also advanced to the big finals in their respective categories on Friday. Smakula bowed out to Brazil’s Gabriel Cruz in the under-50 kg division, while Moussima Ewane Elouti (+90 kg) lost by yuko to Kanta Ueyama of the USA at the end of regulation time. Both will go home with silver medals.

Lowan Le Bris (-73 kg) and Matthew Molchanov (-90 kg) rounded out Canada’s medal haul with two bronze medals.

Also on Friday, Akhmed Loliev (-50 kg), Xavier Brouillette (-55 kg), and Amir Temirbaev (-60 kg) were defeated in their bronze medal matches. Roman Semyrozum (-55 kg) finished seventh.

The competition will continue on Saturday in Lima, where the junior athletes will compete for Pan-American titles.
