Canadian Women Steal the Show at Pan-American Cup in Florida

Montréal, October 29, 2026 – Just like the cadets yesterday, Canada’s junior judokas picked up a slew of medals on Thursday at the Pan-American Cup in Orlando, Florida. The Canadian team won a total of 15 medals, including nine in the women’s divisions.

In fact, three of the women’s finals featured two Canadian competitors. Rima Bourihane defeated Emma Tritton in the under-52 kg division, Valeria Kostrovets bested Mélody Grenier in the under-57 kg category, and Charlie Thibault prevailed over Missy Jen Dorval Mbele in the under-70 kg weight class.

After receiving a bye in the first round, Kostrovets defeated Georgia’s Diana Lolua in the quarter-finals, then moved on to the semi-finals, where she faced Hilary Lam of Peru. The Canadian earned her spot in the finals thanks to a yuko scored more than three minutes into overtime.

“Valeria did very well in the semi-finals, where she appeared to be in control throughout the bout. In the finals, Melody attempted a move that ended up completely trapping one of Valeria’s arms. It could have resulted in a serious injury. The referees penalized the move with a hansoku-make, which immediately brought the match to an end,” explained coach David Flecha Díez.

Hayden Thibeault ended the day on the third step of the under-57 kg podium thanks to her victory over Aubrey Genereux of the USA in the bronze medal final.

For Rima Bourihane and Charlie Thibault, their days began with the semi-final rounds, due to a limited number of participants in their respective weight categories. Bourihane quickly disposed of Chile’s Constanza San Martin before defeating Tritton in a hard-fought final.

“I know that Rima would have liked to compete in more bouts, but that’s all part of the sport. She displayed her superior skills throughout the match, both in her positioning and through her very effective attacks. She controlled the bout from start to finish,” noted the coach.

As for Thibault, she defeated Leni Welter of Luxembourg as the four minutes of regulation time wound down in the semi-finals, then bested Dorval Mbele with a submission hold.

“Charlie’s focus was key to her winning the gold medal. She won her first bout without too much trouble, but Missy Jen made things more difficult for her, particularly by using a high guard. But Charlie’s attacks were effective, and she succeeded in winning the bout with an elbow lock.”

Emiliya Aliyeva also nabbed a gold medal today by defeating Rose-Marie Le Corre of the USA, the only other competitor registered in the under-78 kg division. It was a similar story in the over-78 kg weight class, where Frédérique Lavigne lost to Rhadi Ferguson of the USA in the only bout scheduled in the category.

Anna Li (-48 kg), Miya Demaere (-48 kg), and Finley Morasch (-70 kg) all ended the day with records of two losses in as many matches.

Another title for Roman Semyrozun

Roman Semyrozun, who was crowned champion yesterday in the cadet tournament, added another gold medal to his collection on Thursday by prevailing in the under-66 kg division, this time at the junior age level. In his final bout of the day, the Canadian defeated Daniel Lima of the USA.

He had earlier prevailed over his compatriots Paxton Nelson and Samuel Morrison on his route to the semi-finals, where he ousted Alhussain Sughayyir of Saudi Arabia.

“The competition was very strong in the under-66 kg division today. Roman faced a tough opponent who fought aggressively all day long. Nevertheless, he was able to neutralize Lima’s attacks, block several of his attempts, and secure the victory after four gruelling minutes of combat,” said a delighted Flecha Díez.

In the same weight division, Éliandre Barriault-Tremblay captured one of the bronze medals, while Jacob Element finished fifth. Connor Gallant, Sébastien Fecteau, Kohen Johnson, and Alexandre Tremblay all posted records of one win and two losses.

Tristan Bourque (-81 kg) and Loic Beaton (-60 kg) were the other two Canadians who competed for gold on Thursday. The two judokas finished the day with silver medals, however, after being defeated in their respective final bouts. Xavier Brouillette (-60 kg) and Tomo Di Cesare (-90 kg) both collected bronze medals.

Jacob Riverin (-73 kg) and Noam Barriault-Tremblay (-81 kg) each lost their bronze medal matches.

Félix Léonard (-60 kg), Muhammad Turajev (-60 kg), Silas Coughlan (-60 kg), Blake Rempel (-60 kg), Patrick Berteau (-73 kg), Corsin Raess (-73 kg), Tymur Tolmachov (-73 kg), and Maxime Bourgoin (-73 kg) also competed in Orlando on Thursday, but did not rank.

The Pan-American Cup will continue on Saturday and Sunday in Florida with the senior tournaments.
